[Termes IGN] système de référence localRésumé : (Auteur) The enormous increase in the volume of datasets acquired by lidar systems is leading towards their extensive exploitation in a variety of applications, such as, surface reconstruction, city modeling, and generation of perspective views. Though being a fairly new technology, lidar has been influenced by and had a significant impact on photogrammetry. Such an influence or impact can be attributed to the complementary nature of the information provided by the two systems. For example, photogrammetric processing of imagery produces accurate information regarding object space break lines (discontinuities). On the other hand, lidar provides accurate information describing homogeneous physical surfaces. Hence, it proves logical to combine data from the two sensors to arrive at a more robust and complete reconstruction of 3D objects. This paper introduces alternative approaches for the registration of data captured by photogrammetric and lidar systems to a common reference frame. The first approach incorporates lidar features as control for establishing the datum in the photogrammetric bundle adjustment. The second approach starts by manipulating the photogrammetric imagery to produce a 3D model, including a set of linear features along object space discontinuities, relative to an arbitrarily chosen coordinate system. Afterwards, conjugate photogrammetric and lidar straightline features are used to establish the transformation between the arbitrarily chosen photogrammetric coordinate system and the lidar reference frame. The second approach (bundle adjustment, followed by similarity transformation) is general enough to be applied for the co-registration of multiple three-dimensional datasets regardless of their origin (e.g., adjacent lidar strips, surfaces in Gis databases, and temporal elevation data). The registration procedure would allow for the identification of inconsistencies between the surfaces in question. Such inconsistencies might arise from changes taking place within the object space or inaccurate calibration of the internal characteristics of the lidar and the photogrammetric systems. Therefore, the proposed methodology is useful for change detection and system calibration applications. Experimental results from aerial and terrestrial datasets proved the feasibility of the suggested methodologies. [Termes IGN] tessellationRésumé : (Auteur) Current terrain modelling algorithms are not capable of reconstructing 3D surfaces, but are restricted to so-called 2.5D surfaces: for one planimetric position only one height may exist. The objective of this paper is to extend terrain relief modelling to 3D. In a 3D terrain model overhangs and caves, cliffs and tunnels will be presented correctly. Random measurement errors, limitations in data sampling and the requirement for a smooth surface rule out a triangulation of the original measurements as the final terrain model. A new algorithm, starting from a triangular mesh in 3D and following the subdivision paradigm will be presented. It is a stepwise refinement of a polygonal mesh, in which the location of the vertices on the next level is computed from the vertices on the current level. This yields a series of triangulated terrain surfaces with increasing point density and smaller angles between adjacent triangles, converging to a smooth surface. With the proposed algorithm, the special requirements in terrain modelling, e.g. breaklines can be considered. The refinement process can be stopped as soon as a resolution suitable for a specific application is obtained. Examples of an overhang, a bridge which is modelled as part of the terrain surface and for a 2.5D terrain surface are presented. The implications of extending modelling to 3D are discussed for typical terrain model applications. [Termes IGN] reconstruction 3DRésumé : (Auteur) Medical applications such as bedsore analysis often require 3D surface reconstruction of the human body. Major surface reconstruction techniques are based on mechanical digitizers, laser scanners and vision systems, including photogrammetry. Multi-camera systems can greatly reduce ambiguity resulting from loss of information associated with the perspective mapping of a 3D scene onto a 2D image. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) Early in 2004, the Geographic Department of the city of Apeldoorn, a large city in the center of the Netherlands, started investigating the options available for creating a realistic digital 3D model of the city. Both still images and real-time applications were required. This project is part of an ongoing movement within the city's organization to continually increase the quality of the geographic data maintened in order to improve communication with the citizens.
