[Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Current remote sensing methods can provide detailed tree species classification in boreal forests. However, classification studies have so far focused on the dominant tree species, with few studies on less frequent but ecologically important species. We aimed to separate European aspen (Populus tremula L.), a biodiversity-supporting tree species, from the more common species in European boreal forests (Pinus sylvestris L., Picea abies [L.] Karst., Betula spp.). Using multispectral drone images collected on five dates throughout one thermal growing season (May–September), we tested the optimal season for the acquisition of mono-temporal data. These images were collected from a mature, unmanaged forest. After conversion into photogrammetric point clouds, we segmented crowns manually and automatically and classified the species by linear discriminant analysis. The highest overall classification accuracy (95%) for the four species as well as the highest classification accuracy for aspen specifically (user’s accuracy of 97% and a producer’s accuracy of 96%) were obtained at the beginning of the thermal growing season (13 May) by manual segmentation. On 13 May, aspen had no leaves yet, unlike birches. In contrast, the lowest classification accuracy was achieved on 27 September during the autumn senescence period. This is potentially caused by high intraspecific variation in aspen autumn coloration but may also be related to our date of acquisition. Our findings indicate that multispectral drone images collected in spring can be used to locate and classify less frequent tree species highly accurately. The temporal variation in leaf and canopy appearance can alter the detection accuracy considerably. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) MODIS-based NDVI time series (2000–2016) was applied to monitor sub-annual forest disturbance in the Mexican state of Michoacán, with an algorithm that decomposes the time-series data into a harmonic function and a trend. To detect change, a moving sum of residuals between the observed and predicted NDVI values was compared with that from the reference period. Magnitude of change was computed by subtracting the predicted NDVI from the observed one. By comparing the detected changes with reference data through visual interpretation, a threshold of |0.05| was established as the magnitude of change for forest disturbance detection. The method detected more forest gain than loss for 2013–2016, a result which is supported by recent findings from the national forest inventory. Forest loss decreases yearly for 2013–2016, and forest gain peaks at 2014 and 2015. We verified the findings with data from the global forest cover change project. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) The April 25, 2015 Mw 7.9 Gorkha earthquake in Nepal was characterized by a peak slip of several meters and persisting aftershocks. We report here that, in addition, a dense seismic swarm initiated abruptly in August 2017 at the western edge of the afterslip region, below the high Himalchuli-Manaslu range culminating at 8156 m, a region seismically inactive during the past 35 years. Over 6500 events were recorded by the Nepal National Seismological Network with local magnitude ranging between 1.8 and 3.7 until November 2017. This swarm was reactivated between April and July 2018, with about 10 times less events than in 2017, and in 2019 with only sporadic events. The relocation of swarm earthquakes using proximal temporary stations ascertains a shallow depth of hypocenters between the surface and 20 km depth in the High Himalayan Crystalline slab. This swarm reveals an intriguing localized interplay between orogenic collapse and stress adjustments, involving possibly CO2-rich fluid migration, more likely post-seismic slip and seasonal enhancements. Using MODIS-based data for the year 2017, multiple procedures were applied: one-way analysis of variance followed by comparison between means, Pearson correlation coefficient, global Moran’s index, simple linear regression, second-order polynomial regression, recursive-partitioning regression and geographically weighted regression. The results showed that land cover explained fair amount of the variability in NDVI but small amount of the variability in daytime and nighttime LST. In addition, an inverted surface urban heat island pattern was observed in daytime. Finally, applying different regression procedures produced different perspectives about the complex and variable relationships between daytime and nighttime LST and NDVI in different seasons. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) The present study develops ArcMap models to implement the following three methods: FAO-56 Penman–Monteith (FAO PM), Hargreaves–Samani (HS) and Hansen, with the former used as a reference. Moreover, three models implementing statistical indices (RMSD, MB, NMB) are also created. The purpose is threefold, as follows: to investigate the variability in the daily mean reference evapotranspiration (ETo) for the Decembers and Augusts during 2016–2019, over Peloponnese, Greece. Furthermore, to investigate the agreement between the methods’ ETo estimates, and examine the former along with MODIS ET (daily) averaged products. The study area is a complex Mediterranean area. Meteorological data from sixty-two stations under the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), and MODIS Terra LST products, have been employed. FAO PM is found sensitive to wind speed and depicts interactions among climate parameters (T, evaporative demand and water availability) in the frame of climate change. The years 2016–2019 are four of the warmest since the preindustrial era. Hargreaves–Samani’s estimations for the Decembers of 2016–2019 were almost identical to MODIS ET, despite their different physical meaning. However, for the Augusts there are considerable discrepancies between the methods’ and MODIS’s estimates, attributed to the higher evaporative demand in the summertime. The GIS models are accurate, reliable, time-saving, and adjustable to any study area.
