[Vedettes matières IGN] BotaniqueRésumé : (auteur) Context : While historical increases in forest growth have been largely documented, investigations on historical wood density changes remain anecdotic. They suggest possible density decreases in softwoods and ring-porous hardwoods, but are lacking for diffuse-porous hardwoods.
Aims : To evaluate the historical change in mean ring density of common beech, in a regional context where a ring-porous hardwood and a softwood have been studied, and assess the additional effect of past historical increases in radial growth (+50 % over 100 years), resulting from the existence of a positive ring size–density relationship in broadleaved species.
Methods : Seventy-four trees in 28 stands were sampled in Northeastern France to accurately separate developmental stage and historical signals in ring attributes. First, the historical change in mean ring density at 1.30 m (X-ray microdensitometry) was estimated statistically, at constant developmental stage and ring width. The effect of past growth increases was then added to assess the net historical change in wood density.
Results : A progressive centennial decrease in mean ring density of −55 kg m−3 (−7.5 %) was identified (−10 % following the most recent decline). The centennial growth increase induced a maximum +25 kg m−3 increase in mean ring density, whose net variation thus remained negative (−30 kg m−3).
Conclusions : This finding of a moderate but significant decrease in wood density that exceeds the effect of the positive growth change extends earlier reports obtained on other wood patterns in a same regional context and elsewhere. Despite their origin not being understood, such decreases hence form an issue for forest carbon accounting.Numéro de notice : A2013-828 Affiliation des auteurs : LIF+Ext (2012-2019) Thématique : FORET Nature : Article DOI : 10.1007/s13595-013-0263-2 Date de publication en ligne : 21/02/2013 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-013-0263-2 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=83727

[Termes IGN] SuèdeRésumé : (auteur) Signatory countries to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and its supplementary Kyoto Protocol (KP) are obliged to report greenhouse gas emissions and removals. Changes in the carbon stock of living biomass should be reported using either the default or stock change methods of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) under the Land Use, Land-Use Change and Forestry sector. Traditionally, volume estimates are used as a forestry measures. Changes in living biomass may be assessed by first estimating the change in the volume of stem wood and then converting this volume to whole tree biomass using biomass expansion factors (BEFs). However, this conversion is often non-trivial because the proportion of stem wood increases with tree size at the expense of branches, foliage, stump and roots. Therefore, BEFs typically vary over time and their use may result in biased estimates. The objective of this study was to evaluate differences between biomass estimates obtained using biomass equations and BEFs with particular focus on uncertainty analysis. Assuming that the development of tree fractions in different ways can be handled by individual biomass equations, BEFs for standing stock were shown to overestimate the biomass sink capacity (Sweden). Although estimates for BEFs derived for changes in stock were found to be unbiased, the estimated BEFs varied substantially over time (0.85–1.22 ton CO2/m3). However, to some extent this variation may be due to random sampling errors rather than actual changes. The highest accuracy was obtained for estimates based on biomass equations for different tree fractions, applied to data from the Swedish National Forest Inventory using a permanent sample design (estimated change in stock 1990–2005: 420 million tons CO2, with a standard error amounting to 26.7 million tons CO2) Many countries have adopted such a design combined with the stock change method for reporting carbon stock changes under the UNFCCC/KP. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In order to estimate carbon stock in above ground biomass (CS-AGB) of M. Pizzalto forest in the Central-Apennines in Italy, the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) vegetation index data (NDVI and EVI) were used in combination with field data. Biotic and abiotic parameters (slope angle, slope gradient, elevation, seasonal incoming solar radiation, length of growing season (LGS), soil type and forest management type) has been used in the modelling. NDVI and EVI values of field samples were extracted and used to estimate the LGS of beech forest for the six year period (2005-2010). Two management types, old-growth forest and young forest, showed average AGB and CS-AGB were 247 and 123 tons.ha-1 respectively in 2010 comparable to values for beech forests in the Apennines and Europe. LGS and management are the significant variables in a linear regression model for CS - AGB. Therefore, the forest authority can manage the young forest as sinks of carbon in agreement with the Kyoto protocol of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). [Termes IGN] tomographieRésumé : (Auteur) Wood density is a characteristic of major interest. Usually, it is used as an indicator of wood quality; however, in the context of global change, it is increasingly used for biomass and carbon storage estimations. X-ray computer tomography is a method which enables quick estimates of wood density after applying a calibration procedure.
A review of the literature is presented in this article. Most of the previous studies have been performed in the 80’s or at the beginning of the 90’s. In this study, the relationship between wood density and Hounsfield numbers was investigated using a recent medical scanner. A linear relationship was fitted using a calibration data set which consisted in tropical wood samples representing a large range of densities ranging between 133 and 1319 kg m−3, and then validated using an independent data set (mainly temperate tree species). The fitted relationships were very strong (R2 > 0.999), whichever the tested scanner settings, with slight but significant effects of the current voltage and reconstruction filters. The RMSE values computed from the validation data set ranged between 5.4 and 7.7 kg m−3 for densities ranging between 364 and 821 kg m−3. In conclusion, this method of calibration enables the use of a medical scanner to obtain maps of wood density, in a fast and non destructive way, and with a very good accuracy. Very interesting perspectives are opened regarding biomass distribution within trees.
