[Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this paper is to study, on a weekly basis, the explanatory power of one satellite-based measurement, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), for wheat yield modelling in 40 census agricultural regions (CAR) in the Canadian Prairies during the whole growing season using 16 years of NOAA AVHRR satellite data (between 1987 and 2002). We also explore the relative value of NDVI compared with a land-based measurement, the Cumulative Moisture Index (CMI). By developing a series of weekly wheat yield models over the course of the growing season, we are able to determine the accuracy of different models. Our findings indicate that NDVI possesses explanatory power 4 weeks earlier in the season than CMI. [Termes IGN] urbanisationRésumé : (Auteur) The landscape pattern of Daqing City, China, has undergone a significant change over the past 20 years, as a result of the rapid urbanization process. To understand how urbanization has influenced the landscape in Daqing City, the largest base of the petrochemical industry in China, we conducted a series of spatial analyses with landscape pattern maps obtained from Landsat images in 1979, 1990 and 2000. Results indicate that a substantial urban area has been extended during the past two decades, along with the shrinking of wetland and woodland. Spatio-temporal optimization is not a trivial task in developing landscape models. In previous studies, the optimization of spatial and temporal factors was achieved separately, because of the difficulty in formulating them together in a single model. In this study, we adapted the traditional Markov model by obtaining model parameters and neighbourhood rules from a modified genetic algorithm (GA). Model performance was evaluated between the empirical landscape map from the Landsat image and the simulated landscape map from the models. Over three simulation runs, the global deviation (GD) for the three models was 1.37, 1.10 and 1.15, respectively. This result shows that the Markov model and the GA together are able to effectively capture the spatio-temporal trend in the landscape pattern associated with urbanization for this region. The future landscape distribution in 2010, 2030 and 2050 was derived using a spatial Markov model (SMM) for further urban change and planning research. [Termes IGN] reconstruction d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) The frequent presence of clouds in passive remotely sensed imagery severely limits its regular exploitation in various application fields. Thus, the removal of cloud cover from this imagery represents an important preprocessing task consisting in the reconstruction of cloud-contaminated data. The intent of this study is to propose two novel general methods for the reconstruction of areas obscured by clouds in a sequence of multitemporal multispectral images. Given a cloud-contaminated image of the sequence, each area of missing measurements is reconstructed through an unsupervised contextual prediction process that reproduces the local spectro-temporal relationships between the considered image and an opportunely selected subset of the remaining temporal images. In the first method, the contextual prediction process is implemented by means of an ensemble of linear predictors, each trained over a local multitemporal region that is spectrally homogeneous in each temporal image of the selected subset. In order to obtain such regions, each temporal image is locally classified by an unsupervised classifier based on the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. In the second method, the local spectro-temporal relationships are reproduced by a single nonlinear predictor based on the support vector machines (SVM) approach. To illustrate the performance of the two proposed methods, an experimental analysis on a sequence of three temporal images acquired by the Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus sensor over a total period of four months is reported and discussed. It includes a detailed simulation study that aims at assessing with different reconstruction quality criteria the accuracy of the methods in different qualitative and quantitative cloud contamination conditions. Compared with two techniques based on compositing algorithms for cloud removal, the proposed methods show a clear superiority, which makes them a promising and useful tool in solving the considered problem, whose great complexity is commensurate with its practical importance. [Termes IGN] signature spectraleRésumé : (Auteur) Northern landcover mapping for climate change and carbon modeling requires greater detail than what is available from coarse resolution data. Mapping landcover with medium resolution data from Landsat presents challenges due to differences in time and space between scene acquisitions required for full coverage. These differences cause landcover signatures to vary due to haze, solar geometry and phenology, among other factors. One way to circumvent this problem is to have an image interpreter classify each scene independently, however, this is not an optimal solution in the north due to a lack of spatially extensive reference data and resources required to label scenes individually. Another possible approach is to stabilize signatures in space and time so that they may be extracted from one scene and extended to others, thereby reducing the amount of reference data and user input required for mapping large areas. A radiometric normalization approach was developed that exploits the high temporal frequency with which coarse resolution data are acquired and the high spatial frequency of medium resolution data. The current paper compares this radiometric correction methodology with an established absolute calibration methodology for signature extension for landcover classification and explores factors that affect extension performance to recommend how and when signature extension can be applied. Overall, the new normalization method produced better extension and classification results than absolute calibration. Results also showed that extension performance was affected more by geographical distance than by differences in anniversary dates between acquisitions for the range of data examined. Geographical distance in the north-south direction leads to poorer extension performance than distance in the cast west direction due in part to differences in vegetation composition assigned the same class label in the latitudinal direction. While extension performance was somewhat variable and in some cases did not produce a best classification result by itself, it provided an initial best guess of landcover that can subsequently be refined by an expert image interpreter.
