[Termes IGN] surveillance météorologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The ENVISAT mission with a suite of high performance sensors offers some opportunities for mapping snow cover at regional and catchment scales. The spatial resolution of the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer Instrument (MERIS) data and the spectral characteristics of the Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR) data are suitable for these purposes. A new approach has been developed for the generation of snow cover products in Alpine regions, based on the combined use of ENVISAT optical data and topographic information. The Alpine region is selected as a test area to demonstrate the potential and the limitations of the novel approach. In particular, attention is focused on three regions of northern Italy (Valle d'Aosta, Piemonte, Lombardia). The first results obtained by the application of this new method to Earth Observation data will be presented and analysed. [Termes IGN] surveillance météorologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) With the launch of the NOAA-15 satellite in May 1998, a new generation of passive microwave sounders was initiated. The Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit (AMSU), with 20 channels spanning the frequency range from 23-183 GHz, offers enhanced temperature and moisture sounding capability well beyond its predecessor, the Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU). In addition, by utilizing a number of window channels on the AMSU, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) expanded the capability of the AMSU beyond the original purpose and developed a new suite of products that tare generated through the Microwave Surface and Precipitation Products System (MSPPS). This includes precipitation rate, total precipitable water, land surface emissivity, and snow cover. Details on the current status of the retrieval algorithms (as of September 2004) are presented. These products are complimentary to similar products obtained from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSMI) and the Earth Observing Aqua Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E). Due to the close orbital equatorial crossing time between NOAA-16 and the Aqua satellites, comparisons between several of the MSPPS products are made with AMSR-E. Finally, several application examples are presented that demonstrate their importance to weather forecasting and analysis, and climate monitoring. [Termes IGN] surveillance météorologiqueRésumé : (Auteur) The aim of this work is to show an automatic method of cloud classification for direct application in civil aviation. We start from the premise of an acceptable trade-off between calculation speed and accuracy in the output data. For this reason, visible and infrared channels of the Meteosat satellite were used alongside data provided by the A/TOVS (Advanced/Tiros-N Operational Vertical Sounder) probe onboard NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) polar satellites. A historical database of mean temperatures at ground level was also used. The analysis of different significant synoptic and mesoscale situations highlighted the efficacy of this method in the representation of the different cloud structures that normally appear in these situations. Considering the results of the study and given its speed and accuracy, it can be concluded that the method is appropriate for monitoring cloud systems in real time. [Termes IGN] ThaïlandeRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this study is to estimate the residual surface soil moisture of rice fields after harvesting, in Northeast Thailand, using Cband SAR images. Such information is use 1 to determine possibilities of cultivating additional shortcycle crops after the harvesting of the main rice crop. To accomplish this objective this study exploits three Cband SAR images acquired over the test area along with simultaneous ground measurements collected in support of analysis of the SAR images. The main parameters measured on the ground were: the volumetric moisture content of the soil using time domain reflectrometry (TDR), the surface roughness, using profile data, and residue cover. Other field environmental factors that might affect radar backscattering, including the topography of rice terraces (elevation, slope, and aspect), bund height between rice fields, soil types, and density of sparse tree stands were also acquired and registered to the image data. Before the analysis, the SAR images were calibrated, registered, and then filtered using multitemporal and spatial filters to reduce variability of the radar backscattering coefficient due to speckle. The measured soil moisture values were then correlated with the radar backscattering coefficients of the experimental plots and the results interpreted in terms of the main environmental factors. Varying residue cover and field aspect angles were found to significantly affect the relationship between radar backscatter and soil moisture content and therefore had to be taken into account before inverting the image data into soil moisture maps. Overall it was found that two soil moisture classes could reliably be separated using the SAR images, and that soil moisture maps could be obtained through a simple inversion technique based on applying a threshold to the SAR images. Analyses of these resulting moisture maps indicate that SAR data is useful to monitor and map surface soil moisture in rice fields after harvest.
