[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) The long-term resilience of Pyrenean forests in the face of historical anthropogenic clearing remains largely unknown. In this paper, a high-resolution (decadal to subdecadal) paleoecological study of mid-elevation Pyrenean forests is presented that encompasses the last two millennia. This long-term record was obtained after sediment coring, dating (varve counting) and pollen analysis of annually laminated (varved) sediments from Lake Montcortès, situated at 1027 m elevation, in the transition between the Mediterranean and montane forest belts. This allowed the definition of three major deforestation/recovery cycles during the Roman, Medieval and Modern times. Each DR cycle is characterized considering three different levels: overall forest trends, forest type and individual taxa. Overall, the studied forests exhibited high resilience, as they recovered almost completely after each deforestation event (bulk resilience). The critical point of no return (tipping point) beyond which forests would have irreversibly disappeared from the region was never reached, even after deforestation magnitudes above 60%. The different forest types identified (conifer, sclerophyll and deciduous) persisted over time, showing similar heterogeneous patterns with minor spatial reorganizations (mosaic resilience). Individually, the main forest taxa underwent minor variations in their relative abundances, always within the same attraction domains (community resilience). The high levels of resilience documented in these Pyrenean forests are attributed to the action of metapopulation and metacommunity processes and mechanisms in a highly dynamic patchy environment. Conservation actions should be focused on the maintenance of these spatial patterns and the associated ecological dynamics. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In recent decades, die-off events in Pinus sylvestris populations have increased. The causes of these phenomena, which are usually related to local and regional extreme hot droughts, have been extensively investigated from a physiological viewpoint. However, the consequences of die-off process in terms of demography and vegetation dynamics have been less thoroughly addressed. Here, we projected P. sylvestris plot dynamics after a die-off event, under climate change scenarios, considering also their early demographic stages (i.e., seedlings, saplings and ingrowth from the sapling to adult class), to assess the resilience of P. sylvestris populations after such events. We used Integral Projection Models (IPMs) to project future plot structure under current climate, and under RCP4.5 and RCP8.0 climate scenarios, using climatic suitability – extracted from Species Distribution Models – as a covariable in the estimations of vital rates over time. Field data feeding IPMs were obtained from two successive surveys, at the end of the die-off event (2013) and four years later (2017), undertaken on populations situated across the P. sylvestris range of distribution in Catalonia (NE Spain). Plots affected by die-off experienced a loss of large trees, which causes that basal area, tree diameter and tree density will remain lower for decades relative to unaffected plots. After the event, this situation is partially counterbalanced in affected plots by a greater increase in basal area and seedling recruitment into tree stage, thus promoting resilience. However, resilience is delayed under the climate-change scenarios with warmer and drier conditions involving additional physiological stress, due to a reduced abundance of seedlings and a smaller plot basal area. The study shows lagged effect of drought-induced die-off events on forest structure, also revealing stabilizing mechanisms, such as recruitment and tree growth release, which enhance resilience. However, these mechanisms would be jeopardized by oncoming regional warming. [Termes IGN] ville durableRésumé : (auteur) This study was undertaken to be a remedy to urban water scarcity phenomena having escalated consequences with the contemporaneous effects of climate change and over-urbanization. Hence, a broad list of mitigation strategies comprising 44 action plans under seven dimensions was assessed depending upon five constraints (i.e., cost-effectiveness, time/effort required, feasibility, primary benefit, and secondary benefits). To realize the overarching aim of this research, the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) each subjected to the fuzzy set theory were employed. In this regard, the fuzzy AHP was utilized for determining the weights of constraining criteria, while the prioritization of the strategies was performed via the fuzzy TOPSIS. The results revealed that the primary benefit is the most prevailing criterion compared to its counterparts. In addition, procuring organized land use planning and limiting new growth in urban areas was found as the most promising strategy to combat urban water scarcity phenomena. The findings further highlighted the effectiveness of conducting integrated water resource planning against climate change and fostering the use of sustainable materials domestically in not only mitigating urban water scarcity but also increasing the resiliency and sustainability of the urbanized cities. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Forests worldwide are increasingly exposed to extreme weather events. Drought deteriorates the health, structure, and functioning of forests, which can lead to reduced diversity, decreased productivity, and increased tree mortality. Therefore, it is an urgent need to assess the impact of drought on tree species. Due to differences in tree physiology, saplings and mature trees are likely to respond specifically to drought conditions. In contrast to mature trees, little is known about the response of saplings to drought. Here, we combine in-situ field measurements for saplings of deciduous tree species with remote sensing for forest canopy to assess drought damage, recovery, and sapling mortality patterns during a centennial drought (2018, 2019) and beyond (2020). We measured 2051 saplings out of 214 plots in Central Germany. Forest canopy health was assessed using 10 × 10 m resolution satellite observations for the same locations. We (1) demonstrate that forest canopy exhibits long-lasting drought-induced effects, (2) show that saplings have a remarkable capacity to recover from drought and survive a subsequent drought, (3) demonstrate that reduced sapling recovery leads to their mortality, (4) reveal that drought damage on saplings increases from pioneer to non-pioneer species, and mortality is ranking from Sorbus aucuparia > Sambucus nigra > Fraxinus excelsior, Acer campestre, Frangula alnus > Ulmus glabra > Carpinus betulus > Betula pendula, Fagus sylvatica > Acer pseudoplatanus > Quercus petraea > Corylus avellana, Crataegus spp., > Prunus avium, Quercus robur; and (5) link drought response to site conditions, indicating that species diversity and winter precipitation as relevant indicators of tree health. If periods of drought become more frequent, as expected, this could negatively impact mid-term forest recovery, alter long-term tree species assemblages and reduce biodiversity and functional resilience of forest ecosystems. We suggest that models of forest response to drought should differentiate between the forest canopy and understory and also consider species-specific responses as we found a broad spectrum of responses within the same plant functional type of deciduous tree species in terms of drought damage and recovery. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Increasing temperatures and rising atmospheric vapor pressure deficits are exposing forests around the globe to increasing drought and heat stress, demanding a shift to climate-smart forestry for increasing the stress resistance and resilience of production forests and to enhance their climate change mitigation potential. Based on measurements in paired pine and beech forests and the review of literature data, we analyse the biophysical consequences and the carbon cycle impact of large-scale Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) plantations in northern Germany in the face of a warming and aridifying climate. We quantified canopy surface albedo and surface temperature, evapotranspiration and deep seepage, carbon (C) storage in biomass and soil and annual C sequestration, and soil acidification of pine plantations in comparison to beech forests (Fagus sylvatica L.), the natural forest vegetation. We find that near-infrared (NIR, 700–3000 mn) canopy surface albedo is higher by 5.2 percentage points during summer over beech as compared to pine forest, resulting in a 9 % higher net radiation and a 0.6 K higher surface temperature of the pine canopy. Deep seepage is on average by 68 mm yr−1 smaller under pine than beech forest (66 mm yr−1 vs. 134 mm yr−1) due to the higher evapotranspiration of pine. C storage in biomass and soil is by ∼ 48 Mg C ha−1 higher in beech than pine forests, reflecting the higher productivity of beech, demonstrating an unfavorably low C sequestration potential of Scots pine plantations. We conclude that the large-scale Scots pine plantations in northern Germany (>1.7 million ha) are neither environmental-friendly nor climate smart, given their enhancement of climate-warming, low climate change mitigation potential, and negative effect on groundwater recharge. Replacing pine plantations by beech (or other hardwood) forests in northern Germany and adjacent regions is urgently needed for achieving the goals of climate-smart forestry.
