[Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) Morphological changes on Sagar Island are occurring at an alarming rate due to both natural and anthropogenic activities. The eastern part of the island is rapidly eroding due to destabilization and growth of tidal flats in the Muriganga estuary and the gradual shifting of water current towards the island. Over the last four years (1996–1999), the rate of coastal erosion has been much higher (11.35 km2) than accretion (2.65 km2), compared with the conditions prior to 1996. Coastal places like Dublat, Basantpur, Gobindapur, Collectorganj, and Sumatinagar have become the critical zones of erosion. The shorelines along the eastern and south-western sides are receding. The extent of coverage of the paddy field, sandy beaches, and land vegetation has decreased from 1996 to 1999 by 15.7, 1.1, and 3.5 km2, respectively. An integrated database of the island was generated using spatial and non-spatial data collected through field survey, satellite images of IRS-1C LISS III, and topomaps. Spatial data include coastal geomorphological landforms, land-use and land cover, shoreline change, sandy beaches, coastal erosion sites, agricultural fields, aquaculture sites, and coastal riparian vegetations. Non-spatial data include the demography and evolution of the island. The main critical environmental issues of the island are: (1) degradation of mangrove forests and coastal erosion; (2) overpopulation and over-exploitation of living resources; and (3) destruction of seawalls. Further degradation may lead to extinction of a variety of species and scarcity of marine food unless properly managed and regulated. [Termes IGN] TurquieRésumé : (Auteur) The pressure of population and its demands for fuel, for heating or industrial usage, causes destruction of the natural environment. One of the clearest examples for the accelerated degradation of changes in the forest area and coastline is in the Kilyos–Karaburun coastline located in the northern part of Istanbul metropolitan city. The open-pit mining activities in the region are threatening the balances of both sea and land ecosystems, and cause degradation of forest areas and changes along the coastline. In this paper, the changes are examined with multisensor satellite data such as Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), SPOT Panchromatic (P), and RADARSAT images by using different image-processing techniques. The degrees of changes in coastline length and coastal region area were calculated, and the effectiveness of the use of different image data sets was outlined for coastal environments. [Termes IGN] SuisseRésumé : (auteur) Considerable efforts have recently resulted in the development of global land cover data at large spatial scales. The main objective of this study is a comparison of different AVHRR- and MODIS-based forest and land cover products at the scale of the European Alps: a large natural ecosystem that is exposed to both natural environmental threats and human impacts and exploitation. In a first test, the accuracy of land cover products in predicting the overall amount of forest across national boundaries was assessed using national forest inventory statistics. Both variants of forest class combinations resulted in a general overestimation of the forest area. The IGBP 2.0 cover performed best with an overall mean absolute error of 13% and a bias of 0%. In a second test, large-area land cover products were tested for accuracy in predicting 13 aggregated land cover types in a spatially explicit manner using CORINE land cover as reference dataset. Due to data inconsistencies, partly insufficient spatial resolution, steep terrain and land use heterogeneity of the European Alps, only partly satisfactory results were obtained. [Termes IGN] Viet NamRésumé : (Auteur) Large concentrations of herbicide were sprayed onto the forests of southern Vietnam in the 1960s and early 1970s. Over 30 years later, many of these contaminated forests have regained full canopy cover, albeit with reduced chlorophyll content. The European Space Agency produces an operational product for the estimation of terrestrial chlorophyll content over large areas of terrain. This product uses data recorded by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on Envisat and is called the MERIS Terrestrial Chlorophyll Index (MTCI). The relationship between historical levels of herbicide contamination and contemporary MTCI was strong (R = 0.86) and negative, with high levels of herbicide contamination being associated (via low levels of chlorophyll concentration) with low levels of MTCI. This is the first published study to demonstrate a relationship between MTCI and a surrogate for chlorophyll content. The next stage of this research is to build on the strength of this relationship and use contemporary MTCI to estimate historical herbicide levels during the 1960s and 1970s across southern Vietnam.
