[Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) This paper introduces a multi-scale theory of piecewise image modelling, called the scale-sets theory, and which can be regarded as a region-oriented scale-space theory. The first part of the paper studies the general structure of a geometrically unbiased region-oriented multi-scale image description and introduces the scale-sets representation, a representation which allows to handle such a description exactly. The second part of the paper deals with the way scale-sets image analyses can be built according to an energy minimization principle. We consider a rather general formulation of the partitioning problem which involves minimizing a two-term-based energy, of the form λC + D, where D is a goodness-of-fit term and C is a regularization term. We describe the way such energies arise from basic principles of approximate modelling and we relate them to operational rate/distorsion problems involved in lossy compression problems. We then show that an important subset of these energies constitutes a class of multi-scale energies in that the minimal cut of a hierarchy gets coarser and coarser as parameter λ increases. This allows us to devise a fast dynamic-programming procedure to find the complete scale-sets representation of this family of minimal cuts. Considering then the construction of the hierarchy from which the minimal cuts are extracted, we end up with an exact and parameter-free algorithm to build scale-sets image descriptions whose sections constitute a monotone sequence of upward global minima of a multi-scale energy, which is called the “scale climbing” algorithm. This algorithm can be viewed as a continuation method along the scale dimension or as a minimum pursuit along the operational rate/distorsion curve. Furthermore, the solution verifies a linear scale invariance property which allows to completely postpone the tuning of the scale parameter to a subsequent stage. For computational reasons, the scale climbing algorithm is approximated by a pair-wise region merging scheme: however the principal properties of the solutions are kept. Some results obtained with Mumford-Shah’s piece-wise constant model and a variant are provided and different applications of the proposed multi-scale analyses are finally sketched. [Termes IGN] signature spectraleRésumé : (Auteur) Fusion of hyperspectral data is proposed by means of partitioning the hyperspectral bands into subgroups, prior to principal components transformation (PCT). The first principal component of each subgroup is employed for image visualization. The proposed approach is general, with the number of bands in each subgroup being application dependent. Nevertheless, the paper focuses on partitions with three subgroups suitable for RGB representation. One of them employs matched-filtering based on the spectral characteristics of various materials and is very promising for classification purposes. The information content of the hyperspectral bands as well as the quality of the obtained RGB images are quantitatively assessed using measures such as the correlation coefficient, the entropy, and the maximum energy-minimum correlation index. The classification performance of the proposed partitioning approaches is tested using the K-means algorithm. [Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageIndex. décimale : 35.20 Traitement d'image Résumé : (Auteur) The availability of highly capable three-dimensional sensor systems creates the need for adequate systems for automated processing of three-dimensional data. Contrary to conventional intensity-images, which contain information on the intensity of an objects surface, range images store the distance of each point on a surface to the sensor. In order to process these data on a high level of abstraction, new concepts need to be developed, exceeding two-dimensional image analysis. In the context of developing automated three-dimensional computer vision systems, this thesis brings two aspects into focus: partitioning the image data and establishing a correspondence in-between image- and model-data.
This work aims at developing a model-based system for the segmentation and object recognition of three-dimensional objects with curved surfaces using range images. The model data is represented using a CAD-model, providing a mathematical precise and reliable description of arbitrary shapes.
Within this thesis a newly developed method for model-based range image segmentation is presented, using curvature as invariant features. By integrating model information into the segmentation stage, the segmentation process is guided to provide a partitioning corresponding to that of the CAD-model.
The features extracted during segmentation stage are brought into correspondence with the features of the model using a tree-search strategy. The number of possible pairings is reduced due to the fact that model information has been utilized during segmentation. After successful pairing, the three-dimensional transformation of the model onto the object in the scene is computed, completing the object recognition process.
This work provides a way to compute the segmentation of objects in range images containing curved surfaces, detect objects in arbitrary positions and derive the transformation onto a CAD-model. Thereby it contributes to the development of automated systems in the areas of inspection, manufacturing and robotics.

[Termes IGN] segmentation d'imageRésumé : (auteur) This paper deals with the problem of comparison of image segmentations. It proposes a graph-based modelling of the relations between the regions of two segmentations, which allows to handle arbitrarily complex matchings between groups of regions. This approach is motivated by the need of accurate models to describe the differences between segmentations of multi-temporal aerial image of a same scene. We introduce the family of Nesting Relations between two partitions of a same set and show that it gives a hierarchical notion of complexity for the rearrangements of groups of regions. The computation of matchings according to our definition requires to find an optimal partitioning of a graph into diametrally bounded connected components. We provide a fast algorithm for the particular case of a tree and show how it can be used in the general case. Finally, an example of application to the fusion of multi-date image segmentations is presented.
