[Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (Auteur) Automatic registration of multisensor data, for example, imagery and Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR), is a basic step in data fusion in the field of geospatial information processing. Mutual information (MI) has recently attracted research attention as a statistical similarity measure for intensity-based registration of multisensor images in the related fields of computer vision and remote sensing. Since MI-based registration methods rely on joint probability density functions (pdfs) for the data sets, errors in pdf estimation can affect the MI value, causing registration failure due to the presence of nonmonotonic surfaces of similarity measure. The quality of the estimated pdf is highly dependent upon both the bin size and the smoothing technique used in the pdf estimation procedure. The lack of a general approach to assign an appropriate bin size value for the pdf of multisensor data reduces both the level of automation and the robustness of the registration. In this paper, a novel bin size selection approach is proposed to improve registration reliability. The proposed method determines the best (uniform or variable) bin size for the pdf estimation via an analysis of the relationship between the similarity measure values of the data and the adopted geometric transformation. This highlights the role of the component of MI sensitive to the transformation, rather than the MI component that is unrelated to the transformation, such as noise. The performance of the proposed method for the registration of aerial imagery to LiDAR point clouds is investigated, and experimental results are compared with those achieved through a feature-based registration method. [Termes IGN] visualisationRésumé : (auteur) A new method for dealing with systematic effects in laser scanning and visualizing them by confidence regions is derived. The standard deviations of the systematic effects are obtained by repeatedly measuring three-dimensional coordinates by the laser scanner. In addition, autocovariance and cross-covariance functions are computed by the repeated measurements and give the correlations of the systematic effects. The normal distribution for the measurements and the multivariate uniform distribution for the systematic effects are applied to generate random variates for the measurements and random variates for the measurements plus systematic effects. Monte Carlo estimates of the expectations and the covariance matrix of the measurements with systematic effects are computed. The densities for the confidence ellipsoid for the measurements and the confidence region for the measurements with systematic effects are obtained by relative frequencies. They only depend on the size of the rectangular volume elements for which the densities are determined. The problem of sorting the densities is solved by sorting distances together with the densities. This allows a visualization of the confidence ellipsoid for the measurements and the confidence region for the measurements with systematic effects. [Termes IGN] théorie de Dempster-ShaferRésumé : (auteur) In this paper, we propose a generic framework for watertight mesh generation with uncertainties that provides a confidence measure on each reconstructed mesh triangle. Its input is a set of vision-based or Lidar-based 3D measurements which are converted to a set of mass functions that characterize the level of confidence on the occupancy of the scene as occupied, empty or unknown based on Dempster-Shafer Theory. The output is a multi-label segmentation of the ambient 3D space expressing the confidence for each resulting volume element to be occupied or empty. While existing methods either sacrifice watertightness (local methods) or need to introduce a smoothness prior (global methods), we derive a per-triangle confidence measure that is able to gradually characterize when the resulting surface patches are certain due to dense and coherent measurements and when these patches are more uncertain and are mainly present to ensure smoothness and/or watertightness. The surface mesh reconstruction is formulated as a global energy minimization problem efficiently optimized with the α-expansion algorithm. We claim that the resulting confidence measure is a good estimate of the local lack of sufficiently dense and coherent input measurements, which would be a valuable input for the next-best-view scheduling of a complementary acquisition.
Beside the new formulation, the proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art results on surface reconstruction benchmark. It is robust to noise, manages high scale disparity and produces a watertight surface with a small Hausdorff distance in uncertainty area thanks to the multi-label formulation. By simply thresholding the result, the method shows a good reconstruction quality compared to local algorithms on high density data. This is demonstrated on a large scale reconstruction combining real-world datasets from airborne and terrestrial Lidar and on an indoor scene reconstructed from images.

The purpose of this study was to use a Bayesian network-based method to allow the alleviation of the ill-posed inverse problem. This was achieved by introducing the correlations between the model free parameters into their prior joint probability distribution (PJPD), allowing the reduction of the probabilities of unrealistic combinations. Three sampling strategies intended to design three types of PJPDs that considered different correlations (represented by a correlation matrix) were presented. They were multivariate uniform distribution composed by independent free parameters, multivariate uniform distribution based on a simple correlation matrix, and multivariate Gaussian distribution based on a complicated correlation matrix, respectively. A case study of the presented method to retrieve leaf area index (LAI) and canopy water content (CWC) using the PROSAIL_5B (PROSPECT-5 + 4SAIL) model from Landsat 8 products was implemented. Results indicate that the presented method greatly improves the precision level of target parameters, with the coefficient of determination R2 of 0.69, 0.77, and 0.82 and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.55, 0.51, and 0.44 m2 · m-2 for LAI and R2 = 0.68, 0.78, and 0.84 and RMSE = 230, 198, and 166 g · m-2 for CWC, respectively. Hence, the ill-posed inverse problem can be alleviated by the presented method, which can be widely applied for vegetation parameters retrieval. [Termes IGN] théorie de Dempster-ShaferMots-clés libres : Occupancy grids Point-to-triangle distance Résumé : (auteur) Mobile laser scanning (MLS) has become a popular technique for road inventory, building modelling, infrastructure management, mobility assessment, etc. Meanwhile, due to the high mobility of MLS systems, it is easy to revisit interested areas. However, change detection using MLS data of street environment has seldom been studied. In this paper, an approach that combines occupancy grids and a distance-based method for change detection from MLS point clouds is proposed. Unlike conventional occupancy grids, our occupancy-based method models space based on scanning rays and local point distributions in 3D without voxelization. A local cylindrical reference frame is presented for the interpolation of occupancy between rays according to the scanning geometry. The Dempster–Shafer theory (DST) is utilized for both intra-data evidence fusion and inter-data consistency assessment. Occupancy of reference point cloud is fused at the location of target points and then the consistency is evaluated directly on the points. A point-to-triangle (PTT) distance-based method is combined to improve the occupancy-based method. Because it is robust to penetrable objects, e.g. vegetation, which cause self-conflicts when modelling occupancy. The combined method tackles irregular point density and occlusion problems, also eliminates false detections on penetrable objects.
