[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In a changing climate, forest managers need to select productive and climate-change-resilient tree species and provenances. Therefore, assessing the growth response of provenances growing in field trials to climate provides useful information for identifying the more appropriate provenance or variety. To determine the genetic gain through selection of the most productive and resilient families and to decipher the role of crown forms of Norway spruces (Picea abies (L.) Karst.), we used 24 families with a classical crown (pyramidalis) and 24 with a narrow crown (pendula) from eight provenances, growing in a 25-year-old comparative trial. The annual wood characteristics (ring width and early- and latewood), the wood resistance (expressed by latewood proportion (LWP)), and the growth response to climate of the two spruce crown forms were investigated. No significant differences between the two spruce forms were found regarding the ring width characteristics. However, three pendula families of Stâna de Vale I provenance exhibited the highest LWP and could be included in a future selection strategy, the respective trait having also high heritability. Radial growth was positively and significantly correlated with previous September and current July precipitation and negatively with current June temperature. Both spruce forms showed good recovery capacity after a drought event. [Vedettes matières IGN] ForesterieRésumé : (auteur) Positive productivity-diversity relationships, pest-effect mitigation and increased resilience and stability maintain an ongoing interest for mixed stands in forestry. However, how mixing species affects forest regeneration is yet to be further explored.
We used data from the French National Forest Inventory (from 2006 to 2016) to model Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl regeneration cover in pure and mixed Quercus petraea stands; we included the effects of abiotic and biotic factors as well as mixture. We hypothesized that the characteristics of the companion species would prevent or facilitate the regeneration of oak.
Quercus petraea regeneration cover in this study responded negatively to total canopy cover and herbivory pressure. Mean July potential evapotranspiration (PET), mean December maximal temperature and soil pH are variables whose spatial variations over a given territory structure regeneration cover; all three of these variables have optimum values. Quercus petraea regeneration cover is linked to the proportion of Quercus petraea in the canopy layer in all mixed stands, except when the oak is mixed with shade-intolerant conifers: in this case, Quercus petraea regeneration is enhanced. The shade tolerance of admixed broadleaved species did not affect the Quercus petraea regeneration. This suggests that oak regeneration was facilitated with a shade-intolerant coniferous companion species due to better light transmittance through the crown or the competitive advantage of Quercus petraea over coniferous shade-intolerant species.
These results are of interest for oak mixtures since Quercus petraea regeneration cover benefits from mixtures with shade-intolerant conifers and is at least equal to that of pure stands.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Accurate and up-to-date data about growing stock volume are essential for forest management planning. Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) is known for producing accurate wall-to-wall predictions but the data are at present collected at long time intervals. Digital Photogrammetry (DP) is cheaper and often more frequently available but known to be less accurate. This study investigates the potential of using contemporary DP data together with older ALS data and compares this with the case when only old ALS data are trained with recent field data. Combining ALS data from 2010 to 2011 with DP data from 2015, both trained with National Forest Inventory (NFI) field plot data from 2015, improved predictions of growing stock volume. Validation using data from 100 stands inventoried in 2015 gave an RMSE of 24.3% utilizing both old ALS data and recent DP data, 26.0% for old ALS only and 24.9% for recent DP only. If information about management actions were assumed available, combining old ALS and recent DP gave RMSE of 23.0%, only ALS 23.3% and only DP 23.8%. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Advances in remote sensing technologies are generating new perspectives concerning the role of and methods used for National Forestry Inventories (NFIs). The increase in computation capabilities over the last several decades and the development of new statistical techniques have allowed for the automation of forest resource map generation through image analysis techniques and machine learning algorithms. The availability of large-scale data and the high temporal resolution that satellite platforms provide mean that it is possible to obtain updated information about forest resources at the stand level, thus increasing the quality of the spatial information. However, photointerpretation of satellite and aerial images is still the most common way that remote sensing information is used for NFIs or forest management purposes. This study describes a methodology that automatically maps the main forest covers in Galicia (Eucalyptus spp., conifers and broadleaves) using Worldview-2 and the random forest classifier. Furthermore, the method also evaluates the separate mapping of the three most abundant Pinus tree species in Galicia (Pinus pinaster, Pinus radiata and Pinus sylvestris). According to the results, Worldview-2 multispectral images allow for the efficient differentiation between the main forest classes that are present in Galicia with a very high degree of accuracy (91%) and ample spatial detail. Pinus species can also be efficiently differentiated (83%). [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (Auteur) We designed a novel method allowing to automatically detect and measure defects on the surface of trunks including branches, branch scars, and epicormics from terrestrial LiDAR data by using only high-density 3D information. We could automatically detect and measure the defects with a diameter as small as 0.5 cm on either oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl.) or beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) trees that display either rough or smooth bark.
Context : Ground-based light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology describes standing trees with a high level of detail. This provides an opportunity to assess standing tree quality and to use this information in forest inventory. Assuming the availability of a very high level of detail, we could extract information about the surface defects, mainly inherited from past ramification and having a strong impact on wood quality.
Aims : Within the general framework of the development of a computing method able to detect, identify, and quantify the defects on the trunk surface described from 3D data produced by a terrestrial LiDAR, this study focuses on the relevance of the whole process for two tree species with contrasted bark roughness (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. and Fagus sylvatica L.) in terms of detection, identification of the defects, and comparison with measurements performed manually on the bark surface.
Methods : First, a segmentation algorithm detected singularities on the trunk surface. Next, a Random Forests machine learning algorithm identified the most probable defect type and allowed the elimination of false detections. Finally, we estimated the position, horizontal, and vertical dimensions of each defect from 3D data, and we compared them to those observed directly on the trunk by an operator.
Results : The defects were detected and classified with a high accuracy with an average F1
score (harmonic mean of precision and recall) of 0.74. There were differences in computed and observed defect areas, but a much closer agreement for the number of defects.
Conclusion : The information about the defects present on the trunk surface measured from terrestrial LiDAR data can be used in an automated procedure for grading standing trees or roundwoods.Numéro de notice : A2021-326 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET/IMAGERIE Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-020-01022-3 Date de publication en ligne : 01/04/2021 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-020-01022-3 Format de la ressource électronique : URL Article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=97484
