[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (Auteur) Study of the detailed structure and ecological functioning of urban and peri-urban systems is intensifying due to increasing concentration of the human population into urban centers. Much of this increase is expected to occur in semiarid to arid cites. Data from new high spatial, temporal, and spectral resolution satellite-based sensors promise to increase our understanding of global urban ecological and climatic processes and improve city and land planning capabilities. Two of these sensors, the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), provide an opportunity to compare urban spatial structure (distribution and configuration of discrete land cover/land use classes on the landscape) with contemporaneous measurements of surface biophysical composition at a variety of spatial and temporal scales. Such combined measurements are useful for modeling changes to urban climate, hydrology, and biogeochemical cycles caused by modification of the landscape. We compare gridded landscape metrics derived from expert systern land cover classification of ASTER to corresponding MODIS NDVI data at scales of 250 m/pixel, 500 m/pixel, and 1 km/pixel in order to determine which of these scales is optimal for monitoring of urban biophysical processes and landscape structure change. Weak positive and negative correlations between NDVI and landscape structure were observed at all three spatial scales for the metrics Class Area, Mean Patch Size, Edge Density, and Interspersion/Juxtaposition Index. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Environmental agencies frequently require tools for quick assessments of areas affected by large fires. Remote sensing techniques have been reported as efficient tools to evaluate the effects of fire. However, there exist few quantitative comparisons about the performance of the diverse methods. This study quantitatively evaluated the accuracy of five different techniques, a field survey and four satellite-based techniques, in order to quickly classify a large forest fire that occurred in 1998 in Solsonès (north-east Spain) by means of an IRS LISS-3 image. Three pure classes were determined: burned area, unburned vegetation, and bare soil; along with a non-pure class that we called mixed area. These selected techniques were included into a tree classifier to investigate their partial contribution to the final classification. The most accurate methods when focusing on pure classes were those directly related to the spectral characteristics of the pixel: Reflectance Data and Spectral Unmixing (82% of overall accuracy), versus the poorer performances of Vegetation Indices (70%), Textural measures (72%) and the field survey (68.6%). Since no image processing technique was applied to the Raw Reflectance Data, it can be considered the most cost-effective method, and the tree classifier reinforces its importance. The results of this study reveal that time consuming and expensive methods are not necessarily the most accurate, especially when potentially easily distinguishable classes are involved. [Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) A probalistic method has been developed that distinguishes oil spills from other similar sea surface features in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. It considers both the radiometric and geometric characteristics of the areas being tested. In order to minimize the operator intervention, it adopts automatic selection criteria to extract the potentially polluted areas from the images. The method has an a priori percentage of correct classification higher than 90% on the training dataset ; the performance is confirmed on a different dataset of verified slicks. Some analysis have been conducted using images with different radiometric and geometric resolutions to test its suitability with SAR images different from European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellite ones. The system and its ability to detect and classify oil and non-oil surface features are described. Starting from a set of verified oil spills detected offshore and over coastline, the ability of SAR to reveal oil spills is tested by analysing wind intensity, deduced from the images itself, and the distance from the coast. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The paradigm of land degradation/land ressource/land administration relationships is examined from a synthesis of the classical field survey, airborne and spaceborne low resolution techniques concerning an example of case study in the zone of Sahel. How can the new generation of data inputs, especially from the high resolution sensors, bring more pertinent information outputs that may involve other principles and methods of participatory environmental protection planning for the most vulnerable social groups ? In this respect some possible applications of low-cost micro technology are explored. A theoretical and operational framework for land management information systems is used.
