[Termes IGN] profondeurRésumé : (Auteur) This article illustrates two techniques for merging daily aerosol optical depth (AOD) measurements from satellite and ground-based data sources to achieve optimal data quality and spatial coverage. The first technique is a traditional Universal Kriging (UK) approach employed to predict AOD from multi-sensor aerosol products that are aggregated on a reference grid with AERONET as ground truth. The second technique is spatial statistical data fusion (SSDF); a method designed for massive satellite data interpolation. Traditional kriging has computational complexity O(N3), making it impractical for large datasets. Our version of UK accommodates massive data inputs by performing kriging locally, while SSDF accommodates massive data inputs by modelling their covariance structure with a low-rank linear model. In this study, we use aerosol data products from two satellite instruments: the moderate resolution imaging spectrometer and the geostationary operational environmental satellite, covering the Continental United States. [Termes IGN] sondeur multifaisceauxRésumé : (Auteur) This paper deals with the problem of systematic depth errors made in surveying dumped rocks with multibeam echosounder. These errors may induce dangers for navigation in very shallow water areas or huge costs for coastal engineering contractors who perform rock dumping operation and surveying. We analyze results from four different multibeam echosounder systems and compare those data to a reference digital terrain model of a dumped rocks area obtained from a 3D terrestrial laser scanner. The systematic depth errors are statistically described and analysed on local areas. Finally, we propose a look-up table linking the error amplitude with the rock size, resulting from our error analysis. [Termes IGN] profondeurRésumé : (Auteur) The metric nature of stereoscopic depth perception has remained an enigma. Several mathematical formulations proposed for measuring the stereoscopic effect have not shown to be reliable. This may be due to the lack of a conceptual distinction between the 3D model geometrically obtained by intersection of visual rays (geometric model), and the 3D model perceived in the observer's mind (perceptual model). Based on the assumption that retinal parallax is the only source of information on depth available to the brain, we developed an equation that shows real and perceptual space to be connected by a logarithmic function. This relationship has allowed us to formulate the vertical exaggeration for all sorts of stereoscopic conditions, including natural stereovision. The obtained formulations might involve possibilities of technological applications, such as the artificial recreation of a natural stereovision effect, ant the design of stereoscopic instruments with a desired degree of vertical exaggeration. [Termes IGN] VanuatuRésumé : (Auteur) Knowledge of the position and motion of points on the seafloor can be critically important in both fundamental research (for example, global geodesy and plate tectonics) and for more practical applications such as seismic risk evaluation, off-shore construction and pipeline monitoring. In the Vanuatu subduction zone, for example, measuring deformation underwater could provide valuable information for modeling deformation and understanding the seismic cycle. We report a shallow water experiment in Vanuatu to measure the relative and absolute depth of seafloor points. The experiment differs from previous efforts mainly in that it uses the height of the sea surface determined by kinematic GPS, allowing us to locate the points in a global reference frame. The ITRF2005 ellipsoidal height of a seafloor benchmark was determined with a 1-sigma uncertainty of 0.7–2.1 cm. The estimated ellipsoidal height differs only by a few tenths of a centimeter between measurements made in 2004 and another set made in 2006. These results are encouraging and open new perspectives for vertical underwater deformation monitoring in shallow water areas. Sea-surface GPS measurements can also help to reduce the uncertainty in depth difference determination for relative measurements.
