[Termes IGN] vent solaireRésumé : (Editeur) Although the sun can become disturbed at any time, solar activity is correlated with the approximately 11-year cycle of spots on the sun's surface. We are just coming out of a minimum in the solar cycle and headed for the next maximum, predicted to occur around the middle of 2013. How significantly will GNSS users be affected? In this month's column, two ionosphere experts tell us what might be in store. [Termes IGN] tomographieRésumé : (Auteur) The impacts of the August 21, 2003 geomagnetic storm on the ionosphere over China have been first investigated by using the so-called computerized ionospheric tomography (CIT) technique and the observations of the Crustal Movement Observation Network of China. Tomographic results show that the main ionospheric effects of this geomagnetic storm over China are as follows: (1) the negative storm phase effect appears in the F region and (2) the positive storm phase effect occurs above the F region. Meanwhile, some key features in the ionospheric structure have been revealed in the ionospheric images during the storm; this includes the disturbances and an elongated region of the reduced electron density at the latitude around 32°N. Statistical comparisons are carried out to confirm the reliability of the global-navigation-satellite-system-based CIT reconstruction results using the profile obtained from ionosonde observations. [Termes IGN] Setchouan (Chine)Résumé : (Auteur) Analysis of the low frequency fluctuations of the magnetic and electric fields prior to a strong earthquake of magnitude 8.0 on 12 May 2008 in Sichuan Province is given. We analyse the disturbances of the ionospheric electromagnetic field prior to the earthquake starting 2 weeks before this event, but detailed analysis is given for 6 and 9 May, 6 and 3 days prior to the earthquake, when the observed effects were strongest. Special attention is given to the characteristics of the spectra of these variations and the search for nonlinear effects. This analysis is possible in the time intervals when the extra low frequency (ELF) waveform was transmitted. Although the mechanism of energy transmission from the earthquake preparation zone to the ionosphere is not determined, it can be said that the ionospheric plasma is an unstable medium and that even a small perturbation can lead to variations in the electromagnetic field and plasma parameters. Some attempts at this discussion are given in the paper. The observations by Detection of Electro-Magnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions (DEMETER) and discussed in this paper suggest the presence of plasma turbulence over the area above the Wenchuan Earthquake on 12 May 2008. The characteristics of the observed disturbances are studied with wavelet and bispectral analysis, tools which are more relevant for analysing plasma turbulence. [Termes IGN] tempête magnétiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The approaching solar maximum will produce magnetic storms, ionospheric storms, and disruptions to radio signals that directly affect the world’s technical infrastructure, including GNSS. The authors propose a method for evaluating the ability of GPS receivers to operate through scintillation before the next solar maximum arrives in 2013. [Termes IGN] transformation en ondelettesRésumé : (Auteur) The ionospheric effect is one of the major errors in GPS data processing over long baselines. As a dispersive medium, it is possible to compute its influence on the GPS signal with the ionosphere-free linear combination of L1 and L2 observables, requiring dual-frequency receivers. In the case of single-frequency receivers, ionospheric effects are either neglected or reduced by using a model. In this paper, an alternative for single-frequency users is proposed. It involves multiresolution analysis (MRA) using a wavelet analysis of the double-difference observations to remove the short- and medium-scale ionosphere variations and disturbances, as well as some minor tropospheric effects. Experiments were carried out over three baseline lengths from 50 to 450 km, and the results provided by the proposed method were better than those from dual-frequency receivers. The horizontal root mean square was of about 0.28 m (1ó).
