[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Key message: Understory plant communities are essential for the recruitment of trees making up future forests. Independent of plant diversity, the understory across different forest ecosystems shows considerable physiological acclimation and structural stability towards drought events, which are expected to occur more frequently in future.
Context: Understory plant communities are essential for the recruitment of trees making up the future forest. It is so far poorly understood how climate change will affect understory in beech and conifer forests managed at different intensity levels.
Aims: We hypothesized that drought would affect transpiration and carbon isotope discrimination but not species richness and diversity. Moreover, we assumed that forest management intensity will modify the responses to drought of the understory community.
Methods: We set up roofs in forests with a gradient of management intensities (unmanaged beech—managed beech—intensively managed conifer forests) in three regions across Germany. A drought event close to the 2003 drought was imposed in two consecutive years.
Results: After 2 years, the realized precipitation reduction was between 27% and 34%. The averaged water content in the top 20 cm of the soil under the roof was reduced by 2% to 8% compared with the control. In the 1st year, leaf level transpiration was reduced for different functional groups, which scaled to community transpiration modified by additional effects of drought on functional group leaf area. Acclimation effects in most functional groups were observed in the 2nd year.
Conclusion: Forest understory shows high plasticity at the leaf and community level, and high structural stability to changing climate conditions with drought events.Numéro de notice : A2018-319 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-017-0681-7 Date de publication en ligne : 22/12/2017 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-017-0681-7 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=90452

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Phenology is a sensitive and critical feature of vegetation and is a good indicator for climate change studies. The global inventory modelling and mapping studies (GIMMS) normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) has been the most widely used data source for monitoring of the vegetation dynamics over large geographical areas in the past two decades. With the release of the third version of the NDVI (GIMMS NDVI3g) recently, it is important to compare the NDVI3g data with those of the previous version (NDVIg) to link existing studies with future applications of the NDVI3g in monitoring vegetation phenology. In this study, the three most popular satellite start of vegetation growing season (SOS) extraction methods were used, and the differences between SOSg and SOS3g arising from the methods were explored. The amplitude and the peak values of the NDVI3g are higher than those of the NDVIg curve, which indicated that the SOS derived from the NDVIg (SOSg) was significantly later than that derived from the NDVI3g (SOS3g) based on all the methods, for the whole northern hemisphere. In addition, SOSg and SOS3g both showed an advancing trend during 1982–2006, but that trend was more significant with SOSg than with SOS3g in the results from all three methods. In summary, the difference between SOSg and SOS3g (in the multi-year mean SOS, SOS change slope and the turning point in the time series) varied among the methods and was partly related to latitude. For the multi-year mean SOS, the difference increased with latitude intervals in the low latitudes (0–30°N) and decreased in the mid- and high-latitude intervals. The GIMMS NDVI3g data-sets seemed more sensitive than the GIMMS NDVIg in detecting information about the ground, and the SOS3g data were better correlated both with the in situ observations and the SOS derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer NDVI. For the northern hemisphere, previous satellite measures (SOS derived from GIMMS NDVIg) may have overestimated the advancing trend of the SOS by an average of 0.032 d yr–1. [Termes IGN] surveillance de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) Land cover change monitoring is an important task from the perspective of regional resource monitoring, disaster management, land development, and environmental planning. In this paper, we analyze imagery data from remote sensing satellites to detect forest cover changes over a period of 29 years (1987-2015). Since the original data are severely incomplete and contaminated with artifacts, we first devise a spatiotemporal inpainting mechanism to recover the missing surface reflectance information. The spatial filling process makes use of the available data of the nearby temporal instances followed by a sparse encoding-based reconstruction. We formulate the change detection task as a region classification problem. We build a multiresolution profile (MRP) of the target area and generate a candidate set of bounding-box proposals that enclose potential change regions. In contrast to existing methods that use handcrafted features, we automatically learn region representations using a deep neural network in a data-driven fashion. Based on these highly discriminative representations, we determine forest changes and predict their onset and offset timings by labeling the candidate set of proposals. Our approach achieves the state-of-the-art average patch classification rate of 91.6% (an improvement of ~16%) and the mean onset/offset prediction error of 4.9 months (an error reduction of five months) compared with a strong baseline. We also qualitatively analyze the detected changes in the unlabeled image regions, which demonstrate that the proposed forest change detection approach is scalable to new regions.
