[Termes IGN] variation diurneRésumé : (Auteur) This study presents a new climatology of monthly temperature for mainland Spain (1951–2010), performed with the highest quality and spatially dense, up-to-date monthly temperature dataset available in the study area (MOTEDAS). Three different interpolation techniques were evaluated: the Local Weighted Linear Regression (LWLR), the Regression-Kriging (RK) and the Regression-Kriging with stepwise selection (RKS), a modification of RK. The performances of the different models were evaluated by the leave-one-out validation procedure, comparing the results from the models with the original data and calculating different error measurements. The three techniques performed better for Tmax than for Tmin, and for the cold, rather than warmer months, also at lower altitude than highland areas. The best results were achieved with LWLR applied for the first time on temperatures in the Spanish mainland. This method improved the accuracy of the temperature reconstruction with respect to RK and RKS. We present a collection of Tmax and Tmin monthly charts, using the same temperature legend to prevent any visual bias in the interpretation of the results. The dataset is available upon request. [Termes IGN] traitement géométrique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) This paper reports on progress in generalization and selective feature removal for a subset of fundamental base map layers that enables competent mapping through scales ranging from 1:24,000 to 1:1,000,000. Thinning and partitioning methods are applied to road features and labels for The National Map of the United States. Roads are thinned adaptively using the ArcGIS Thin Road Network geoprocessing tool, which removes features by feature hierarchy and network connectivity, yet preserves characteristic urban/rural local density patterns that can be lost through simple category removals. The paper describes thinning for label hierarchies within road categories, improved preference in placement for more important road labels, and selective removal of labels through scale. Use of the Radical Law to guide matches between thinning parameters and suitable scales of representation also is shown. Inspection of graphic results of these treatments can help to establish parameters for automated base map design for US topographic mapping. [Termes IGN] traitement géométrique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) In order to be able to draw inferences about real world phenomena from a representation expressed in a digital computer, it is essential that the representation should have a rigorously correct algebraic structure. It is also desirable that the underlying algebra be familiar, and provide a close modelling of those phenomena. The fundamental problem addressed in this paper is that, since computers do not support real-number arithmetic, the algebraic behaviour of the representation may not be correct, and cannot directly model a mathematical abstraction of space based on real numbers. This paper describes a basis for the robust geometrical construction of spatial objects in computer applications using a complex called the “Regular Polytope”. In contrast to most other spatial data types, this definition supports a rigorous logic within a finite digital arithmetic. The definition of connectivity proves to be non-trivial, and alternatives are investigated. It is shown that these alternatives satisfy the relations of a region connection calculus (RCC) as used for qualitative spatial reasoning, and thus introduce the rigor of that reasoning to geographical information systems. They also form what can reasonably be termed a “Finite Boolean Connection Algebra”. The rigorous and closed nature of the algebra ensures that these primitive functions and predicates can be combined to any desired level of complexity, and thus provide a useful toolkit for data retrieval and analysis. The paper argues for a model with two and three-dimensional objects that have been coded in Java and which implement a full set of topological and connectivity functions which is shown to be complete and rigorous. The essence of the approach is to optimize the position and the geometric form of an evolving curve, by measuring information within the regions that compose a particular image partition based on their statistical description. The present region-based variational model is fully automated without the need to manually specify the position of the initial contour. Furthermore, it converges after a small number of iterations, allowing real-time applications. The developed algorithm was tested for the detection of roads, buildings and other man-made objects in a number of aerial and satellite images. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated by the experimental results and the performed qualitative and quantitative. [Termes IGN] traitement géométrique de donnéesRésumé : (Auteur) In this paper, we propose the use of Geometric Activity (GA) features for detecting man-made objects in urban areas using VHR satellite imagery. These features describe the geometric context of a pixel without the necessity of segmentation and can be integrated as extra bands in a per-pixel classification. Two main types of GA features were investigated: ridge features based on the well-known facet model and morphological features obtained by applying closing transforms with structuring elements of different size and shape. Our findings show a substantial increase in classification accuracy for the man-made object classes “roads and buildings with dark roof” after inclusion of GA features. Next to GA features, the use of object-based features derived from eCognition®, containing both geometric and textural information, was also investigated for per-pixel classification. Accuracies obtained with object-based features are comparable to the accuracies obtained with GA features. The inclusion of both GA features and object-based features further improves the overall accuracy. GA features and object-based features thus contain complementary information.
