[Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) This paper evaluates the retrieval of soil moisture in the top 5-cm layer at 3-km spatial resolution using L-band dual-copolarized Soil Moisture Active-Passive (SMAP) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data that mapped the globe every three days from mid-April to early July, 2015. Surface soil moisture retrievals using radar observations have been challenging in the past due to complicating factors of surface roughness and vegetation scattering. Here, physically based forward models of radar scattering for individual vegetation types are inverted using a time-series approach to retrieve soil moisture while correcting for the effects of static roughness and dynamic vegetation. Compared with the past studies in homogeneous field scales, this paper performs a stringent test with the satellite data in the presence of terrain slope, subpixel heterogeneity, and vegetation growth. The retrieval process also addresses any deficiencies in the forward model by removing any time-averaged bias between model and observations and by adjusting the strength of vegetation contributions. The retrievals are assessed at 14 core validation sites representing a wide range of global soil and vegetation conditions over grass, pasture, shrub, woody savanna, corn, wheat, and soybean fields. The predictions of the forward models used agree with SMAP measurements to within 0.5 dB unbiased-root-mean-square error (ubRMSE) and -0.05 dB (bias) for both copolarizations. Soil moisture retrievals have an accuracy of 0.052 m3/m3 ubRMSE, -0.015 m3/m3 bias, and a correlation of 0.50, compared to in situ measurements, thus meeting the accuracy target of 0.06 m3/m3 ubRMSE. The successful retrieval demonstrates the feasibility of a physically based time series retrieval with L-band SAR data for characterizing soil moisture over diverse conditions of soil moisture, surface roughness, and vegetation. [Termes IGN] problème inverse
[Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) Pansharpening is the process of fusing a high-resolution panchromatic image and a low-spatial-resolution multispectral image to yield a high-spatial-resolution multispectral image. This is a typical ill-posed inverse problem, and in the past two decades, many methods have been proposed to solve it. Still, there is no general consensus on the best way to quantitatively evaluate the spectral and spatial quality of the fused image. In this paper, we compare the two most widely used and accepted methods for quality evaluation. The first method is the verification of the synthesis property which states that the fused image should be as identical as possible to the multispectral image that the sensor would observe at a higher resolution. This is impossible to verify unless the observed images are spatially degraded so that the original observed multispectral image can be used as reference. The second method is to use metrics that do not use a reference, such as the quality no reference (QNR) metrics. However, there is another property, i.e., the consistency property, which states that the fused image reduced to the resolution of the original multispectral image should be as identical to the original image as possible. This has generally been considered a necessary condition that does not have to imply correct fusion. Using real WorldView-2 and QuickBird data and a total of 18 component substitution and multiresolution analysis methods, we demonstrate that the consistency property can indeed be used to give reliable assessment of the relative performance of pansharpening methods and is superior to using the QNR metrics. [Termes IGN] teneur en eau de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) Retrieval of vegetation parameters from remotely sensed data using a radiative transfer model is generally hampered by the ill-posed inverse problem, which dramatically decreases the precision level of retrieved parameters. The purpose of this study was to use a Bayesian network-based method to allow the alleviation of the ill-posed inverse problem. This was achieved by introducing the correlations between the model free parameters into their prior joint probability distribution (PJPD), allowing the reduction of the probabilities of unrealistic combinations. Three sampling strategies intended to design three types of PJPDs that considered different correlations (represented by a correlation matrix) were presented. They were multivariate uniform distribution composed by independent free parameters, multivariate uniform distribution based on a simple correlation matrix, and multivariate Gaussian distribution based on a complicated correlation matrix, respectively. A case study of the presented method to retrieve leaf area index (LAI) and canopy water content (CWC) using the PROSAIL_5B (PROSPECT-5 + 4SAIL) model from Landsat 8 products was implemented. Results indicate that the presented method greatly improves the precision level of target parameters, with the coefficient of determination R2 of 0.69, 0.77, and 0.82 and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.55, 0.51, and 0.44 m2 · m-2 for LAI and R2 = 0.68, 0.78, and 0.84 and RMSE = 230, 198, and 166 g · m-2 for CWC, respectively. Hence, the ill-posed inverse problem can be alleviated by the presented method, which can be widely applied for vegetation parameters retrieval.
