[Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) Quantifying evapotranspiration (ET) is a key element for achieving better water management, especially in regions where agriculture is the main water consumer. A hybrid model combining the SEBAL and RESET models (S-RESET) was developed to effectively estimate actual ET (water use) of the agriculture sector around the Phoenix metropolitan area. To examine how irrigated agriculture water consumption varies with climate, the S-RESET model was applied under wet and dry climatic conditions. Results show that the average ET for active agriculture is 9.3 mm/day (_ 3.8mm/day) during the study period. Seasonal water use was 438 mm for 2000 (drought) and 494 mm for 2008 (wet). Based on the seasonal ET, we concluded that farmers in arid region use the same amount of water regardless of climatic conditions, implying that the agriculture sector as a whole may not be sensitive to drought as long as there is sufficient water from irrigation. This finding carries significant implications for the region's water security. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) Spatial and temporal variations of soil moisture strongly affect flooding, erosion, solute transport, and vegetation productivity. Their characterization offers numerous possibilities for the improvement of our understanding of complex land-surface-atmosphere interactions. In this paper, soil moisture dynamics at the soil's surface (the first centimeters) and in its root zone (at depths down to 1 m) are investigated using 25 x 25 km2 scale data (Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT)/METorological OPerational (METOP) scatterometer), for a semiarid region in North Africa. Our study highlights the quality of the surface and root-zone soil moisture products, derived from ASCAT data recorded over a two-year period. Surface soil moisture tends to be highly variable because it is strongly influenced by atmospheric conditions (rain and evaporation). On the other hand, root-zone moisture is considerably less variable. A statistical drought-monitoring index, referred to as the “moisture anomaly index,” is derived from ASCAT and European Remote Sensing (ERS) time series. This index was tested with ERS and ASCAT products during the 1991-2010 study period. A strong correlation is found between the proposed index and the standardized precipitation index. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) In this study, we have implemented a fast atmospheric correction algorithm to IRS-P6 advanced wide field sensor (AWiFS) satellite data for retrieving surface reflectance under different atmospheric and surface conditions. The algorithm is based on MODIS climatology products and simplified use of Second Simulation of Satellite Signal in Solar Spectrum (6S) radiative transfer code. The algorithm requires information on aerosol optical depth (AOD) for correcting the satellite dataset. The atmospheric correction algorithm has been tested for IRS-P6 AWiFS False colour composites covering the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics Farm, Patancheru, Hyderabad, India, under varying atmospheric conditions. Ground measurements of surface reflectance representing different land use/land cover, i.e. red soil, chick pea, groundnut and pigeon pea crops were conducted to validate the algorithm. Terra MODIS AOD550 validated with Microtops-II sun photometer-derived AOD500 over the urban region of Hyderabad exhibited very good correlation of ?0.92, suggesting possible use of satellite-derived AOD for atmospheric correction. [Termes IGN] zone semi-arideRésumé : (Auteur) Recent articles are indicating that polarimetric data provide significantly more information than conventional or multi-polarized images, particularly due to the additional phase information. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the multi-polarized and fully polarimetric L-band airborne SAR-R99B data, in terms of their capability to distinguish among different agricultural crops in the western part of Bahia State, Brazil. Emphasis was given to coffee, cotton and pasture crops which were at well developed growing stages. Discrimination among crops was carried out using graphical analysis of mean backscatter values. Crop classification was performed for single and multiple polarizations, and fully polarimetric images with a classifier that uses the contextual Iterated Conditional Modes–ICM algorithm. The investigation confirmed the potential of L-band multi-polarized and polarimetric airborne SAR-R99B data to distinguish and classify agricultural crops in the tropical condition of the test-site. In addition, it clearly indicated the gradual and considerable improvement that was achieved going from single to three polarizations and from multi-polarized to fully polarimetric images.
