[Termes IGN] tsunamiRésumé : (Auteur) The disastrous tsunami of December 26, 2004, exposed the urgent need for implementing a tsunami warning system. One of the essential requirements of a tsunami warning system is the set up of tsunami inundation models which can predict inundation and run-up along a coastline for a given set of seismic parameters. The Tsunami Warning Centre and the State/District level Disaster Management Centres should have tsunami inundations maps for different scenarios of tsunami generation. In the event of a tsunamigenic earthquake, appropriate decisions on issue of warnings and/or evacuation of coastal population are made by referring to such maps. The nature of tsunami inundation and run-up along the Kerala coast for the 2004 Sumatra and 1945 Makran, and a hypothetical worst-case scenario are simulated using the TUNAMI N2 model and the results are presented in this paper. Further, scenarios of tsunami inundation arising out of possible rise in sea level as projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC 2001) are also simulated and analysed in the paper. For the study, three representative sectors of the Kerala coast including the Neendakara-Kayamkulam coast, which was the worst hit by the 2004 tsunami, are chosen. The results show that the southern locations and certain locations of central Kerala coast are more vulnerable for Sumatra when compared to Makran 1945 tsunami. From the results of numerical modelling for future scenarios it can be concluded that sea level rise can definitely make pronounced increase in inundation in some of the stretches where the backshore elevation is comparatively low. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) This study aims to correct for long-term vertical land motions at tide gauges (TG) by estimating high-accurate GPS vertical velocities at co-located stations (GPS@TG), useful for long-term sea-level change studies and satellite altimeter drift monitoring. Global Positioning System (GPS) data reanalyses are mandatory when aiming at the highest consistency of the estimated products for the whole data period. The University of La Rochelle Consortium (ULR) has carried out several GPS data reanalysis campaigns with an increasing tracking network, an improving processing strategy and the best methodology. The geodetic results from the latest GPS velocity field estimated at ULR (named ULR5) are presented here. The velocity field includes 326 globally distributed GPS stations, from which 200 are GPS@TG (30% more than previous studies). The new GPS data processing strategy, the terrestrial frame definition and the velocity estimation procedures are described. The quality of the estimated vertical velocities is empirically assessed through internal and external velocity comparisons, including the analysis of the time-correlated noise content of the position time series, to be better than 0.6 mm/yr (2 sigma). The application of this velocity field is illustrated to appraise to what extent vertical land motions contaminate the estimates of satellite altimetry drifts. The impact on the altimeter-derived sea level trends was evaluated to be up to 0.6 mm/yr. Worldwide TGs were grouped into regions in order to explore long-term spatial sea level variability in the rates of sea level change. By taking into account the vertical land motion of the tide gauges, the dispersion of the observed sea level rates within each region was reduced by 60%. Long-term regional mean sea level variations up to 70% from the global mean were found. [Termes IGN] niveau de la merRésumé : (auteur) The University of La Rochelle (ULR) TIGA Analysis Center (TAC) completed a new global reprocessed solution spanning 13 years with more than 300 GPS permanent stations, 216 of them being co-located with tide gauges. A state-of-the-art GPS processing strategy was applied, in particular, the station sub-networks used in the daily processing were optimally built. Station vertical velocities were estimated in the ITRF2005 reference frame by stacking the weekly position estimates. Outliers, offsets and discontinuities in time series were carefully examined. Vertical velocities uncertainties were assessed in a realistic way by analysing the type and amplitude of the noise content in the residual position time series. The comparison shows that the velocity uncertainties have been reduced by a factor of 2 with respect to previous ULR solutions. The analysis of this solution and its by-products shows the high geodetic quality achieved in terms of homogeneity, precision and consistency with respect to other top-level geodetic solutions. Note de contenu : Introduction

[Vedettes matières IGN] AltimétrieIndex. décimale : 30.52 Marégraphie et niveau moyen des mers Résumé : (Auteur) Sea-level rise is one of the most obvious manifestations of anthropogenic climate change, and it directly threatens coasts as a result of increased erosion, more frequent storm-surge flooding and loss of habitat. However, the wide range of uncertainty in projections of global and regional sea-level rise presented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is a significant hindrance in agreeing to appropriate mitigation levels and in planning adaptation measures. A workshop in June 2006, organized under the auspices of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) to address this issue, led to publication of this book. Understanding Sea-Level Rise and Variability identifies the major impacts of sea-level rise, presents up-to-date assessments of past sea-level change, thoroughly explores all of the factors contributing to sea-level rise, and explores how sea-level extreme events might change. It identifies what is known in each area and what research and observations are required to reduce the uncertainties in our understanding of sea-level rise so that more reliable future projections can be made. A synthesis of findings provides a concise summary of sea-level rise and its impacts on society. The book is for everyone interested in sea-level rise and its impacts, including policy makers, research funders, scientists, students, coastal managers and engineers. Note de contenu : Foreword
