[Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (auteur) In this paper, we propose a framework referred to as “geodetic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography” that fuses the SAR imaging geodesy and tomographic SAR inversion (TomoSAR) approaches to obtain absolute 3-D positions of a large amount of natural scatterers. The methodology is applied on four very high resolution TerraSAR-X spotlight image stacks acquired over the city of Berlin. Since all the TomoSAR estimates are relative to the same reference point object whose absolute 3-D positions are retrieved by means of stereo SAR, the point clouds reconstructed using data acquired from different viewing angles can be geodetically fused. To assess the accuracy of the position estimates, the resulting absolute shadow-free 3-D TomoSAR point clouds are compared with a digital surface model obtained by airborne LiDAR. It is demonstrated that an absolute positioning accuracy of around 20 cm and a meter-order relative positioning accuracy can be achieved by the proposed framework using TerraSAR-X data. [Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (Auteur) Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography has been strongly developed in the last years for the analysis at fine scale of data acquired by high-resolution interferometric SAR sensors as a technique alternative to classical persistent scatterer interferometry and able to resolve also multiple scatterers. SqueeSAR is a recently proposed solution which, in the context of SAR interferometry at the coarse scale analysis stage, allows taking advantage of the multilook operation to filter interferometric stacks by extracting, pixel by pixel, equivalent scattering mechanisms from the set of all available interferometric measurement collected in the data covariance matrix. In this paper, we investigate the possibilities to extend SqueeSAR by allowing the identification of multiple scattering mechanisms from the analysis of the covariance matrix. In particular, we present a new approach, named “Component extrAction and sElection SAR” algorithm, that allows taking advantage of the principal component analysis to filter interferograms relevant to the decorrelating scatterer, i.e., scatterers that may exhibit coherence losses depending on the spatial and temporal baseline distributions, and to detect and separate scattering mechanisms possibly interfering in the same pixel due to layover directly at the interferogram generation stage. The proposed module allows providing options useful for classical interferometric processing to monitor ground deformations at lower resolution (coarse scale), as well as for possibly aiding the data calibration preliminary for the subsequent full-resolution interferometric/tomographic (fine scale) analysis. Results achieved by processing high-resolution Cosmo-SkyMed data, characterized by the favorable features of a large baseline span, are presented to explain the advantages and validate this new interferometric processing solution. [Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (Auteur) The objective of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the capabilities of the BIOMASS tomography concerning the retrieval of forest biomass and height in tropical areas. The analysis presented in this paper is carried out on airborne data acquired by Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA) over the site of Paracou, French Guiana, during the European Space Agency campaign TropiSAR. This high-resolution data set (125-MHz bandwidth) was reprocessed in order to generate a new data stack consistent with BIOMASS as for the bandwidth (6 MHz) and the azimuth resolution (about 12 m). To do this, two different processing approaches have been considered. One approach consisted of degrading the resolution of the airborne data through the linear filtering of raw data, followed by standard SAR processing. The other approach consisted of recovering the 3-D distribution of the scatterers at a high resolution, which was then reprojected onto the BIOMASS geometry. The latter procedure allows us to obtain a data stack that is the most realistic emulation of BIOMASS imaging capabilities. In both approaches, neither ionospheric disturbances nor temporal decorrelation has been considered. The connection to the forest biomass has been examined in both cases by investigating the correlation between the backscatter at different forest heights and the above-ground biomass (AGB) values from in situ data. As expected, the reduction of the system bandwidth to 6 MHz resulted in significant vertical resolution losses compared with the original airborne data. Nevertheless, it was possible to retrieve the forest height to within an accuracy of better than 4 m, whereas the backscattered power at the volume height (30 m above the ground) exhibited a correlation higher than 0.8 with the in situ data and no bias phenomena over the AGB values ranging from 250 to 450 t/ha. [Termes IGN] tomographie radarRésumé : (auteur) The three-dimensional (3-D) structure of forests, especially the vertical structure, is an important parameter of forest ecosystem modeling for monitoring ecological change. Synthetic aperture radar tomography (TomoSAR) provides scene reflectivity estimation of vegetation along elevation coordinates. Due to the advantages of super-resolution imaging and a small number of measurements, distribution compressive sensing (DCS) inversion techniques for polarimetric SAR tomography were successfully developed and applied. This paper addresses the 3-D imaging of forested areas based on the framework of DCS using fully polarimetric (FP) multibaseline SAR interferometric (MB-InSAR) tomography at the P-band. A new DCS-based FP TomoSAR method is proposed: a new wavelet-based distributed compressive sensing FP TomoSAR method (FP-WDCS TomoSAR method). The method takes advantage of the joint sparsity between polarimetric channel signals in the wavelet domain to jointly inverse the reflectivity profiles in each channel. The method not only allows high accuracy and super-resolution imaging with a low number of acquisitions, but can also obtain the polarization information of the vertical structure of forested areas. The effectiveness of the techniques for polarimetric SAR tomography is demonstrated using FP P-band airborne datasets acquired by the ONERA SETHI airborne system over a test site in Paracou, French Guiana.
Note de contenu : Introduction
