[Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (Auteur) The GeoWeb brings up more and more new ways of mapping the world that put the traditional distance-based god's eye view of the map on the edge. Thereby the need for a changed perspective on mapping from an object resulting of a process to being a composition of practiced mapping functionalities becomes ever more obvious in order to explain how they do work in the world. This article gives a short overview about the changing landscape of mapping from the author's point of view. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) Significant changes in the wealth, variety and level of graphic form of city maps are noticeable in recent years, particularly those from Central and Eastern European countries. This is a consequence of the political and economic transformation, resulting in the abolition of censorship and introduction of the free market. Such transformations have also brought significant changes to the city maps’ content, notably, features whose representation had been forbidden could finally be represented. City maps published in Western Europe have evolved as well during the aforementioned period due to higher political and economic stability. The paper compares city maps content of 21 European countries. Differences in the cartographic representation of Western and Central and Eastern European cities are distinct. The influence of a S oviet cartographic style is easily visible in post-communist countries. This is expressed, among other things, by the presentation of detailed content and the considerable amount of point symbols. By contrast, the content demonstrated in Western European city maps is narrower. Taking into account importance of city maps among other cartographic products it seems surprising, that there are no analyses, which could help in finding answers to the following questions: which factors have considerable influence on differentiating the content of the European city maps? Which objects and characteristics are common for each city maps? Do city maps reflect character of the presented city, or there are no important regional differences? [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) To what extent can similarity and difference in the cartographic style of state topographic maps be explained within the context of the cartographic language paradigm? This paper explores the suitability of this approach as a hermeneutic for stylistic diversity, the persistence of nationally-specific conventions and problems of symbol standardisation. After reviewing earlier treatments of map language as analogy and metaphor in cartographic theory, we consider the construction of cartographic meaning and its role within a semiological system and suggest how variations in denotation and connotation allow a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of state topographic map symbologies. In treating topographic cartography as a natural visual language for communicating place, a new paradigm is proposed through which problems of international collaboration concerning the portrayal of transnational landscapes (especially at larger map scales) may be approached and potentially overcome. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) The paper outlines the concept of cartographic style that is applicable to practically every type of maps. The structure of the style is rather complex and can be infuenced by geographic space, time and culture. The purpose of cartographic stylistics is to assure that all the elements of visualization consistently support an appropriate perception of map information by the target group. Three largely independent criteria, that can be separately applied to diferent map components on the one hand and combine composition and other aspects into one system on the other, are specifed as decorativeness, expressiveness and originality. Four major groups of styles have been defined by a general degree of the graphic enhancement of visualised data: ‘minimal’, ‘standard’, conventional and conspicuous. Within conventional and conspicuous stylistic groups, more concrete style types such as laconic, constructive, expressive, lightsome, aggressive, soft, antique, luscious, extravagant and artistic are defined.
