Five different date images were acquired during January 2015–April 2015 at different growth stages from tillering to ripening in Varanasi district, India. The winter wheat crop parameters, i.e. leaf area index, vegetation water content (VWC), fresh biomass (FB), dry biomass (DB) and plant height (PH) were estimated using random forest regression (RFR), support vector regression (SVR), artificial neural network regression (ANNR) and linear regression (LR) algorithms. The Ground Range Detected products of Interferometric Wide (IW) Swath were used at VV polarization. The three different subplots of 1 m2 area were taken for the measurement of crop parameters at every growth stage. In total, 73 samples were taken as the training data-sets and 39 samples were taken as testing data-sets. The highest sensitivity (adj. R2 = 0.95579) of backscattering with VWC was found using RFR algorithm, whereas the lowest sensitivity (adj. R2 = 0.66201) was found for the PH using LR algorithm. Overall results indicate more accurate estimation of winter wheat parameters by the RFR algorithm followed by SVR, ANNR and LR algorithms. [Termes IGN] occupation du solRésumé : (Auteur) This paper presents an improved classification and mapping of vegetation types for all of Japan by utilizing the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. The Nadir BRDF-Adjusted Reflectance (MCD43A4 product) data were compared to the conventional Surface Reflectance (MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products) data for the classification of vegetation types: evergreen coniferous forest, evergreen broadleaf forest, deciduous coniferous forest, deciduous broadleaf forest, shrubs, herbaceous, arable; and non-vegetation. Very rich spectral and temporal features were prepared from MCD43A4 and MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products. Random Forests classifier was employed for the classification of vegetation types with the support of ground truth data prepared in the research. Accuracy metrics—confusion matrix, overall accuracy, and kappa coefficient calculated through 10-fold cross-validation approach—were used for quantitative comparison of MCD43A4 and MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products. The cross-validation results indicated better performance of the MCD43A4 (Overall accuracy = 0.73; Kappa coefficient = 0.69) product than conventional MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products (Overall accuracy = 0.70; Kappa coefficient = 0.66) for the classification. McNemar’s test was also used to confirm a significant difference (p-value = 0.0003) between MCD43A4 and MOD09A1/MOY09A1 products. Based on these results, by utilizing the MCD43A4 features, a new vegetation map was produced for all of Japan. The newly produced map showed better accuracy than the extant, MODIS Land Cover Type product (MCD12Q1) and Global Land Cover by National Mapping Organizations (GLCNMO) product in Japan. [Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (Auteur) Accurate and repeatable mapping of biological plant invasions is essential to develop successful management strategies for conserving native biodiversity. While overstory invasive plants have been successfully detected and mapped using multiple methods, understory invasive detection remains a challenge, particularly in dense forested environments. Very few studies have utilized an approach that identifies and aligns the acquisition timing of remote sensing imagery with peak phenological differences between understory and overstory vegetation types. We investigated this opportunity by analyzing a monthly time-series of 2011 Landsat TM data to identify acquisition periods with the highest phenological differences between understory and overstory vegetation for detecting the spatial distribution of the exotic understory plant Ligustrum sinense Lour., a rapidly spreading invader in urbanizing regions of the southeastern United States. We used vegetation indices (VI) to establish intra-annual phenological trends for L. sinense, evergreen forest, and deciduous forest located in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA. We developed Random Forest (RF) models to detect L. sinense from those time steps exhibiting the highest phenological differences. We assessed the relative contribution of VI and topographic indices (TI) to the detection of L. sinense. We compared the top performing models and used the best overall model to produce a map of L. sinense for the study area. RF models that included VI, TI, and Landsat TM bands for March 13 and 29, 2011 (the periods with highest detected phenological differences), produced the highest overall accuracy and Kappa estimates, outperforming the combination of VI and TI by 8.5% in accuracy and 20.5% in Kappa. The top performing model from the RF produced a Kappa of 0.75. Our findings suggest that selecting remote sensing data for a period when phenological differences between L. sinense and forest types are at their peak can improve the detection and mapping of L. sinense. [Termes IGN] Viet NamRésumé : (Auteur) This study developed an approach to map rice-cropping systems in An Giang and Dong Thap provinces, South Vietnam using multi-temporal Sentinel-1A (S1A) data. The data were processed through four steps: (1) data pre-processing, (2) constructing smooth time series VH backscatter data, (3) rice crop classification using random forests (RF) and support vector machines (SVM) and (4) accuracy assessment. The results indicated that the smooth VH backscatter profiles reflected the temporal characteristics of rice-cropping patterns in the study region. The comparisons between the classification results and the ground reference data indicated that the overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient achieved from RF were 86.1% and 0.72, respectively, which were slightly more accurate than SVM (overall accuracy of 83.4% and Kappa coefficient of 0.67). These results were reaffirmed by the government’s rice area statistics with the relative error in area (REA) values of 0.2 and 2.2% for RF and SVM, respectively.
