[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Modern climate change is reshaping species distributions, particularly on slow shifting organisms such as trees. Forests composition is therefore expected to change in the coming decades, which will alter ecosystem functions and biodiversity, with negative ecological and societal consequences for the planet.Tree distribution depends on several demographic traits such as recruitment, growth and mortality that interact across large climatic gradients. Yet, mortality is rising in all forested biomes in the world. In Europe for instance, forest mortality increases towards the climatic trailing edge of the species ranges as a response to drought. These high mortality rates are usually related to a lack of recruitment, which may induce vegetation shifts, but also opening new opportunities for the establishment of exotic invasive species. As demographic trait responses to climate vary across and within species, understanding trait interactions along large climatic gradients is crucial to better predict the impact of climate change on forest productivity, composition and range-shift dynamics. In this work I analyzed tree mortality and recruitment patterns of twenty of the most common native species and two exotic species in European forests and their triggered drivers. To this aim, I used data of 2 million trees from 153 892 plots measured in the National Forest Inventories from France, Spain, Germany, Belgium (Wallonia), Sweden and Finland. In the first chapter, I analyzed tree mortality and showed that the highest mortality occurrence happens in the climatic trailing edge, driven by drought, whereas the intensity of mortality is triggered by competition, drought and high temperatures and was uniformly scattered across species ranges. In addition, the occurrence of mortality was the highest in the trailing edge of temperate species and the lowest in the leading edge for half of the Mediterranean species. In the second chapter I analyzed tree recruitment, showing that for most species, there are no differences in recruitment across species ranges. Recruitment was strongly limited by competition and often depended on age, or growth rate of the plot. Surprisingly, the role of drought in tree recruitment only was evident in interaction with tree competition. In the third chapter, I assessed the invasiveness of two exotic invasive species, Quercus rubra and Robinia pseudoacacia. My results showed that both species are able to recruit new individuals under all other species canopies, to become dominant at the expanse of many trees species and suggested that they are both expanding their ranges northwards and southwards, in part because they are relatively less sensitive to drought than the other species. All together, my results highlight that trees sensitivity to current climate change is trait-dependent and differs across species ranges. The southern part of the species ranges can be shaped by drought-induced mortality, while recruitment is much less affected by drought. This different sensitivity to climate of tree mortality and recruitment suggests that recruitment could counteract the negative effects of climate change to a certain extent and that forests might be more resilient than what was previously thought. Yet, the exotic species expansion is less affected by the surrounding environment than Mediterranean and temperate species and could benefit from climate warming. Hence, the potential help of recruitment for in-situ species range persistence, and the management strategies which could help forests to mitigate future climate change remains to be explored. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Climate change mitigation and energy transition are becoming priorities on many political agenda across the world, and especially in Europe. Forests, through their capacity to sequester carbon and produce renewable materials, are key assets to reach these environmental goals. European forests are encountered across wide biogeographic gradients and have recently shown contrasted productivity responses to climate change. Maximizing the climate benefits of European forests requires to precisely track forest productivity trajectories across regions in a continuously changing growing environment. National Forest Inventories (NFIs) perform systematic forest surveys across space and time and are powerful tools to monitor forest productivity dynamics and climate controls upon forest productivity at wide geographical scales. Building upon the ongoing pan-European harmonization of NFI data and information, we developed an original and promising modeling framework to extract large-scale climate-driven productivity dynamics and confront them to silvicultural and environmental attributes. With its simple and versatile design, it can be easily applied to diverse NFI schemes (annual vs. periodic field campaigns, permanent vs. temporary plots, radial increment vs. diameter measurements). To illustrate its promising potential to monitoring forest productivity dynamics, we consecutively applied it to study pure and even-aged conifer forests (1) in France over the 2006-2016 and (2) in France and Austria over the 1996-2016 period. Results highlighted in both cases a strong control of water resources on recent productivity trends, particularly in plains where fast-growing conifers species have been massively introduced during the XXe century and where sequestration dynamics have been the least