[Termes descripteurs IGN] synthèse d'imageRésumé : (Auteur) We propose a systematic learning-based approach to the generation of massive quantities of synthetic 3D scenes and arbitrary numbers of photorealistic 2D images thereof, with associated ground truth information, for the purposes of training, benchmarking, and diagnosing learning-based computer vision and robotics algorithms. In particular, we devise a learning-based pipeline of algorithms capable of automatically generating and rendering a potentially infinite variety of indoor scenes by using a stochastic grammar, represented as an attributed Spatial And-Or Graph, in conjunction with state-of-the-art physics-based rendering. Our pipeline is capable of synthesizing scene layouts with high diversity, and it is configurable inasmuch as it enables the precise customization and control of important attributes of the generated scenes. It renders photorealistic RGB images of the generated scenes while automatically synthesizing detailed, per-pixel ground truth data, including visible surface depth and normal, object identity, and material information (detailed to object parts), as well as environments (e.g., illuminations and camera viewpoints). We demonstrate the value of our synthesized dataset, by improving performance in certain machine-learning-based scene understanding tasks—depth and surface normal prediction, semantic segmentation, reconstruction, etc.—and by providing benchmarks for and diagnostics of trained models by modifying object attributes and scene properties in a controllable manner. [Termes descripteurs IGN] variation temporelleRésumé : (Auteur) Tidal flats (TFs) occupy approximately 7% of the total coastal shelf areas worldwide. However, TFs are unavailable in most global digital elevation models (DEMs) due to water-impermeable nature of existing remote sensing approaches (e.g., radar used for WorldDEM™ and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission DEM and optical stereo-pairs used for ASTER Global Digital Elevation Map Version 2). However, this problem can be circumvented using remote sensing imageries to observe land exposure at different tidal heights during each revisit. This work exploits Landsat-4/-5/-7/-8 Thematic Mapper (TM)/Enhanced TM Plus/Operational Land Imager imageries to reconstruct topography of a TF, namely, Hsiang-Shan Wetland in Taiwan, to unveil its formation and temporal changes since the 1980s. We first classify water areas by applying modified normalized difference water index to each Landsat image and normalize chances of water exposure to create an inundation probability map. This map is then scaled by tidal amplitudes extracted from DTU10 tide model to convert the probabilities into actual elevations. After building DEM at intertidal zone, a water level-area curve is established, and accuracy of DEM is validated by sea level (SL) at the timing of each Landsat snapshot. A 22-year (1992–2013) dataset composed of 227 Landsat scenes are analyzed and compared with tide gauge data. Root-mean-square differences of SL reaches 48 cm with a correlation coefficient of 0.93, indicating that the present technique is useful for constructing accurate coastal DEMs, and that products can be utilized for estimating instant SL. This study shows the possibility of exploring evolution of intertidal zones using an archive of optical remote sensing imageries. The technique developed in the present study potentially helps in quantifying SL from the start of optical remote sensing era. It is computationally attractive, as it can be computed non-iteratively. However, it has limitations: it does not handle coupled measurements, which should be held out simultaneously, and is specific to the principle of leave-one-out, which is known to overfit when used for selecting a model’s complexity. We propose multiple-exclusion PRESS (MEXPRESS), which generalizes PRESS to coupled measurements and other types of cross-validation, while retaining computational efficiency with the non-iterative MEXPRESS formula. Using MEXPRESS, various strategies to resolve overfitting can be efficiently implemented. The core principle is to exclude training data too ‘close’ or too ‘similar’ to the validation data. We show that this allows one to select the number of control points automatically in three cases: (i) the estimation of linear fractional warps for dense image registration from point correspondences, (ii) surface reconstruction from a dense depth-map obtained by a depth sensor and (iii) surface reconstruction from a sparse point cloud obtained by shape-from-template. A key issue in image registration is to reliably establish the correspondences between the feature points extracted from the reference and sensed images. A new point matching algorithm is proposed in this paper to align two SAR images. In the proposed method, by considering image patches as the basic units, a novel local descriptor including the intensity and geometric information is assigned to each feature point, which is more robust to speckle noise. Furthermore, a correspondence establishment scheme is introduced based on the reconstruction errors between feature points calculated by the sparse representation (SR) technique, which is designed for achieving accurate matches. Based on the obtained SR coefficients, a coordinate correction procedure is further proposed for improving the localization accuracy of the obtained correspondences. Both simulated deformed and real SAR images are utilized to evaluate the performance. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method yields a better registration performance in terms of both accuracy and robustness. Although many studies have been conducted, there is still lack of satisfying results due to the incomplete typology of building patterns and the ineffective extraction methods. This study aims at providing a typology with four types of building patterns (e.g., collinear patterns, curvilinear patterns, parallel and perpendicular groups, and grid patterns) and presenting four integrated strategies for extracting these patterns effectively and efficiently. First, the multilevel graph partition method is utilized to generate globally optimal building clusters considering area, shape and visual distance similarities. In this step, the weights of similarity measurements are automatically estimated using Relief-F algorithm instead of manual selection, thus building clusters with high quality can be obtained. Second, based on the clusters produced in the first step, the extraction strategies group the buildings from each cluster into patterns according to the criteria of proximity, continuity and directionality. The proposed methods are tested using three datasets. The experimental results indicate that the proposed methods can produce satisfying results, and demonstrate that the F-Histogram model is better than the two widely used models (i.e., centroid model and the Voronoi graph) to represent relative directions for building patterns extraction.
