[Termes IGN] site historiqueRésumé : (auteur) Accurate extraction of urban landscape features in the historic district of China is an essential task for the protection of the cultural and historical heritage. In recent years, deep learning (DL)-based methods have made substantial progress in landscape feature extraction. However, the lack of annotated data and the complex scenarios inside alleyways result in the limited performance of the available DL-based methods when extracting landscape features. To deal with this problem, we built a small yet comprehensive history-core street view (HCSV) dataset and propose a polarized attention-based landscape feature segmentation network (PALESNet) in this article. The polarized self-attention block is employed in PALESNet to discriminate each landscape feature in various situations, whereas the atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) block is utilized to capture the multi-scale features. As an auxiliary, a transfer learning module was introduced to supplement the knowledge of the network, to overcome the shortage of labeled data and improve its learning capability in the historic districts. Compared to other state-of-the-art methods, our network achieved the highest accuracy in the case study of Beijing Core Area, with an mIoU of 63.7% on the HCSV dataset; and thus could provide sufficient and accurate data for further protection and renewal in Chinese historic districts. We introduce procedural placement models (PPMs) for vegetation in urban layouts. PPMs are environmentally sensitive to city geometry and allow identifying plausible plant positions based on structural and functional zones in an urban layout. PPMs can either be directly used by defining their parameters or learned from satellite images and land register data. This allows us to populate urban landscapes with complex 3D vegetation and enhance existing approaches for generating urban landscapes. Our framework’s effectiveness is shown through examples of large-scale city scenes and close-ups of individually grown tree models. We validate the results generated with our framework with a perceptual user study and its usability based on urban scene design sessions with expert users. [Termes IGN] visionRésumé : (auteur) We propose a method for analysing landmark visibility from a pedestrian’s perspective. A case study is performed in Kraków, a city with many architectural monuments, where airborne LiDAR is used to model both buildings and urban greenery. The proposed method involves preliminary and detailed stages. The preliminary stage entails an inverse analysis (I–Vis) that departs from the typical visibility analysis to enable the use of landmarks as observers instead of targets. I–Vis results in paths with high landmark visibility. The detailed stage involves the use of a virtual panorama (V-Pan) to determine the visual exposure of the landmarks. Landmarks considered visible by I–Vis are generally consistent with landmarks identified by V-Pan. Discrepancies occur when trees appear in the near field-of-view. In addition, the accuracy of the skyline length and visible landmark surface area is evaluated against ground observations. The obtained results show that V-Pan can evaluate landmark visibility with an accuracy of approximately 75%. The key contributions of the work to visibility analysis of urban landmarks are in the inverse viewshed strategy and evaluation of the visual exposure parameters on LiDAR virtual panoramas. [Termes IGN] Wuhan (Chine)Résumé : (auteur) As a powerful predictive technique based on machine learning, the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model has been widely used in geographic modeling. However, its performance in calibrating cellular automata (CA) for urban growth simulation has not been investigated. This study compares the MaxEnt model with logistic regression (LR), artificial neural network (ANN), and support vector machine (SVM) models to explore its advantages in simulating urban growth and interpreting driving mechanisms. With the land use data of 2000 and 2020 from GlobeLand30, the constructed LR-CA, ANN-CA, SVM-CA, and MaxEnt-CA models are applied to simulate the urban growth of Beijing, Tianjin, and Wuhan, respectively. Their performance has been evaluated from multiple aspects such as the accuracy of training, testing, and projecting, computational efficiency, simulation accuracy, and simulated urban landscape. The results indicate that the MaxEnt model is superior to the other models except for the computational efficiency, but the time required for the MaxEnt training and projecting is acceptable and far less than that of the SVM. Taking the LR-CA as the benchmark, the kappa coefficients (Kappa) of the MaxEnt-CA have been increased by 4.20%, 3.38%, and 5.87% in Beijing, Tianjin, and Wuhan, respectively; the increments of corresponding figure of merits (FoM) are 6.26%, 4.58%, and 8.49%. The driving mechanisms of urban growth such as the interactions, response curves, and importance of spatial variables, have also been revealed by the MaxEnt modeling. The driving mechanisms of urban growth in Tianjin are more complex than that in Beijing and Wuhan, because there are more variable interactions; the relationships between spatial factors and urban growth in the three study areas are all nonlinear; the topographic factors and city center of Beijing, the traffic factors and water bodies of Tianjin, and the traffic factors, city center and water bodies of Wuhan are significant factors affecting their urban growth. The reconstruction was made on the basis of historical maps and plans from the end of the eighteenth century, as well as contemporary cartographic materials and digital terrain models (DTM). Analysis of the sources showed that the main period of anthropogenic degradation of dunes in the city was the second half of the twentieth century. The balance of changes in the share of dunes within city limits is estimated to be a decrease of about 26.5% over the study period, and by around 60.2% in the part that is presently urbanised.
