[Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) Dark maps, which are also called dark modes or dark themes, have gained popularity, but their usability has not been experimentally evaluated. This article presents a user experiment that uses eye-tracking to assess the usability of dark and light maps. Here, two widely used web maps, Google Maps and Gaode Maps, are selected at the street and city scales. Eight map-use tasks are designed and cover four operations (identify, compare, rank, and associate) with space-alone and attributes-in-space distinctions. Four pairs of map-use tasks (light-during-the-day, dark-during-the-day, dark-at-night, and light-at-night) are examined from three aspects: effectiveness, efficiency, and cognitive load. The results provide preliminary evidence that the light-during-the-day performance is generally the best in most cases, followed by the dark-at-night performance; the dark-during-the-day performance is the worst in all cases, followed by the light-at-night performance, which suggests that aligning the map design with the environment (i.e., lighting environment) is critical for better communication. The light-during-the-day performance is the best for space-alone tasks, and the dark-at-night performance is the best for attributes-in-space tasks. Our investigation also indicates that dark maps are far less favored in practice, which suggests that users' preference for using the dark mode of public-facing web maps needs to be shaped. Since light and dark maps are associated with photopic and scotopic vision, respectively, the results indicate the need for future studies on how to leverage scotopic vision to design better dark maps. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) This paper evaluates cognitively plausible geovisualization techniques for mapping movement data. With the widespread increase in the availability and quality of space-time data capturing movement trajectories of individuals, meaningful representations are needed to properly visualize and communicate trajectory data and complex movement patterns using geographic displays. Many visualization and visual analytics approaches have been proposed to map movement trajectories (e.g. space-time paths, animations, trajectory lines, etc.). However, little is known about how effective these complex visualizations are in capturing important aspects of movement data. Given the complexity of movement data which involves space, time, and context dimensions, it is essential to evaluate the communicative efficiency and efficacy of various visualization forms in helping people understand movement data. This study assesses the effectiveness of static and dynamic movement displays as well as visual variables in communicating movement parameters along trajectories, such as speed and direction. To do so, a web-based survey is conducted to evaluate the understanding of movement visualizations by a nonspecialist audience. This and future studies contribute fundamental insights into the cognition of movement visualizations and inspire new methods for the empirical evaluation of geovisualizations. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) “Why,” “what,” and “how” are basic questions to be answered in augmented map research as an intersecting direction. This study summarizes dynamic visual representations and true 3D interactions as characteristics of augmented maps from the cartographic perspective through analysis of the research progress in different disciplines. From secondary viewpoints of cognition and design, the augmented map cube is presented to establish the research framework in three directions: cognitive purposes, information dimensions, and interactive devices, in which map-based spatial cognition theory, augmented visualization, and interactive features are considered. The research evaluation is carried out to determine the reasonableness of the cube and then identify different research statuses in any one or two of the directions under the cube. Based on a literature search and classification, 30 typical studies were used for structural analysis to discover research trends and new directions that can be mined. The results show that the cube can be used to evaluate the coverage of an article or provide researchers with research trends and new possibilities. Our conclusions include but are not limited to the following: Research for retrieval purposes deserves attention, augmented visualization of specific individual elements is key to understanding maps, and interactive devices become more intangible. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Because crafting attractive and effective colors from scratch is a high-effort and time-consuming process in map and visualization design, transferring color from an inspiration source to maps and visualizations is a promising technique for both novices and experts. To date, existing image-to-image color transfer methods suffer from ambiguities and inconsistencies; no computational approach is available to transfer color from arbitrary images to vector maps. To fill this gap, we propose a computational method that transfers color from arbitrary images to a vector map. First, we classify reference images into regions with measures of saliency. Second, we quantify the communicative quality and esthetics of colors in maps; we then transform the problem of color transfer into a dual-objective, multiple-constraint optimization problem. We also present a solution method that can create a series of optimal color suggestions and generate a communicative quality-esthetic compromise solution. We compare our method with an image-to-image method based on two sample maps and six reference images. The results indicate that our method is adaptive to mapping scales, themes, and regions. The evaluation also provides preliminary evidence that our method can achieve better communicative quality and harmony.
