To identify management actions that will maximize carbon removal and storage over the long term, models are needed that accurately and realistically represent forest responses to changing climate. The most widely used growth and yield model in the United States (U.S.), the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS), which also forms the basis for several forest carbon calculators, does not currently include the direct effect of climate variation on tree growth. We incorporated the effects of climate on tree diameter growth by combining tree-ring data with forest inventory data to parameterize a suite of alternative models characterizing the growth of three dominant tree species in the arid and moisture-limited state of Utah. These species, Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws, Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca Mayr (Franco), and Picea engelmannii Parry ex Engelm., encompass the full elevational range of montane forest types. The alternative models we considered differed progressively from the current FVS large-tree diameter growth model, first by changing to an annual time step, then by adding interannual climate effects, followed by model simplification (removal of predictors), and finally, complexification, including effects of spatial variation in climate and two-way interactions between predictors. We validated diameter growth predictions from these models with independent observations, and evaluated model performance in terms of accuracy, precision, and bias. We then compared predictions of future growth made by the existing large-tree diameter growth model used in FVS, i.e., without climate effects, to those of our updated models, including those with climate effects. We found that simpler models of tree growth outperform the current FVS model, and that the incorporation of climate effects improves model performance for two out of three species, in which growth is currently overpredicted by FVS. Diameter growth projected with improved, climate-sensitive models is less than the future tree growth projected by the current climate-insensitive FVS model. Tree rings can be used to identify and incorporate drivers of growth variation into a stand-level growth and yield model, giving more accurate predictions of the carbon uptake potential of forests under climate change. [Termes IGN] rendementRésumé : (Auteur) Digital elevation model (DEM) data were used with climate data to estimate productivity in 19 Eucalyptus plantations in Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Typically, plantation and individual stand growth and productivity estimates, such as Site Index (SI) and Mean Annual Increment (MAI), are based on field measures of height, tree diameter and age. Using a Random Forest modelling approach, SI and MAI were related to: (i) DEM-based geomorphometric variables and (ii) WorldClim historical macro-climatic measures. Three operational SI classes (high, medium and low productivity) in 180 stands were mapped with an overall accuracy of 91.6%. Medium and high productivity sites were the most accurately classified. Low productivity sites had 76.5% producer’s accuracy and 92.9% user’s accuracy, and were the most extensive in the study area. Such sites are considered of high importance from a plantation management perspective since additional forestry operations are likely required to address low productivity and growth. [Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) Management of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Norway requires a forest growth and yield model suitable for describing stand dynamics of even-aged forests under contemporary climatic conditions with and without the effects of silvicultural thinning. A system of equations forming such a stand-level growth and yield model fitted to long-term experimental data is presented here. The growth and yield model consists of component equations for (i) dominant height, (ii) stem density (number of stems per hectare), (iii) total basal area, (iv) and total stem volume fitted simultaneously using seemingly unrelated regression. The component equations for stem density, basal area, and volume include a thinning modifier to forecast stand dynamics in thinned stands. It was shown that thinning significantly increased basal area and volume growth while reducing competition related mortality. No significant effect of thinning was found on dominant height. Model examination by means of various fit statistics indicated no obvious bias and improvement in prediction accuracy in comparison to existing models in general. An application of the developed stand-level model comparing different management scenarios exhibited plausible long-term behavior and we propose this is therefore suitable for national deployment. Pour la réalisation de ce projet, nous nous appuyons sur un relevé tachéométrique réalisé en 2019 dans le cadre d’un relevé topographique pour un projet éolien. L’objectif étant de trouver des solutions permettant d’augmenter la productivité de réalisation de ces travaux. Pour cela, nous avons utilisé un scanner statique terrestre, un scanner à main et un capteur LiDAR aéroporté. Ces acquisitions nous ont permis de comparer quantitativement les données selon l’appareil utilisé. Nous avons aussi pu comparer de manière qualitative les livrables pouvant être obtenus avec les différentes données acquises. Ce projet se termine par une étude de rendement pour chaque appareil selon deux situations de relevés (une zone étendue, supérieure à un hectare et une zone plus restreinte). The profitability of afforestation with Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L.) was studied in two 31–32-year old experiments in southern and northern Finland. The stands were established by seeding and planting, and various fertilization treatments and drainage intensities were tested. The financial performance for each plot was assessed in three steps. First, the costs occurred during the measurement time were summed up according to their present value. Then, for the rest of the rotation (i.e., from the age of 31/32 onwards) the stand management was optimized in order to maximize the net present value (MaxNPV). Finally, bare land values (BLVs) were calculated by summing up the present value of costs and the MaxNPV and converting the sum of the series into infinity. The afforestation method did not affect the mean annual increment (MAI; 9.2–9.5 m3 ha–1 a–1)in the southern experiment. In the northern experiment the afforestation method, ditch spacing and fertilization had significant effects on the MAI of the stands. The average MAI of the planted pines was 8.9 m3 ha–1 a–1, and for seeded pines it was 7.5 m3 ha–1 a–1. The BLV at an interest rate of 3% was positive for all stands in both regions. In the northern region afforestation method, ditch spacing and fertilization also had a significant effect on the BLV. When the interest rate was 5%, almost two thirds of the stands had a negative BLV in both regions.
