[Termes IGN] simulation hydrodynamiqueRésumé : (auteur) The modelling errors of marine geoid models may reach up to a few decimetres in the shorter wavelength spectrum due to gravity data void areas and/or inaccurate data. Various data acquisition methods can provide sea surface heights more accurately. Similarly, hydrodynamic model data in conjunction with tide gauge readings allow the derivation of reliable dynamic topography. Geometrical marine geoid heights, independent of the usual gravity-based marine geoid models, can be obtained by removing the estimated dynamic topography from sea surface height measurements. This study exploits such geometry information to refine marine geoid models. A data assimilation approach was developed that iteratively combines sea surface height and dynamic topography datasets with an initial gravimetric geoid model. A case study is presented using sea surface heights from shipborne GNSS campaigns and an airborne laser scanning survey for refining the EIGEN-6C4 global geopotential model. Comparisons with a high-resolution regional marine geoid model reveal that the initial discrepancies of up to around two decimetres reduce to sub-decimetre within the study area. It is concluded that the developed iterative data assimilation approach can significantly improve the accuracy of marine geoid models, especially in regions where gravity data are of poor quality or unavailable. [Termes IGN] surcharge océaniqueRésumé : (auteur) We employ the barotropic, data-unconstrained ocean tide model TiME to derive an atlas for degree-3 tidal constituents including monthly to terdiurnal tidal species. The model is optimized with respect to the tide gauge data set TICON-td that is extended to include the respective tidal constituents of diurnal and higher frequencies. The tide gauge validation shows a root-mean-square (RMS) deviation of 0.9–1.3 mm for the individual species. We further model the load tide-induced gravimetric signals by two means (1) a global load Love number approach and (2) evaluating Greens-integrals at 16 selected locations of superconducting gravimeters. The RMS deviation between the amplitudes derived using both methods is below 0.5 nGal (1 nGal =0.01nms2) when excluding near-coastal gravimeters. Utilizing ETERNA-x, a recently upgraded and reworked tidal analysis software, we additionally derive degree-3 gravimetric tidal constituents for these stations, based on a hypothesis-free wave grouping approach. We demonstrate that this analysis is feasible, yielding amplitude predictions of only a few 10 nGal, and that it agrees with the modeled constituents on a level of 63–80% of the mean signal amplitude. Larger deviations are only found for lowest amplitude signals, near-coastal stations, or shorter and noisier data sets. To date, the development of such models has been undertaken in areas where long-term sea level measurements exist and there are resources for extensive offshore bathymetric and Global Navigation Satellite Systems surveys. Many small island developing states and other resource constrained territories host vulnerable coastal zones and would benefit from such models, however, financial constraints and data sparsity make it difficult. This article describes the establishment of a vertical separation model using an amalgamation of long- and short-term sea level measurements with hydrodynamic modeling. With existing vertical separations at only two coastal points for comparison, the model was designed to include a tidal prediction element which allowed for validation against sparse independently observed sea levels. Considering that unmodeled influences on sea levels in the study area can exceed 0.2 m at times, the method was tested against independently observed sea levels and can be considered successful with variances in the range of 1.3–4.5% of the average tidal range for the study area. This research provides the means of addressing a significant need in developing territories where long-term sea level records are unavailable and resource deficiencies exist. Nevertheless, their physical and biogeochemical processes have been long influenced by anthropogenic pressures. A complete and regular monitoring of reservoir water quality in the context of current climate change, eutrophication and higher water demand, has become crucial for optimal management strategies. Recent progress in the satellite remote sensing field made it possible to enhance data acquisition on a synoptic scale and to perform retrospective studies. Satellite data can complement measurements however over a limited depth of the water column. In addition, three-dimensional (3D) numerical models which integrate physical, chemical and biological processes can fill temporal gaps and extend the information into the vertical domain.In this context, this PhD thesis focuses on the combined use of techniques and data derived from field monitoring, satellite remote sensing and 3D modeling. The overreaching objective of this work is to propose a combined approach for surveying the water quality of medium-sized reservoirs (~ 14 km2).The study site is Karaoun Reservoir, Lebanon (semi-arid climate, surface 12 km2, capacity 110 hm3). It mainly serves for hydropower however with possibly a future drinking water production. It is eutrophic and has been experiencing regular events of toxic cyanobacterial blooms. The following methodological approach was adopted:i) In situ measurements were regularly collected from spring to fall for the calibration and the validation of remote sensing algorithms and of the model.ii) In order to calibrate and validate remote sensing algorithms, Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 imagery were atmospherically corrected using a single-channel algorithm and the 6SV code respectively.a. Four algorithms from literature for deriving surface temperature were validated using Landsat 8 thermal data.b. A previously calibrated and validated Sentinel-2 algorithm was applied to retrieve chlorophyll-a concentrations.c. An empirical algorithm was calibrated and validated in order to retrieve transparency from Sentinel-2 data.iii) In order to conduct a retrospective analysis of surface temperature, the validated single channel algorithm was applied to a series of Landsat images from 1984 to 2018.iv) In order to reproduce the hydrodynamics and ecological processes, including cyanobacterial biomass in space and time, the Delft3D model was configured, calibrated and validated for summer and fall. The spatial distribution of surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentrations from the satellite and the model were investigated.The results of this study revealed that, among the four tested algorithms, the single channel algorithm dependent on atmospheric water vapor content and lake water emissivity yielded the best estimations of surface temperature. Using this validated algorithm, the retrospective analysis of surface temperature did not reveal any warming trend over the 1984-2018 period at the study site. Compared to in situ profiles, the Delft3D model represented well the evolution of the water level fluctuations, and the time and vertical distribution of temperature and phytoplankton biomass. [Termes IGN] simulation hydrodynamiqueRésumé : (auteur) An essential role of the FAMOS international cooperation project is to obtain new marine gravity observations over the Baltic Sea for improving gravimetric geoid modelling. To achieve targeted 5 cm modelling accuracy, it is important to acquire new gravimetric data, as the existing data over some regions are inaccurate and sparse. As the accuracy of contemporary geoid models over marine areas remains unknown, it is important to evaluate geoid modelling outcome by independent data. Thus, this study presents results of a shipborne marine gravity and GNSS campaign for validation of existing geoid models conducted in the eastern section of the Baltic Sea. Challenging aspects for utilizing shipborne GNSS profiles tend to be with quantifying vessel’s attitude, processing of noise in the data and referencing to the required datum. Consequently, the novelty of this study is in the development of methodology that considers the above-mentioned challenges. In addition, tide gauge records in conjunction with an operational hydrodynamic model are used to identify offshore sea level dynamics during the marine measurements. The results show improvements in geoid modelling due to new marine gravimetric data. It is concluded that the marine GNSS profiles can potentially provide complementary constraints in problematic geoid modelling areas.