favorable. Greater forest structural complexity was also identified as a driver of greater forest resilience to climate change. These results are of major concerns when conifer plantations have been largely encouraged these last decades, notably through state financial programs. Harmonized NFI data at the transnational level provide reliable information to i) survey carbon sequestration dynamics of different regional forest sinks; (ii) alert on the weakening of these sinks, (iii) implement large-scale climate-smart forest management; and (iv) adapt carbon sequestration strategies (ex. tree species substitution). The application of the present framework to other NFIs in Europe would support an integrative and continental monitoring of forest resources, in line with current EU strategies. [Termes IGN] patrimoine naturelRésumé : (auteur) National Forest Inventories (NFIs) play an important role in understanding the state of forests at the national and regional levels. Forest inventory for small territorial areas, such as municipalities, is also important for decision-makers. However, information is relatively limited at this level. As a result, developing small area estimation (SAE) approaches has gained increasing popularity in the field of forest inventory. It enables prediction of forest attributes for sub-populations using regression models based on auxiliary data commonly derived from remote sensing techniques over an area of interest (AOI). It has been reported that SAE can improve the precision of forest inventory without increasing costs (Mandallaz, Breschan and Hill 2013) and may produce reliable predictions of forest attributes locally, even when field plots are not available (Rao 2014). Tomppo (2006) is a pioneer in the use of auxiliary data for multisource forest inventory. Previously, common sources of auxiliary data often came from satellite-based imagery (McRoberts et al. 2007), digital aerial photogrammetry (Breidenbach et al. 2018), and airborne laser scanning (Magnussen et al. 2014). NASA’s newly-launched Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) is a full waveform LiDAR instrument aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Its products consist of footprint measurements projected to cover 4% of the global land surface by the end of its mission (Dubayah et al. 2020). This will provide an unprecedented opportunity to systematically collect samples of forest information that can be used in SAE on a large scale. The objective of this study is to explore the possibility of using GEDI auxiliary data to improve the accuracy of forest inventory for a large natural area in central France (Sologne), as well as for smaller sub-areas defined by French administrative boundaries (departments). The results will then be compared against estimates obtained from simple random sampling (SRS), to assess the efficiency of the auxiliary data. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Contexte.
Conclusion. Numéro de notice : 17682 Affiliation des auteurs : LIF+Ext (2020- ) Thématique : FORET Nature : Thèse française Note de thèse : Thèse de doctorat : Biologie et écologie des forêts et des agrosystèmes : AgroParisTech : 2021 Organisme de stage : LIF (IGN) & BEF - Biogéochimie des Écosystèmes Forestiers (AgroParisTech) nature-HAL : Thèse DOI : sans En ligne : https://hal.science/tel-03970190v1 Format de la ressource électronique : URL Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=98153 La biomasse des forêts méditerranéennes : Les premiers résultats du projet XyloDensMap / Jean-Michel Leban in Forêt méditerranéenne, vol 41 n° 4 (December 2020)PermalinkUnprecedented pluri-decennial increase in the growing stock of French forests is persistent and dominated by private broadleaved forests / Jean-Daniel Bontemps in Annals of Forest Science, vol 77 n° 4 (December 2020)PermalinkRecent growth trends of conifers across Western Europe are controlled by thermal and water constraints and favored by forest heterogeneity / Clémentine Ols in Science of the total environment, vol 742 ([10/11/2020])PermalinkLa croissance des forêts et les changements environnementaux / François Lebourgeois in Sciences, eaux & territoires, n° 33 (avril 2020)PermalinkTowards a set of national forest inventory indicators to be used for assessing the conservation status of the habitats directive forest habitat types / Marko Kovac in Journal for nature conservation, vol 53 (February 2020)PermalinkA spatially explicit database of wind disturbances in European forests over the period 2000–2018 / Giovanni Forzieri in Earth System Science Data, vol 12 n° 1 (January 2020)PermalinkVulnerability of forest ecosystems to fire in the French Alps / Sylvain Dupire in European Journal of Forest Research, Vol 138 n° 5 (octobre 2019)PermalinkHarmonised projections of future forest resources in Europe / Jari Vauhkonen in Annals of Forest Science, Vol 76 n° 3 (September 2019)PermalinkIncreasing precision for French forest inventory estimates using the k-NN technique with optical and photogrammetric data and model-assisted estimators / Dinesh Babu Irulappa-Pillai-Vijayakumar in Remote sensing, vol 11 n° 8 (August 2019)PermalinkRegisTree: a registration algorithm to enhance forest inventory plot georeferencing / Maryem Fadili in Annals of Forest Science, vol 76 n° 2 (June 2019)PermalinkThe conservation status assessment of Natura 2000 forest habitats in Europe: capabilities, potentials and challenges of national forest inventories data / Iciar A.
