[Termes IGN] régression multipleRésumé : (Auteur) Grassland degradation has accelerated in recent decades in response to increased climate variability and human activity. Rangeland and grassland conditions directly affect forage quality, livestock production, and regional grassland resources. In this study, we examined the potential of integrating synthetic aperture radar (SAR, Sentinel-1) and optical remote sensing (Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2) data to monitor the conditions of a native pasture and an introduced pasture in Oklahoma, USA. Leaf area index (LAI) and aboveground biomass (AGB) were used as indicators of pasture conditions under varying climate and human activities. We estimated the seasonal dynamics of LAI and AGB using Sentinel-1 (S1), Landsat-8 (LC8), and Sentinel-2 (S2) data, both individually and integrally, applying three widely used algorithms: Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Random Forest (RF). Results indicated that integration of LC8 and S2 data provided sufficient data to capture the seasonal dynamics of grasslands at a 10–30-m spatial resolution and improved assessments of critical phenology stages in both pluvial and dry years. The satellite-based LAI and AGB models developed from ground measurements in 2015 reasonably predicted the seasonal dynamics and spatial heterogeneity of LAI and AGB in 2016. By comparison, the integration of S1, LC8, and S2 has the potential to improve the estimation of LAI and AGB more than 30% relative to the performance of S1 at low vegetation cover (LAI 2 m2/m2, AGB > 500 g/m2). These results demonstrate the potential of combining S1, LC8, and S2 monitoring grazing tallgrass prairie to provide timely and accurate data for grassland management. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Multisource forest inventory methods were developed to improve the precision of national forest inventory estimates. These methods rely on the combination of inventory data and auxiliary information correlated with forest attributes of interest. As these methods have been predominantly tested over coniferous forests, the present study used this approach for heterogeneous and complex deciduous forests in the center of France. The auxiliary data considered included a forest type map, Landsat 8 spectral bands and derived vegetation indexes, and 3D variables derived from photogrammetric canopy height models. On a subset area, changes in canopy height estimated from two successive photogrammetric models were also used. A model-assisted inference framework, using a k nearest-neighbors approach, was used to predict 11 field inventory variables simultaneously. The results showed that among the auxiliary variables tested, 3D metrics improved the precision of dendrometric estimates more than other auxiliary variables. Relative efficiencies (RE) varying from 2.15 for volume to 1.04 for stand density were obtained using all auxiliary variables. Canopy height changes also increased RE from 3% to 26%. Our results confirmed the importance of 3D metrics as auxiliary variables and demonstrated the value of canopy change variables for increasing the precision of estimates of forest structural attributes such as density and quadratic mean diameter. However, conventional methods in a complex and heterogeneous urban landscape usually use mono temporal Landsat TM/ETM + images, which have great uncertainty due to the spectral similarity of different land covers, and pixel-based classifications may not meet the accuracy requirement. This paper proposes an approach that combines spatiotemporal fusion and object-based image analysis, using the spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model to generate a time series of Landsat 8 OLI images on critical dates of sedge swamp and paddy rice, and the time series of MODIS NDVI to calculate phenological parameters for identifying wetlands with an object-based method. The results of a case study indicate that different types of wetlands can be successfully identified, with 92.38%. The overall accuracy and 0.85 Kappa coefficient, and 85% and 90% for the user’s accuracies of sedge swamp and paddy respectively. A new algorithm was proposed to detect clouds from snow in Landsat 8 imagery. Taking the Hetian District region, where there is frequent cloud and snow cover, in northwestern China as one of the typical case areas. The typical case is presented in detail to illustrate the approach produces and results. A band math method for cloud and snow discrimination index (CSDI) was firstly conducted in this paper, fractal digital number-frequency (DN-N) algorithm and hotspot analyses were applied to determine the threshold of the CSDI and eliminate false anomalies. The results showed that an overall accuracy exceeding 95% in areas with very bright land surfaces, which indicate that this algorithm is effective for detecting clouds in specific situations where the ground objects have some reflectance characteristics similar to cloud. Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) offers reflectance data over the visible to shortwave-infrared range. OLI offers several advantages, such as adequate spatial and spectral resolution, and 16 day repeat coverage, furthermore, spectral indices derived from Landsat 8 OLI possess great potential for evaluating the status of vegetation. Additionally, classification algorithms are essential for generating accurate maps. Recently, multi-Grained Cascade Forest, which is also called deep forest, was proposed, and it was shown to give highly competitive performance for classification. However, the ability of this algorithm to generate crop maps with satellite data had not yet been evaluated. In this study, the reflectance at 7 bands and 57 spectral indices calculated from Landsat 8 OLI data were evaluated for its potential for crop type identification.
