[Termes IGN] problème inverseRésumé : (Auteur) In many geoscientific applications, one needs to recover the quantities of interest from indirect observations blurred by colored noise. Such quantities often correspond to the values of bounded linear functionals acting on the solution of some observation equation. For example, various quantities are derived from harmonic coefficients of the Earth’s gravity potential. Each such coefficient is the value of the corresponding linear functional. The goal of this paper is to discuss new means to use information about the noise covariance structure, which allows order-optimal estimation of the functionals of interest and does not involve a covariance operator directly in the estimation process. It is done on the basis of a balancing principle for the choice of the regularization parameter, which is new in geoscientific applications. A number of tests demonstrate its applicability. In particular, we could find appropriate regularization parameters by knowing a small part of the gravitational field on the Earth’s surface with high precision and reconstructing the rest globally by downward continuation from satellite data. [Termes IGN] variogrammeRésumé : (Auteur) Many satellite images have a coarser spatial resolution than the extent of land cover patterns on the ground, leading to mixed pixels whose composite spectral response consists of responses from multiple land cover classes. Spectral unmixing procedures only determine the fractions of such classes within a coarse pixel without locating them in space. Super-resolution or sub-pixel mapping aims at providing a fine resolution map of class labels, one that displays realistic spatial structure (without artifact discontinuities) and reproduces the coarse resolution fractions. In this paper, existing approaches for super-resolution mapping are placed within an inverse problem framework, and a geostatistical method is proposed for generating alternative synthetic land cover maps at the fine (target) spatial resolution; these super-resolution realizations are consistent with all the information available. More precisely, indicator coKriging is used to approximate the probability that a pixel at the fine spatial resolution belongs to a particular class, given the coarse resolution fractions and (if available) a sparse set of class labels at some informed fine pixels. Such Kriging-derived probabilities are used in sequential indicator simulation to generate synthetic maps of class labels at the fine resolution pixels. This non-iterative and fast simulation procedure yields alternative super-resolution land cover maps that reproduce: (i) the observed coarse fractions, (ii) the fine resolution class labels that might be available, and (iii) the prior structural information encapsulated in a set of indicator variogram models at the fine resolution. A case study is provided to illustrate the proposed methodology using Landsat TM data from SE China. [Termes IGN] problème inverseRésumé : (auteur) The problem of finding the density distribution of the Earth from gravity data is called the inverse gravimetric problem. It is well known that this problem has not a unique solution. A possible approach to force the uniqueness of the solution is to impose the solution to realize a minimum of energy, that is to be an equilibrium distribution. Several authors have considered this possibility by setting the energy to the sole energy of the potential field. In this paper, we show that such approaches correspond to the maximization of a quadratic form in the set of the density distributions considered as an Hilbert space. As a consequence, they cannot deliver realistic results without a constraint that reduces the set of possible density distributions to a bounded domain of the considered Hilbert space. Moreover, under such constraints, the result will necessarily be located at the boundary of the searched domain. In order to express a steady state condition leading to a freer solution, we propose to introduce a compression energy. We choose the state equation of Murnaghan that is known to apply reasonably in the upper mantle. We give an integral form of the compression energy and show that the resulting total energy admits a lower bound, which assess the existence of a solution. Finally, we derive a differential equation verified by that the absolute minima from the equilibrium equation under its local form.
