It is known that surface tilted in azimuth direction and buildings not aligned in the along-track direction induce polarization orientation shifts. Earlier research has established orientation angle as a function of radar imaging geometry and surface slopes, and that POA estimation can be derived from polarimetric radar data using circular polarization. Besides these, polarimetric scattering from steep slopes and its relation to POA remain not well understood. In this paper, we address these issues by adopting a tilted surface model based on Bragg scattering. We have found that, as the azimuthal slope increases, |VV| decreases at a faster rate than |HH|, they become equal, when POA is ±45°, and |HH| > |VV| afterward. In other words, the Pauli component, |HH-VV| reduced to zero at POA = ± 45°, and the typical Bragg scattering characteristics of |VV| > |HH| does not apply when steep slope is present inducing |POA| > 45°. Furthermore, the cross-pol |HV| does not always increase with azimuth slope but also reaches a maximum then decreases to zero. In addition, we investigate the effect of soil moisture on polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) scattering characteristics of steep terrain and the effect of vegetation over surface on POA estimation. The latter is demonstrated with NASA/JPL TOPSAR L-band PolSAR data and C-band InSAR data. Another significance of this paper is that it provides a direct and rigorous derivation of POA equations. The earlier version was derived from a different concept. [Termes descripteurs IGN] polarisation croiséeRésumé : (auteur) A qualitative relationship between the statistical behavior of cross-polarized phase difference ϕhvvh and dominant noise type is examined based on the polarimetric noise model proposed. The noise model focusing on the covariance matrix is able to separate the multiplicative noise which only affects the amplitude from the additive noise that alters both the amplitude and phase. In the case of low noise, the phase is not affected by the noise and ϕhvvh distribution is predicted to be centered at 0 deg in terms of reciprocity theorem. The case of strong noise is much more complicated as the dominant noise type plays an important role in the statistics of ϕhvvh. The phase over the area where multiplicative noise dominates is not altered, thus the ϕhvvh distribution is expected to have similar behaviors to the case of low noise. However, the dominant additive noise would significantly affect the phase so that an obvious deviation from 0 deg for ϕhvvh distribution is expected. Experiments with Radarsat-2 full polarimetric imageries further validate this qualitative relationship. [Termes descripteurs IGN] texture d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) Recent synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors with a capability of providing data with varying spatial resolutions, polarizations, and incidence angles have attracted greater interest for forest biomass and carbon storage estimation. This study investigates the capability of RADARSAT-2 fine-beam dual-polarization (C-HV and C-HH) data for forest biomass estimation in complex subtropical forest, with different types of processing: 1) raw intensity data (both polarizations separately and as polarization ratio) and 2) texture parameters of both polarizations (separately, jointly, and as polarization ratio). Field data (diameter at breast height and height) were collected from 53 field plots and converted to biomass (dry weight) using a newly developed allometric model. Finally, biomass estimation models were developed between SAR signatures from different processing steps and field plot biomass using stepwise multiple regression. All biomass estimation models using radar intensity data (C-HV, C-HH, and ratio of C-HV and C-HH) proved ineffective, but texture parameters derived from intensity data showed potential. We were able to estimate forest biomass amounts up to 360 t/ha with a goodness of fit of 0.78 (adjusted r2) and an rmse of 28.68 t/ha using the combination of texture parameters of both polarizations (C-HV and C-HH). However, goodness of fit could be improved to 0.91 (adjusted r2) and an rmse of 26.95 t/ha for biomass levels up to 532 t/ha using the ratio of texture parameters of C-HV/C-HH. The result is very encouraging and indicates that the dual-polarization C-band SAR sensor has a potential for the estimation of forest biomass, particularly using the polarization ratio of texture measurements, and biomass estimation can be improved substantially beyond the previously stated saturation level for C-band SAR. [Termes descripteurs IGN] Radar pénétrant GPRRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents some experimental results obtained with newly developed stepped-frequency continuous wave (SFCW) ground-penetrating radar in a frequency range from 400 to 4845 MHz. This paper describes the procedures to remove the delays within the transmitter, the receiver, and the antenna system and analyzes the experimental results obtained after processing the measured data. The measured system footprint and the experimental results show that using an ultrawideband (UWB) Archimedean spiral antenna decreases the coupling signal but does not provide the needed cross-range resolution. Based on the measured dimensions of the footprint, a synthetic aperture procedure is used to improve the radar cross-range resolution from around 60 cm to about 6 cm. This paper shows the ability of the radar to detect dielectric objects and to exhibit their shape as it works with circularly polarized waves. What makes this paper different from prior work, which presents some experiments using a vector network analyzer set up to work as an SFCW radar, is that the data were acquired with a real system working with circular polarization and using two UWB Archimedean spirals. The calibration procedures as well as the synthetic aperture procedure were developed and validated based on measured data with the SFCW radar. [Termes descripteurs IGN] qualité radiométrique (image)Résumé : (Auteur) The TropiSAR campaign has been conducted in August 2009 in French Guiana with the ONERA airborne radar system SETHI. The main objective of this campaign was to collect data to support the Phase A of the 7th Earth Explorer candidate mission, BIOMASS. Several specific questions needed to be addressed to consolidate the mission concept following the Phase 0 studies, and the data collection strategy was constructed accordingly. More specifically, a tropical forest data set was required in order to provide test data for the evaluation of the foreseen inversion algorithms and data products. The paper provides a description of the resulting data set which is now available through the European Space Agency website under the airborne campaign link. First results from the TropiSAR database analysis are presented with two in-depth analyses about both the temporal radiometric variation and temporal coherence at P-band. The temporal variations of the backscatter values are less than 0.5 dB throughout the campaign, and the coherence values are observed to stay high even after 22 days. These results are essential for the BIOMASS mission. The observed temporal stability of the backscatter is a good indicator of the expected robustness of the biomass estimation in tropical forests, from cross-polarized backscatter values as regarding environmental changes such as soil moisture. The high temporal coherence observed after a 22-day period is a prerequisite for SAR Polarimetric Interferometry and Tomographic applications in a single satellite configuration. The conclusion then summarizes the paper and identifies the next steps in the analysis.
