[Termes IGN] surveillance écologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The availability of hyperspectral data is going to provide new insights for environmental studies. In this study, hyperspectral data were collected for 10 land cover types with in situ measurement and leaves of 25 subtropical tree species in laboratory measurement within the 400 900 rim spectral regions in 689 bands. These bands were subsequently filtered to 138 bands for data analysis. Principal components analysis was applied to explore the inherent data dimensions. It was found that unlike most broadband sensors from which only two dimensions, brightness and greenness, could be extracted, hyperspectral data provided additional dimensions particularly along the red edge that could help identify different land covers as well as tree species. The results of tree identification using principal components analysis were comparable to those using the raw spectral bands. Hyperspectral data analysis should be a valuable tool for environmental monitoring in the tropical and subtropical environment where a large variety of flora and habitats is found. [Termes IGN] système d'information géographiqueRésumé : (Auteur) Many studies have used remote sensing to detect forest conversion activities in the Amazon for the purposes of directing policy or generating data for environmental modeling. However, this technology has yet to be applied towards forest law enforcement in the region. In this study we design a violation detection system for Areas of Permanent Preservation using Landsat TM data and GIS, and test it in a logging town in the Eastern Amazon. Our detection methodology generates a simple forest cover map using unsupervised classification techniques, as well as river maps derived directly from remotely sensed data. Data produced through this detection system include a forest cover map, waterway map, map of Areas of Permanent Preservation, and violation map. We include a discussion of the advantages and limitations of each of these data products for law enforcement purposes in the region. Violations were detected in 60% of all Areas of Permanent Preservation in pastures and other cleared properties, showing extremely low law abidance once deforestation occurs. Overall, violation detection resulted in accuracy levels of 88.6%, illustrating the viability of efficiently monitoring land cover for law enforcement purposes in the Amazon. [Termes IGN] turbidité océaniqueRésumé : (Auteur) Environmental pollution is among the most common problems of different nations as a global problem. Especially, water pollution is a continuous threat to surface water resources and transportation routes in the world. Istanbul Straight (Bosphorus) is a model for such a situation due to water passage from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. In fact, pollution sources of the Bosphorus originate from the wastage of many nations that have costal areas along the Black Sea and Danube River in addition to the population as well as industrial pollutants from the city itself. Pollution surface measurements are carried out concerning total suspended solids JSS), humic materials (HM), chemical oxygen demand (COD), poliaromatik hydrocarbons (PAH) and hydrodynamic conditions of water. On the other hand, digital multispectral Landsat-5 satellite data were recorded and co-registered for a portion of the Bosphorus. Relationships are sought between the water quality parameters and the reflectance values by the use of regression analysis. Although such an analysis has been carried out in the past during 1986 since then there are signs of significant water pollution increment in the Bosphorus. Therefore, this paper aims at the deduction of the most recent data analysis from 1997 in comparisons with earlier studies so as to make temporal decisions in addition to the spatial features. Adaptive parameter estimation in the regression analyses provides efficient computation in an economic manner. These observed reflectance values show a strong relationship with the water quality observation. The necessary values are provided in single pixel values for each band at the station point in the Bosphorus. Satellite data provide a useful index of TSS, HM and PAH. As the reflectance (in the turbidity area) in the longer red and near IR increases faster than the reflectance in shorter blue and green wavelengths, it can be seen that turbidity levels are positively related to reflectance.
