[Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (auteur) In today’s information age, thematic maps increasingly appear in all kinds of media and publications and many users control the map design process themselves. Due to wider prevalence of data, teaching the principles of thematic cartography is gaining interest. Students need to understand the power of thematic maps to reveal geographic patterns and relations, and should learn how to create convincing maps. In this paper, student maps featuring socio-economic themes for Northern South Africa show how attention can be drawn to information hidden in data. Seven students each prepared a black-and-white traditional thematic map and a coloured infographics-style map, which were later enhanced by a well-trained cartographer. Through these maps, we demonstrate that the power of thematic maps depends on the chosen cartographic representation and that diversity of visualization options matters when telling a story with a map. Discussion of the maps illustrates the relevance and challenge of thematic maps for society, the need to develop map literacy, and the possibility to accommodate new visualization trends, like narrative data visualization, in thematic cartography teaching. The emphasis should be on using multivariate data and allowing infographics characteristics, thus fostering creativity and preparing students for a role in interdisciplinary data journalism teams. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (auteur) The so-called “attention mechanisms” in Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) denote an automatic adaptation of DNNs to capture representative features given a specific classification task and related data. Such attention mechanisms perform both globally by reinforcing feature channels and locally by stressing features in each feature map. Channel and feature importance are learnt in the global end-to-end DNNs training process. In this paper, we present a study and propose a method with a different approach, adding supplementary visual data next to training images. We use human visual attention maps obtained independently with psycho-visual experiments, both in task-driven or in free viewing conditions, or powerful models for prediction of visual attention maps. We add visual attention maps as new data alongside images, thus introducing human visual attention into the DNNs training and compare it with both global and local automatic attention mechanisms. Experimental results show that known attention mechanisms in DNNs work pretty much as human visual attention, but still the proposed approach allows a faster convergence and better performance in image classification tasks. [Termes IGN] visualisation de donnéesRésumé : (auteur) New technologies have allowed traditional map production criteria to be modified or even subverted. Starting from the communication sciences—journalism in particular—and digital humanities via the history of communication, we show how to use interactive digital maps for the production and publication of knowledge through and/or for participation. Firstly, we establish the theoretical-conceptual framework necessary to base the practices, dividing the elements into three areas: interactive maps and knowledge production (decentralization, pluralization, reticularization, and humanization), maps as instruments to promote political and social participation (egalitarianism, horizontality, and criticism), and maps as instruments for the visualization of data that favors the user experience (interactivity, multimediality, reticularity of reading, and participation). Next, we present two cases that we developed to put into practice the theoretical concepts that we established: the Mapa Infoparticipa (Infoparticipa Map), which shows the results of the evaluation of the transparency of public administrations, and the Ciutadania Plural (Plural Citizenship) web platform for the production of social knowledge about the past and the present. This theoretical and practical model shows the possibilities of interactive maps as tools to promote political participation and as instruments for the construction of social knowledge in a collaborative, participatory, networked way.
