[Vedettes matières IGN] Economie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Key message : A set of models of bark thickness at breast height and bark volume are now available for six species in France. A common model suitable for predicting bark volume was proposed for all species. A small but significant altitude effect on bark thickness at breast height was detected for three species.
Context : The growing demand for wood energy and bio-molecules requires a thorough evaluation of forest biomass, particularly bark.
Aims : The objective of this study is to have statistical models of bark volumes for the six main forest species present in North-Eastern France and to be able to estimate regional bark biomasses and quantities of chemical extractives at regional scale.
Methods : A large databank gathering bark thickness measured at different heights in France was used for selecting literature or new alternative models of tree bark volume. These models were applied to the available forest inventory data from North-Eastern France to estimate the regional bark volume. Secondly, by multiplying these volumes by basic density data and extractive content recently obtained, bark biomasses and extractives quantities were deduced.
Results : The first results consist in a set of species-specific models of bark thickness at breast height with R2 around 0.70 and a relative RMSE around 30% which is an improvement of 0.1 for R2 and of 1–2% for relative RMSE depending on the species compared to the best models from the literature. The second results consist in a set of species-specific models of tree bark volumes with R2 of 0.90 and a relative RMSE which varies between 22% when bark thickness at breast height is included and 40% when it is predicted. A significant relationship between bark thickness at breast height and altitude was also observed. The bark resources of Grand Est and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté regions were estimated at 558 000 m3/year and 611 000 m3/year respectively representing between 5.5% and 15% of the stem volume depending on the species. The propagation of the measurement error of bark gauge was estimated at 5% for model of bark thickness at breast height and 24% for bark volume model.
Conclusion : These results constitute an important contribution for a better knowledge of the bark resource at a regional scale and may help to optimise bark valuation by the forest-wood sector.Numéro de notice : A2021-909 Affiliation des auteurs : IGN+Ext (2020- ) Thématique : FORET/MATHEMATIQUE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-021-01096-7 Date de publication en ligne : 02/01/2022 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-021-01096-7 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=99458

[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) There is a well-documented opportunity and need to incorporate biodiversity conservation priorities into REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) initiatives. This requires thorough monitoring of changes to biodiversity at appropriate temporal and spatial scales. A national forest inventory is one of the essential tools used to monitor carbon stock changes but can also be expanded to include biodiversity indicators. Here we analyse the progress and potential of 70 countries in monitoring primarily non-tree biodiversity using national forest inventories. Progress on national forest inventories among countries participating in REDD+ is variable: 11 countries have not started; 26 have started but do not include non-tree biodiversity indicators; the remaining 33 countries do include non-tree biodiversity indicators but use various methodological approaches, levels of detail and taxonomic groups. Very few of these provide comprehensive and accessible manuals or results, highlighting a need for greater transparency. The capacity of countries to fund ongoing national forest inventories is a constraining factor. Remote sensing technologies can help reduce costs for countries with limited monitoring capacity but the need to understand biodiversity variation at finer scales often limits the utility of such methods. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) This study aimed at estimating total forest above-ground net change (ΔAGB; Gg) over five years (2014–2019) based on model-assisted estimation utilizing freely available satellite imagery. The study was conducted for a boreal forest area (approx. 1.4 Mha) in Norway where bi-temporal national forest inventory (NFI), Sentinel-2, and Landsat data were available. Biomass change was modelled based on a direct approach. The precision of estimates using only the NFI data in a basic expansion estimator was compared to four different alternative model-assisted estimates using 1) Sentinel-2 or Landsat data, and 2) using bi- or uni-temporal remotely sensed data. We found that spaceborne optical data improved the precision of the purely field-based estimates by a factor of up to three. The most precise estimates were found for the model-assisted estimation using bi-temporal Sentinel-2 (standard error; SE = 1.7 Gg). However, the decrease in precision when using Landsat data was small (SE = 1.92 Gg). We also found that ΔAGB could be precisely estimated when remotely sensed data were available only at the end of the monitoring period. We conclude that satellite optical data can considerably improve ΔAGB estimates, when repeated and coincident field data are available. The free availability, global coverage, frequent update, and long-term time horizon make data from programs such as Sentinel-2 and Landsat a valuable data source for consistent and durable monitoring of forest carbon dynamics. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Information on carbon stocks and the rate of carbon accumulation is needed to harness the climate change mitigation potential of boreal forests. While previous studies have revealed general patterns and mechanisms for age-dependence of stand biomass, simple stand-level models that address the age-biomass relationship on average in managed boreal forests in different environmental conditions are largely missing. We developed models for the relationship between stand age and biomass by forest types on peatlands and mineral soils across climate zones in managed forests in Finland based on National Forest Inventory measurements from 1996 to 2018. In addition, we analyzed at which rate biomass accumulates when managed forest ages in different growth conditions. In northern Finland the maximum biomass change rate was one third, and the maximum biomass stock less than half of the corresponding values in sub-xeric heath forests on minerals soils in southern Finland. On drained peatlands the maximum biomass growth rate was approximately half, and on undrained peatlands one third of the maximum growth rate on mineral soils. On most fertile sites on mineral soils the maximum biomasses were three times larger than on the poorest sites. Correspondingly, the maximum biomass stock change rates were almost eight times faster on most fertile sites. In the example cases presented, the highest annual biomass change rates were achieved in young forests on average at the stand ages of 7–32 years, whereas the 95% of the maximum stock were reached on average in stands of 63–147 years. At the age of highest biomass growth rate stands contained 27–59% of the maximum biomass stocks. The developed models can be used in practical applications such as accounting of biogenic carbon in life-cycle assessments, mapping carbon, or creating simple predictions of biomass stock development in regions, or estimating the mitigation potential of afforestation and reforestation or estimating the magnitude of carbon offsets projects. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) This work aims to analyze the potential of the Photogrammetric Point Cloud (PPC) obtained from Remote Piloted Aircraft (RPA) optical images for detecting and obtaining tree heights in a loblolly pine plantation using a global maximum filter. The enhanced algorithm used in this study is then named STD (Single Tree Detection). Field surveys were conducted to count all the trees in the field (Forest Census) and measure the trees’ height with a vertex hypsometer. The results were faced to PCC outcomes. The detection rate (r) was equal to the precision rate (p), indicating that the algorithm reaches a high tree detection performance. In summary, the STD algorithm segmented 2,192 trees, representing 89% of trees recorded in the forest census. The retrieved tree height reached, on average, a height of 17.05 m, whereas slightly higher by the traditional forest inventory (17.42 m). The root-mean-square error (RMSE) and Bias were 47 cm (2.8%) and -37 cm (-2.2%), respectively. The Dunnett test showed that the tree height did not significantly differ between the results obtained by traditional forest inventory from those generated by the STD. It confirms the potential use of PPC for forest inventory procedures.
