[Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (auteur) Motivated by the needs of a scalable out-of-core surface reconstruction algorithm available on the cloud, this paper addresses the computation of distributed Delaunay triangulations of massive point sets. The proposed algorithm takes as input a point cloud and first partitions it across multiple processing elements into tiles of relatively homogeneous point sizes. The distributed computation and communication between processing
elements is orchestrated so that each one discovers the Delaunay neighbors of its input points within the theoretical overall Delaunay triangulation of all points and computes locally a partial view of this triangulation. This approach prevents memory limitations
by never materializing the global triangulation. This efficiency is due to our proposed uncentralized model to represent, manage and locally construct the triangulation corresponding to each tile. The point set is first partitioned into non-overlapping tiles, then we construct within each tile the Delaunay triangulation of the local points and a minimal set of replicated foreign points in order to capture the simplices spanning multiple tiles. Inspired by the star splaying approach for Delaunay triangulation computation/repair, communication is limited to exchanging points of potential Delaunay neighbors across tiles. Therefore, our method is guaranteed to reconstruct, within each tile, a triangulation that contains the star of its local points, as though it were computed within the Delaunay triangulation of all points. The proposed algorithm is implemented with Spark for the scheduling and C++ for the geometric computations. This allows both an optimal scheduling on multiple machines and efficient low-level computation. The results show the efficiency of our algorithm in terms of speedup and strong scaling on a classical Spark configuration with both synthetic and real use case

[Termes IGN] voisinage (relation topologique)Résumé : (auteur) Estimating visibility in point clouds has many applications such as visualization, surface reconstruction and scene analysis through fusion of LiDAR point clouds and images. However, most current works rely on methods that require strong assumptions on the point cloud density, which are not valid for LiDAR point clouds acquired from mobile mapping systems, leading to low quality of point visibility estimations. This work presents a novel approach for the estimation of the visibility of a point cloud from a viewpoint. The method is designed to be fully automatic and it makes no assumption on the point cloud density. The visibility of each point is estimated by considering its screen-space neighborhood from the given viewpoint. Our results show that our approach succeeds better in estimating the visibility on real-world data acquired using LiDAR scanners. We evaluate our approach by comparing its results to a new manually annotated dataset, which we make available online. The ethnic minorities that made up immigrant communities in North American towns and cities during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries have been of particular interest to social historians (Tosh 2017, From the ‘cape of despair’ to the Cape of Good Hope: letters of the emigrant poor in early nineteenth-century England. Social History 42:480–500). However, language barriers and low rates of literacy often limit the number of first person accounts written by people who belonged to such communities. This paper explores how terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and 3D reconstructive modeling of heritage buildings can provide new insights into the social history of Chinese immigrants in Alberta during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These technologies were used to rapidly and accurately document the Quon Sang Lung Laundry shop in Fort Macleod, Alberta, prior to its scheduled demolition. The resulting digital data sets were used to construct detailed architectural plans of the building, as well as photorealistic 3D reconstructions of the shop, as it would have appeared at different points in history. The resulting point clouds were further explored to detect and extract evidence of the lived experiences of its occupants. For example, the conflicts and tensions surrounding Chinese laundries, and the discriminatory bylaws that resulted, may be subtly reflected in specific architectural details of the laundry shop, such as evidence for the presence of walls no longer standing. The ability to return to accurate digital models, over and over again, provides unique opportunities to construct social histories of buildings long after they are gone. [Termes IGN] temps réelRésumé : (Auteur) Event cameras are bio-inspired vision sensors that output pixel-level brightness changes instead of standard intensity frames. They offer significant advantages over standard cameras, namely a very high dynamic range, no motion blur, and a latency in the order of microseconds. However, because the output is composed of a sequence of asynchronous events rather than actual intensity images, traditional vision algorithms cannot be applied, so that a paradigm shift is needed. We introduce the problem of event-based multi-view stereo (EMVS) for event cameras and propose a solution to it. Unlike traditional MVS methods, which address the problem of estimating dense 3D structure from a set of known viewpoints, EMVS estimates semi-dense 3D structure from an event camera with known trajectory. Our EMVS solution elegantly exploits two inherent properties of an event camera: (1) its ability to respond to scene edges—which naturally provide semi-dense geometric information without any pre-processing operation—and (2) the fact that it provides continuous measurements as the sensor moves. Despite its simplicity (it can be implemented in a few lines of code), our algorithm is able to produce accurate, semi-dense depth maps, without requiring any explicit data association or intensity estimation. We successfully validate our method on both synthetic and real data. Our method is computationally very efficient and runs in real-time on a CPU. [Termes IGN] structure-from-motionRésumé : (Auteur) The geometry of impounded surfaces is a key tool to reservoir storage management and projection. Yet topographic data and bathymetric surveys of average-aged reservoirs may be absent for many regions worldwide. This paper examines the potential of contour line interpolation (TOPO) and Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry to reconstruct the topography of existing reservoirs prior to dam closure. The study centres on the Paso de las Piedras reservoir, Argentina, and assesses the accuracy and reliability of TOPO- and SfM- derived digital elevation models (DEMs) using different grid resolutions. All DEMs were of acceptable quality. However, different interpolation techniques produced different types of error, which increased (or decreased) with increasing (or decreasing) grid resolution as a function of their nature, and relative to the terrain complexity. In terms of DEM reliability to reproduce area–elevation relationships, processing-related disagreements between DEMs were markedly influenced by topography. Even though they produce intrinsic errors, it is concluded that both TOPO and SfM techniques hold great potential to reconstruct the bathymetry of existing reservoirs. For areas exhibiting similar terrain complexity, the implementation of one or another technique will depend ultimately on the need for preserving accurate elevation (TOPO) or topographic detail (SfM).
