[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) The expansion of French forests both in surface area and growing stock is explored based on National Forest Inventory data and Daubrée’s statistics (1908). The author studied their geographic variability under various ownership schemes (private, state or other regulated public forests) and depending on their composition (hardwood/softwood). Between 1908 and 2010, the increase in surface area was 5.1 million hectares (+ 50 %) with the fastest expansion rate in the Massif Central, and hardwoods gaining ground twice as fast as softwoods, although their overall proportions remained unchanged. Between 1975 and 2010, growing stock (+ 59 %, + 930 million cubic metres) developed three times more quickly than surface area but varied considerably between geographic locations: with area taking the lead in southern France and Brittany while in the Massif Central growing stock was preeminent, pointing to a certain continuity in relation to previous expansion of forest area. Over the same period, private forests and other regulated public forests experienced similar relative surface area variations (+ 20 %), but private forests accumulated twice as much growing stock (+ 80 %) as public forests. Between 1987 and 1994, private deciduous forests increased the most (+ 280 000 ha and + 105 million cubic metres), followed by private coniferous forests (+ 60 000 ha and + 63 million cubic metres). In the recent decade (2006-2015), increases in areas and stocks have continued at a pace of respectively 120 000 ha/year and 44 million cubic metres suggesting that this trend will continue over coming decades. [Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Increasing the density of natural reserves in the forest landscape may provide conservation benefits for biodiversity within and beyond reserve borders. We used 2 French data sets on saproxylic beetles and landscape cover of forest reserves (LCFR) to test this hypothesis: national standardized data derived from 252 assessment plots in managed and reserve stands in 9 lowland and 5 highland forests and data from the lowland Rambouillet forest, a forested landscape where a pioneer conservation policy led to creation of a dense network of reserves. Abundance of rare and common saproxylic species and total saproxylic species richness were higher in forest reserves than in adjacent managed stands only in highland forests. In the lowland regional case study, as LCFR increased total species richness and common species abundance in reserves increased. In this case study, when there were two or more reserve patches, rare species abundance inside reserves was higher and common species richness in managed stands was higher than when there was a single large reserve. Spillover and habitat amount affected ecological processes underlying these landscape reserve effects. When LCFR positively affected species richness and abundance in reserves or managed stands, >12-20% reserve cover led to the highest species diversity and abundance. This result is consistent with the target of 17% forested land area in reserves set at the Nagoya biodiversity summit in 2010. Therefore, to preserve biodiversity we recommend at least doubling the current proportion of forest reserves in European forested landscapes. [Termes IGN] vingtième siècleRésumé : (auteur) According to the EU Habitats Directive, heathlands are “natural habitats of community interest”. Heathland management aims at conserving these habitats threatened by various changes, including successional processes leading to forest vegetation. We investigate the dynamics of woody species to the detriment of heathland over a period of 60 years in the Fontainebleau forest and we examine the effects of soil types, soil depth and topography parameters on heathland stability. We assess changes in forest cover between 1946 and 2003 by comparing vegetation maps derived from aerial photographs coupled to GIS analyses. The results show the loss of more than 75% of heathland during 1946–2003 due to tree colonisation of abandoned heathland. We detected differences in the dynamics of colonisation between coniferous and deciduous trees. The colonisation of heathland by coniferous species was faster over the last 20 years of our study period. Tree encroachment was faster in north-facing areas and in areas of acidic luvisols. While this dynamic was very slow in acid sandstone soils, heathland stability was more important in shallow soils on flat and south facing areas. Our study has the potential to assist land managers in selecting those heathland areas that will be easier to conserve and/or to restore by focusing on areas and spatial conditions that prevent forest colonisation and hence favour the long-term stability of heathland.
