[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Climate change mitigation and energy transition are becoming priorities on many political agenda across the world, and especially in Europe. Forests, through their capacity to sequester carbon and produce renewable materials, are key assets to reach these environmental goals. European forests are encountered across wide biogeographic gradients and have recently shown contrasted productivity responses to climate change. Maximizing the climate benefits of European forests requires to precisely track forest productivity trajectories across regions in a continuously changing growing environment. National Forest Inventories (NFIs) perform systematic forest surveys across space and time and are powerful tools to monitor forest productivity dynamics and climate controls upon forest productivity at wide geographical scales. Building upon the ongoing pan-European harmonization of NFI data and information, we developed an original and promising modeling framework to extract large-scale climate-driven productivity dynamics and confront them to silvicultural and environmental attributes. With its simple and versatile design, it can be easily applied to diverse NFI schemes (annual vs. periodic field campaigns, permanent vs. temporary plots, radial increment vs. diameter measurements). To illustrate its promising potential to monitoring forest productivity dynamics, we consecutively applied it to study pure and even-aged conifer forests (1) in France over the 2006-2016 and (2) in France and Austria over the 1996-2016 period. Results highlighted in both cases a strong control of water resources on recent productivity trends, particularly in plains where fast-growing conifers species have been massively introduced during the XXe century and where sequestration dynamics have been the least favorable. Greater forest structural complexity was also identified as a driver of greater forest resilience to climate change. These results are of major concerns when conifer plantations have been largely encouraged these last decades, notably through state financial programs. Harmonized NFI data at the transnational level provide reliable information to i) survey carbon sequestration dynamics of different regional forest sinks; (ii) alert on the weakening of these sinks, (iii) implement large-scale climate-smart forest management; and (iv) adapt carbon sequestration strategies (ex. tree species substitution). The application of the present framework to other NFIs in Europe would support an integrative and continental monitoring of forest resources, in line with current EU strategies. [Termes IGN] patrimoine naturelRésumé : (auteur) National Forest Inventories (NFIs) play an important role in understanding the state of forests at the national and regional levels. Forest inventory for small territorial areas, such as municipalities, is also important for decision-makers. However, information is relatively limited at this level. As a result, developing small area estimation (SAE) approaches has gained increasing popularity in the field of forest inventory. It enables prediction of forest attributes for sub-populations using regression models based on auxiliary data commonly derived from remote sensing techniques over an area of interest (AOI). It has been reported that SAE can improve the precision of forest inventory without increasing costs (Mandallaz, Breschan and Hill 2013) and may produce reliable predictions of forest attributes locally, even when field plots are not available (Rao 2014). Tomppo (2006) is a pioneer in the use of auxiliary data for multisource forest inventory. Previously, common sources of auxiliary data often came from satellite-based imagery (McRoberts et al. 2007), digital aerial photogrammetry (Breidenbach et al. 2018), and airborne laser scanning (Magnussen et al. 2014). NASA’s newly-launched Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) is a full waveform LiDAR instrument aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Its products consist of footprint measurements projected to cover 4% of the global land surface by the end of its mission (Dubayah et al. 2020). This will provide an unprecedented opportunity to systematically collect samples of forest information that can be used in SAE on a large scale. The objective of this study is to explore the possibility of using GEDI auxiliary data to improve the accuracy of forest inventory for a large natural area in central France (Sologne), as well as for smaller sub-areas defined by French administrative boundaries (departments). The results will then be compared against estimates obtained from simple random sampling (SRS), to assess the efficiency of the auxiliary data. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Contexte.
Conclusion.

[Termes IGN] volume en boisRésumé : (auteur) Photogrammetric point clouds obtained with unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have emerged as an alternative source of remotely sensed data for small area forest management inventories (FMI). Nonetheless, it is often overlooked that small area FMI require considerable field data in addition to UAS data, to support the modelling of forest attributes. In this study, we propose a method whereby tree volumes by species are predicted with photogrammetric UAS data and Sentinel-2 images, using models fitted with airborne laser scanning data. The study area is in a managed boreal forest area in Eastern Finland. First, we predicted total volume with UAS point cloud metrics using a prior regression model fitted in another area with ALS data. Tree species proportions were then predicted by k nearest neighbor (k-NN) imputation based on bi-seasonal Sentinel-2 images without measuring new field plot data. Species-specific volumes were then obtained by multiplying the total volume by species proportions. The relative root mean square error (RMSE) values for total and species-specific volume predictions at the validation plot level (30 m × 30 m) were 9.0%, and 33.4–62.6%, respectively. Our approach appears promising for species-specific small area FMI in Finland and in comparable forest conditions in which suitable field plots are available.
