[Termes IGN] température au solRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate estimation of vegetation phenology (the start/end of growing season, SOS/EOS) is important to understand the feedbacks of vegetation to meteorological circumstances. Because the evergreen forests have limited change in greenness, there are relatively less study to predict evergreen conifer forests phenology, especially for EOS in autumn. Using 11-year (2000–2010) records of MODIS normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI), together with gross primary production (GPP) and temperature data at five evergreen conifer forests flux sites in Canada, we comprehensively evaluated the performances of several variables in modeling flux-derived EOS. Results showed that neither NDVI nor EVI can be used to predict EOS as they had no significant correlation with ground observations. In comparison, temperature had a better predictive strength for EOS, and R2 between EOS and mean temperature (Tmean), the maximum temperature (Tmax, daytime temperature) and the minimum temperature (Tmin, nighttime temperature) were 0.45 (RMSE = 5.1 days), 0.32 (RMSE = 5.7 days) and 0.58 (RMSE = 4.6 days), respectively. These results suggest an unreported role of nighttime temperature in regulating EOS of evergreen forests, in comparison with previous study showing leaf-out in spring by daytime temperature. Furthermore, we demonstrated that it may be because nighttime temperature has a higher relationship with soil temperature (Ts) (R2 = 0.67, p Numéro de notice : A2018-403 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2018.08.013 Date de publication en ligne : 17/08/2018 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2018.08.013 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=90855

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) In order to record the seasonal changes in aboveground biomass production (trunk and branches) in a forest, changes in wood density must be taken into account. A 60-year-old beech forest displayed a large intra-annual variability in its aboveground woody biomass production efficiency. This variation followed a seasonal trend with a maximum during the summer while gross primary production was rather low. In the current context of land use and climate change, there is a need to precisely quantify the carbon (C) balance of forest ecosystems, and more specifically, of C allocation to tree compartments. We quantified the seasonal changes in the aboveground biomass production (aBP) of a beech forest growing on two different soils: an alocrisol and a calci-brunisol. In addition, for the alocrisol ecosystem, we assessed the existence and degree of intra-annual variability in the ratio of wood aBP to gross primary production (GPP), i.e., the wood aBP efficiency. The study site is a 60-year-old beech forest in northeastern France. An eddy covariance tower records continuously net ecosystem exchange. To investigate the temporal changes in aBP, mini-cores were drilled and diameter at breast height measurements were taken on a monthly basis from 45 trees for both stands studied over 2014. A clear difference in aBP was observed between the two soils with the alocrisol being more productive than the calci-brunisol. For the alocrisol, both woody aBP and GPP changed over the course of the year, reaching peak values during June (6 and 12.5 gC m−2 day−1, respectively). Wood applied bias photon-to-current efficiency aboveground Biomass Production Efficiency (aBPE) also showed important intra-annual variations, ranging from 0.09 in September to 0.58 in July. Wood density varied throughout the year, and not taking it into account would have led to an overestimation of aBP by as much as 20% in April and May. Our study highlights the importance of taking wood density into account for intra-annual studies of aBP. Wood aBPE cannot be considered as constant as it fluctuated from 0.09 to 0.58 throughout the year for an annual value of 0.34. The potential error in wood aBPE stemming from not taking these changes into account amounts to 15%. [Termes IGN] Toscane (Italie)Résumé : (auteur) The extraction of forest information from SAR images is particularly complex in Mediterranean areas, since they are characterized by high spatial fragmentation and heterogeneity. We have investigated the use of multi-frequency SAR data from different sensors (ALOS/PALSAR and ENVISAT/ASAR) for estimating forest biomass in two test areas in Central Italy (San Rossore and Molise), where detailed in-situ measurements and Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) data were available. The study focused on the estimation of growing stock volume (GS, in m3/ha) by using an inversion algorithm based on artificial neural networks (ANN). The ANN algorithm was first appropriately trained using the available GS estimates obtained from ALS data. The potential of this algorithm was then improved through the innovative use of a simulated dataset, generated by a forward electromagnetic model based on the Radiative Transfer Theory (RTT). The algorithm is able to merge SAR data at L and C bands for predicting GS in diversified Mediterranean environments. The performed analyses indicated that GS was correctly estimated by integrating information from L and C bands on both test areas, with the following statistics: R > 0.97 and RMSE = 28.5 m3/ha for the independent test, and R = 0.86 and RMSE ≈ 77 m3/ha for the final independent validation, the latter performed on the forest stands of both areas not included in the ALS acquisitions and where conventional measurements were available. The research then illustrates the potential of using the obtained GS estimates from SAR data to drive the simulations of forest net primary production (NPP). This experiment produced spatially explicit estimates of GS current annual increments that are slightly less accurate than those obtained from ground observations (R = 0.75 and RMSE ≈ 1.5 m3/ha/year). [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Key message : A daily 1-km Pan-European weather dataset can drive the BIOME-BGC model for the estimation of current and future beech gross primary production (GPP). Annual beech GPP is affected primarily by spring temperature and more irregularly by summer water stress.
Context : The spread of beech forests in Europe enhances the importance of modelling and monitoring their growth in view of ongoing climate changes.
Aims : The current paper assesses the capability of a biogeochemical model to simulate beech gross primary production (GPP) using a Pan-European 1-km weather dataset.
Methods : The model BIOME-BGC is applied in four European forest ecosystems having different climatic conditions where the eddy covariance technique is used to measure water and carbon fluxes. The experiment is in three main steps. First, the accuracy of BIOME-BGC GPP simulations is assessed through comparison with flux observations. Second, the influence of two major meteorological drivers (spring minimum temperature and growing season dryness) on observed and simulated inter-annual GPP variations is analysed. Lastly, the impacts of two climate change scenarios on beech GPP are evaluated through statistical analyses of the ground data and model simulations.
Results : The weather dataset can drive BIOME-BGC to simulate most of the beech GPP evolution in all four test areas. Both observed and simulated inter-annual GPP variations are mainly dependent on minimum temperature around the beginning of the growing season, while spring/summer dryness exerts a secondary role. BIOME-BGC can also reasonably predict the impacts of the examined climate change scenarios.
Conclusion : The proposed modelling approach is capable of approximately reproducing spatial and temporal beech GPP variations and impacts of expected climate changes in the examined European sites.

Numéro de notice : 17444 Affiliation des auteurs : LIF (2012-2019) Thématique : FORET Nature : HDR Note de thèse : HDR : Productivité forestière : Lorraine : 2016 nature-HAL : HDR Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=89271 Regional dynamics of terrestrial vegetation productivity and climate feedbacks for territory of Ukraine / Dmytro Movchan in International journal of geographical information science IJGIS, vol 29 n° 8 (August 2015)PermalinkThe potential of the greenness and radiation (GR) model to interpret 8-day gross primary production of vegetation / Chaoyang Wu in ISPRS Journal of photogrammetry and remote sensing, vol 88 (February 2014)PermalinkPrélèvements et production de bois / Nathalie Derrière in Forêt entreprise, n° 212 (septembre - octobre 2013)PermalinkLandscape controls over major nutrients and primary productivity of Arctic lakes / P.
