[Termes IGN] qualité des donnéesRésumé : (auteur) The perspective of European National Mapping Agencies (NMA) on the role of citizen sensing in map production was explored. The NMAs varied greatly in their engagement with the community generating volunteered geographic information (VGI) and in their future plans. From an assessment of NMA standard practices, it was evident that much VGI was acquired with a positional accuracy that, while less than that typically acquired by NMAs, actually exceeded the requirements of the nominal data capture scale used by most NMAs. Opportunities for VGI use in map revision and updating were evident, especially for agencies that use a continuous rather than cyclical updating policy. Some NMAs had also developed systems to engage with citizen sensors and examples are discussed. Only rarely was VGI used to collect data on features beyond the standard set used by the NMAs. The potential role of citizen sensing and so its current scale of use by NMAs is limited by a series of concerns, notably relating to issues of data quality, the nature and motivation of the contributors, legal issues, the sustainability of data source, and employment fears of NMA staff. Possible priorities for future research and development are identified to help ensure that the potential of VGI in mapping is realized. [Termes IGN] valorisation des donnéesRésumé : (auteur) Digitized archives of national mapping agencies are valuable assets for a number of usages. One is to evaluate hypothesis about a past state of Earth – for example to assess the past presence of water sources based on old maps - , another usage is to observe dynamics – for example to describe urban sprawl based on series of images and maps - and to geo - reference documents that can be indexed and integrated based on their location in time and space. Last, a growing need is to provide a referencing framework in space and time for thematic digitized data, typically in the digital humanities or in the cultural industry. Besides, more and more data are being produced and the question of how to archive them efficiently is tightly related to the expected usage of the archives. Late 2014, EuroSDR started a specific initiative targeting the valorization of existing digitized archives of national mapping agencies and cadasters - following up the EuroSDR Archiving project - extended to any geodata that has been or will be replaced by newer one. A first seminar in December 2014 led to define a strategy comprising two facets. First facet was to reach out users to learn from them what are the priorities and requirements. Second facet was to share more elements between NMCAs’ good practices, and then maybe infrastructure components, datasets, servers, software, licenses, etc. but also with other actors. A follow up seminar targeted both facets through the focus on graphical interfaces. It aimed at presenting latest research and developments about graphical interfaces to interact with geographical historical data, at getting more insight on user communities’ requirements and fostering collaborations between national mapping agencies, academics and the industry in this domain. This report presents the highlights of this EuroSDR seminar of graphical interfaces for historical data, which took place in Saint Mandé (near Paris, France), on June 26th 2017. It was organized in three parts: presentations from national portals, presentations from research, discussions to draft a EuroSDR roadmap on graphical interfaces for historical data. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (Auteur) In the context of the personalization of map design, cartographic needs have been highlighted considering the handling of more artistic and expressive tools, in order to design stylized and expressive maps, in existing cartographic pipelines. Based on previous works on style formalization, an approach of the specification of the style of a map has been proposed and experimented for some use cases. A first step concerns the analysis of inspiration sources, in order to extract "what does make the style of the source"™, i.e. the salient visual characteristics to be automatically reproduced (textures, spatial arrangements, linear stylization, etc.). In order to mimic and generate those visual characteristics, existing and innovative rendering techniques have been implemented in our GIS engine, thus extending the capabilities to generate expressive renderings. Therefore, an extension of the existing cartographic pipeline has been proposed based on the following aspects: 1- extension of the symbolization specifications OGC SLD/SE in order to provide a formalism to specify new types of Symbolizers and their related rendering methods; 2- separate specification of each rendering method and its parametrization, as metadata. The main contribution has been described in (Christophe et al. 2016). We focus here on the extension of the cartographic pipeline (SLD++ and metadata) and the diversity of map design capabilities that have been experimented for many topographic styles: old cartographic styles (Cassini), artistic styles (watercolor, impressionism, Japanese print), hybrid topographic styles (ortho-imagery & vector data) and finally abstract and photo-realist styles for the geovisualization of costal area. The genericity and interoperability of the approach is promising and has already been tested for 3D visualization.
