We review historic examples to extend Bertin’s framework with literal encoding, 10 typographic attributes, variations on scope including characters, words, phrases and paragraphs, and more layout types. We then apply the framework to Bertin’s population dataset to create 11 new typographic visualizations. The approach raises questions for new research such as readability, semantic association, interaction, and comprehension. [Termes IGN] zoomRésumé : (Auteur) Discrete global grid systems (DGGSs) have emerged in recent years as a new specification for working with global heterogeneous data sets in a Digital Earth framework. Point clouds originating from different sources usually have varying initial characteristics. This research aims to analyze to what extent a DGGS can be used to handle point clouds having varying coordinate systems, acquired at different levels of detail (densities), and at different times in the creation of a global map of point clouds. DGGSs, which are currently limited to a 2D (surface) space, are extended into 3D and 4D spaces to fully harness the multidimensional nature of point clouds. A continuous spatial indexing strategy, based on a space-filling curve, is then developed on an ellipsoidal model of the Earth and used to efficiently cluster and retrieve DGGS-based point clouds stored in a database. Finally, the queried points are visualized in a Web browser. The hierarchical, multi-resolution nature of a DGGS is exploited to achieve a variable-scale smooth-zoom visualization. The challenges and opportunities of point cloud integration in a DGGS are presented. The Editorial starts with an overview about the evolution of the Internet and first HCI concepts and stimulates recent HCI developments using 3D and 4D apps, running on all mobile devices with OS Android, iOS, Linus, and Windows. Eight research articles present the state-of-the-art in HCI–GIS-related issues, starting with gender and age differences in using indoor maps via the estimation of building heights from space to an efficient visualization method for polygonal data with dynamic simplification. Crisis managers must plan interventions very quickly to facilitate the arrival of the first emergency. In a crisis unit, experts visualize heterogeneous visual representations of spatio-temporal information, in order to facilitate decision-making, based on various types of screens, i.e. laptops, tablets, or wall screens. Visualizing all this information at the same time on the same interface would lead to cognitive overload. In this paper, we assume that it could be of interest to provide innovative co-visualization models and tools, to bring hazard, geospatial and climate information together, in a shared interface. We propose to explore spatial and temporal multiplexing tools within a dedicated geovisualization environment, in order to help expert decision-making. The proposition is implemented with the case study of a tsunami event in the Caribbean sea. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) This paper states an overview of my dissertation research centered on the continuous immersive visualization and navigation through time and space of large sets of historical photographs. The research aims for: (i) the treatment of scientific obstacles (e.g. data volume, heterogeneity, distortions, and uncertainties) that appear when old pictures are placed in today’s environment; (ii) the visualization (saliently and spatially) of these photos. The main model of the study is image-based rendering IBR, because of its capacity to use imprecise or non-existent geometry (i.e. since a modern 3D scene may differ from a historical one, due to environmental changes over time). The findings of this work may contribute significantly by extending the current IBR models and providing a new innovative way to examine these massive and heterogeneous datasets.
