In spite of wide data availability and successful standardization efforts in 3D modeling, it is not a standard practice to offer large-scale topographic references to the end user in the form of 3D models. This motivates to propose automated strategies for the generation of closed 3D representations of a complete urban landscape, which at the same time account for capabilities of consumer-class devices. The campus of Dresden University of Technology served as a test case. The final appearance of the 3D model will be steered directly by the original geographic information system (GIS) data source. Such a “schematic model” displays source classes and attributes by nonphotorealistic rendering. A tested generic workflow can be presented, which programmatically integrates attributed 2D GIS entities and digital elevation model data, checks for compliancy with consistency rules and generates a slim geometric model. Only detailed GIS references can be considered to allow close-range visualization as needed in virtual walks. In delegating the geometric processing to automated workflows, playing room is gained for as well innovative as expressive texturing and, thus, design of the final 3D model. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) As the amount of cartographic representations dramatically rise, cartographers are incited to merge them into mixed cartographic representations. We identify two widespread design trends among such representations: a higher level of realism and an increasing use of imagery background. Moreover, current geovisualization applications provide interactive covisualization tools such as sliders, swipes, magnifiers, lenses or anchored windows that allow users to explore two cartographic representations simultaneously. Some related research works focus on the realism level of cartographic representations, while designing semi-realistic symbols (Jenny & Jenny 2014, Patterson 2002) or while integrating imagery data (Raposo 2014). Indeed, (Boer et al. 2013) foresee the impact of the realism level on the fitness for use of such representations. Our work aims at creating a cartographic continuum enabling users to navigate from an imagery based representation to a topographic map. An important issue of this work is to provide automatic design methods to build in-between cartographic representations. It takes up different challenges. First, we intend to preserve the readability of relevant cartographic elements in each in-between representation. Second, we aim at providing smooth transitions ensuring the continuity between consecutive representations of our continuum. Finally, we look for adapting promising computer graphics rendering methods such as texturing, shading or blending modes to our design issues. We propose elementary rendering methods to rise these design challenges. Progressive symbolization methods allow smooth transitions by using progressive transparency or procedural texturing methods, or by applying color morphing between, on the one hand, bright and artificial map colors and, and on the other hand, natural and unsaturated imagery colors. Adaptive symbolization methods provide road or label symbolizations that are locally contrasted regarding imagery background colors. The objective is to take into account the visual diversity and complexity of imagery backgrounds. Our elementary rendering methods provide symbolization specifications for each cartographic theme independently, or depending on the background layer. In order to create a consistent cartographic continuum and build complete in-between representations, these elementary methods have been combined into a global cartographic process. The calibration of the relative realism levels our elementary rendering method outputs have been guided by a user visual test in order to ensure an homogeneous level of realism for the whole representation. Our work further contributes to the formalisation of the concept of in-between cartographic representation which could be used to build other continuums (through seasonal representations or artistic styles for exemple), the proposal of cartographic rendering methods inspired by computer graphics and the conception of geovisualization tools to browse in-between representations from a topographic map to an imagery based cartographic representation. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) 3D renderings are used and abused, notably for public consultation concerning urban projects. As 3D semiotics is not clearly defined (Häberling, 2008), the impact of graphic parameters (e.g. material color or light) of such renderings on public understanding and perception is not controlled. On the contrary, in cartographic domain, good practices based on a set of visual variables have been recommended by (Bertin, 1982) in order to ensure understandable cartographic messages. The aim of our work is to use and revisit these practices to apply them on 3D renderings and thus to create 3D semiotics. In this contribution, we introduce an original generic method to assess styles of 3D renderings. The first step is to define 3D styles. We analyse graphic parameters of each geographic features composing the rendering (e.g. sidewalk, tree trunk, house roof or door). Four categories of styles are highlighted combining two pairs of characteristics, level of details and level of photorealism: detailed representation vs non-detailed representation and photorealistic representation (PR) vs non-photorealistic representation (NPR). In order to illustrate these four categories, a collection of 3D renderings, from urban projects focused on one building, has been set up. Each rendering can then be systematically described and categorized into theses categories, pointing out the graphic parameters that participate to the categories. As an example, it turns out that window transparency and absence of edging increase photorealism perception. In a second step, we want to navigate automatically between the styles belonging to these categories, for a same rendering. For that, transformations between renderings are described into elementary modifications of graphic parameters and traduced into visual variables in using the matrix proposed in (Jobst, 2008). For example, for a tested transformation between NP to NPR styles, hue, grain and value visual variables are modified. In future work, the undertaken method could be improved in extracting automatically necessary graphic parameters. In the long term, we aim to create methods to automatically change styles (3D or even 2D) according to the context of users and purposes. For that, we could apply and study other types of cartographic practices, not only based on visual variables, but concerning: identification of thematic relationships between geographic features in the rendering, rules to preserve readability of neighbour features using color, shape or style contrasts or adding thematic qualitative or quantitative informations. As for the users, our objective is to provide them tools to create 3D renderings with a specific style and relevant to their objectives.
