Stable nighttime light (NTL) data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS) provides a unique proxy of human settlement and activity, which has been used in the mapping and analysis of urban areas and urbanization dynamics. However, blooming and saturation effects of DMSP/OLS NTL data are two unresolved problems in regional urban area mapping and analysis. This study proposed a new urban index termed the Temperature and Vegetation Adjusted NTL Urban Index (TVANUI). It is intended to reduce blooming and saturation effects and to enhance urban features by combining DMSP/OLS NTL data with Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and land surface temperature (LST) data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer onboard the Terra satellite. The proposed index was evaluated in two study areas by comparison with established urban indices. The results demonstrated the proposed TVANUI was effective in enhancing the variation of DMSP/OLS light in urban areas and in reducing blooming and saturation effects, showing better performance than three established urban indices. The TVANUI also significantly outperformed the established urban indices in urban area mapping using both the global-fixed threshold and the local-optimal threshold methods. Thus, the proposed TVANUI provides a useful variable for urban area mapping and analysis on regional scale, as well as for urbanization dynamics using time-series DMSP/OLS and related satellite data. [Termes IGN] température de l'airRésumé : (Auteur) Bridge displacement monitoring is one of the key components of bridge structural health monitoring. Traditional methods, usually based on limited sets of sensors mounted on a given bridge, collect point-like deformation information and have the disadvantage of providing incomplete displacement information. In this paper, a Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) approach is used to monitor the displacements of the Nanjing Dashengguan Yangtze River high-speed railway bridge. Twenty-nine (29) European Space Agency Sentinel-1A images, acquired from April 25, 2015 to August 5, 2016, were used in the PSI analysis. A total of 1828 measurement points were selected on the bridge. The results show a maximum longitudinal displacement of about 150 mm on each side of the bridge. The measured displacements showed a strong correlation with the environmental temperature at the time the images used were acquired, indicating that they were due to thermal expansion of the bridge. At each pier, a regression model based on the PSI-measured displacements was compared with a model based on in-situ measurements. The good agreement of these models demonstrates the capability of the PSI technique to monitor long-span railway bridge displacements. By comparing the modelled displacements and dozens of PSI measurements, we show how the performance of movable bearings can be evaluated. The high density of the PSI measurement points is advantageous for the health monitoring of the entire bridge Numéro de notice : A2017-335 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : POSITIONNEMENT Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2017.03.016 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.isprsjprs.2017.03.016 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=85492

[Termes IGN] température de l'airRésumé : (Auteur) The infrared atmospheric sounding interferometer (IASI) is flying on board of the Metop satellite series, which is part of the EUMETSAT Polar System. Products obtained from IASI data represent a significant improvement in the accuracy and quality of the measurements used for meteorological models. Notably, the IASI collects rich spectral information to derive temperature and moisture profiles, among other relevant trace gases, essential for atmospheric forecasts and for the understanding of weather. Here, we investigate the impact of near-lossless and lossy compression on IASI L1C data when statistical retrieval algorithms are later applied. We search for those compression ratios that yield a positive impact on the accuracy of the statistical retrievals. The compression techniques help reduce certain amount of noise on the original data and, at the same time, incorporate spatial-spectral feature relations in an indirect way without increasing the computational complexity. We observed that compressing images, at relatively low bit rates, improves results in predicting temperature and dew point temperature, and we advocate that some amount of compression prior to model inversion is beneficial. This research can benefit the development of current and upcoming retrieval chains in infrared sounding and hyperspectral sensors. [Termes IGN] teneur en eau de la végétationRésumé : (Auteur) The dielectric property of vegetation has a considerable effect on the characteristics of the microwave radiation of vegetation. In frozen environments, when the temperature is colder than normal, changes such as increased soluble sugar and decreased moisture content (MC) can occur in the vegetation. The dielectric property of vegetation, which is almost entirely controlled by its free and bound water content, will also change. To characterize the dielectric behavior of vegetation in frozen regions, a sensitive experiment was conducted on holly leaves with a high-performance coaxial probe over a frequency range from 0.5 to 40 GHz and a temperature range from 0°C to -20°C. Based on the measurements and the physical properties of the constituent substances of vegetation, a semiempirical dielectric model for holly leaves in low temperature environments was developed. In this model, a decrease in MC, which causes a reduction in the complex permittivity, was described as an increase in the ice content. The complex permittivity of bound water was measured using a saturated sucrose solution at -6.5°C. The research will provide a reference for the dielectric property study of the vegetation in frozen environments.
