[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) The expansion of French forests both in surface area and growing stock is explored based on National Forest Inventory data and Daubrée’s statistics (1908). The author studied their geographic variability under various ownership schemes (private, state or other regulated public forests) and depending on their composition (hardwood/softwood). Between 1908 and 2010, the increase in surface area was 5.1 million hectares (+ 50 %) with the fastest expansion rate in the Massif Central, and hardwoods gaining ground twice as fast as softwoods, although their overall proportions remained unchanged. Between 1975 and 2010, growing stock (+ 59 %, + 930 million cubic metres) developed three times more quickly than surface area but varied considerably between geographic locations: with area taking the lead in southern France and Brittany while in the Massif Central growing stock was preeminent, pointing to a certain continuity in relation to previous expansion of forest area. Over the same period, private forests and other regulated public forests experienced similar relative surface area variations (+ 20 %), but private forests accumulated twice as much growing stock (+ 80 %) as public forests. Between 1987 and 1994, private deciduous forests increased the most (+ 280 000 ha and + 105 million cubic metres), followed by private coniferous forests (+ 60 000 ha and + 63 million cubic metres). In the recent decade (2006-2015), increases in areas and stocks have continued at a pace of respectively 120 000 ha/year and 44 million cubic metres suggesting that this trend will continue over coming decades. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) The Chinese National Forest Inventory (NFI) has reported increased forest coverage in China since 2000, however, the new satellite-based dataset Global Forest Change (GFC) finds decreased forest coverage. In this study, four satellite datasets are used to investigate this discrepancy in forest cover change estimates in China between 2000 and 2013: forest cover change estimated from MODIS Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR), existing MODIS Land Cover (LC) and Vegetation Continuous Fields (VCF) products, and the Landsat-based GFC. Among these satellite datasets, forest loss shows much better agreement in terms of total change area and spatial pattern than do forest gain. The net changes in forest cover as a proportion of China’s land area varied widely from increases of 1.56% in NBR, 1.93% in VCF, and 3.40% in LC to a decline of −0.40% in GFC. The magnitude of net forest increase derived from MODIS datasets (1.56–3.40%) is lower than that reported in NFI (3.41%). Algorithm parameters, different spatial resolutions, and inconsistent forest definitions could be important sources of the discrepancies. Although several MODIS datasets support an overall forest increase in China, the direction and magnitude of net forest change is still unknown due to the large uncertainties in satellite-derived estimates. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Forests cover approximately 30.8% (16.8 million ha in 2013) of the total land area of the French metropolitan territory. They show a high diversity resulting from environmental factors such as climate and habitats, tree species, stand structure and economic factors such as physical and environmental constraints on forest accessibility, ownership categories and associated management objectives. As a result of both afforestation and natural colonization, the French forest area has more than doubled since 1788. Intensive and systematic forest monitoring via the National Forest inventory (NFI) has been carried out over the metropolitan territory since the late 1950s, enabling continuous analysis of forest features and wood resources. For several decades, French forests have experienced an increasing gap between total drain and increment, and growing stock has increased by about 25 million m3 per year over a 25-year period, with no indication of a future change in this structural trend. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Forest stands are a basic unit of analysis for forest inventory and mapping. Stands are defined as large forested areas of homogeneous tree species composition and age. Their accurate delineation is usually performed by human operators through visual analysis of very high resolution (VHR) infra-red and visible images. This task is tedious, highly time consuming, and needs to be automated for scalability and efficient updating purposes. The most appropriate fusion of two remote sensing modalities (lidar and multispectral images) is investigated here. The multispectral images give information about the tree species while 3D lidar point clouds provide geometric information. The fusion is operated at three different levels within a semantic segmentation workflow: over-segmentation, classification, and regularization. Results show that over-segmentation can be performed either on lidar or optical images without performance loss or gain, whereas fusion is mandatory for efficient semantic segmentation. Eventually, the fusion strategy dictates the composition and nature of the forest stands, assessing the high versatility of our approach.
