[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Climate is considered to be the main factor that determines forest species distribution. In Europe, climatic series show a global warming trend and an increase in frequency of summer droughts, which should affect growth and regeneration of tree populations. Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is particularly sensitive to drought and high temperatures. Then, this species reaches the rear edge of its lowland European distribution in the south-west of France. In this area, statistical modelling of future distributions based on climate scenarios show a significant potential reduction for F. sylvatica’s range. At the moment, failure of beech establishment is still unknown at the regional scale in the rear edge of its distribution range. The aim of this study was thus to determine if a reduction in natural regeneration of beechwoods could be related to the decrease in the species presence at its range margin. We identified ecological factors related to beech recruitment by estimating seedling density on the forest floor respectively in 71 and 85 beech plots in the south-west lowlands of France. We also determined if a relation between seedling amount and mast-seeding existed. We showed the importance of local factors in the natural regeneration stages by performing a multivariate reduction of the data and a multiple regression on densities. The inherent capacity of the stand to produce fruits explained a greater part of cupule density variance than did the climatic factor. However, we observed that meso-, micro- and pedo-climates were the main factors controlling seedling amount. Higher soil moisture, precipitation and temperature during the growing season increased seedling density, while late spring and early autumn frosts decreased it. Soil and stand conditions also played a significant role. Fruit production increased in stands that showed tree crown degradation, while seedling amount decreased in this case. The increase in allocation to reproduction could be a strategy of beech to cope with ecological constraints that tend to limit its establishment. Thus, seedling establishment is related to the factors controlling F. sylvatica presence at its southern distribution margins. This illustrates how natural regeneration is a key stage for beech success where the future of the species is jeopardized in the context of climate change. [Termes IGN] regroupement de donnéesRésumé : (auteur) Nearest neighbors techniques have been shown to be useful for estimating forest attributes, particularly when used with forest inventory and satellite image data. Published reports of positive results have been truly international in scope. However, for these techniques to be more useful, they must be able to contribute to scientific inference which, for sample-based methods, requires estimates of uncertainty in the form of variances or standard errors. Several parametric approaches to estimating uncertainty for nearest neighbors techniques have been proposed, but they are complex and computationally intensive. For this study, two resampling estimators, the bootstrap and the jackknife, were investigated and compared to a parametric estimator for estimating uncertainty using the k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN) technique with forest inventory and Landsat data from Finland, Italy, and the USA. The technical objectives of the study were threefold: (1) to evaluate the assumptions underlying a parametric approach to estimating k-NN variances; (2) to assess the utility of the bootstrap and jackknife methods with respect to the quality of variance estimates, ease of implementation, and computational intensity; and (3) to investigate adaptation of resampling methods to accommodate cluster sampling. The general conclusions were that support was provided for the assumptions underlying the parametric approach, the parametric and resampling estimators produced comparable variance estimates, care must be taken to ensure that bootstrap resampling mimics the original sampling, and the bootstrap procedure is a viable approach to variance estimation for nearest neighbor techniques that use very small numbers of neighbors to calculate predictions. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) In order to better understand the structure and composition of forest plant communities, we aimed to predict the abundance of understory herbaceous species locally at the stand level and according to different environments. For this, we seeked to model species distributions of abundance at a regional scale in relationship with the local stand structure (canopy openness) and regional soil resources (soil pH). Floristic inventories, performed in different light and soil conditions located in 1202 records of north eastern France, were used to analyze the combined effect of canopy openness and soil pH on the abundance of 12 common western European forest species: Anemone nemorosa, Deschampsia flexuosa, Festuca altissima, Hedera helix, Lamium galeobdolon, Lonicera periclymenum, Molinia caerulea, Oxalis acetosella, Pteridium aquilinum, Rubus fruticosus, Rubus idaeus, and Vaccinium myrtillus. Ordinal regression models relating species abundance responses to their environment were developed.
For most species (eight out of 12), distribution was significantly affected by canopy openness and soil pH. Differences among low-abundance (i.e. cover 25%) responses were noted for 11 species along the canopy openness gradient and four species along the pH gradient. The present study quantifies optimal light and soil nutrient requirements for high-abundance responses and quantifies light and soil nutrients tolerance conditions for low-abundance responses. The combination of both factors highlights the pre-eminence of pH conditions occurrence and canopy openness for species abundance. The models developed by this study may be used to define canopy openness thresholds in function of soil characteristics to control the development of species during forest regeneration. The species-specific reactions on local canopy openness along a regional soil gradient illustrate the need for a species-specific management approach.
