[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) This open access book deals with the methods and the results of the third Italian national forest inventory (INFC2015). Arma dei Carabinieri is entrusted with the realisation of the National Forest Inventory and with the decisions about the aims of the survey and data treatment. National forest inventories produce statistically based information on forests over country areas. Such information is used either at subnational or at supranational level in a great number of spheres and processes, included possibility to depict the status of the world forests. Italy conducted its first forest inventory in 1985 and in 2001 a permanent national forest inventory was launched to have periodically updated statistics. Due to the growing concern about the environment and especially the climate change, estimating forests carbon pools was a stated main objective and it was accordingly named Italian National Inventory of Forest and Forest Carbon Pools (INFC). The book begins with a description of the general organisation, the definitions, the methods and the estimation procedures. It proceeds showing the main estimates produced by INFC2015, in tables that are given in the book chapters. The estimates are presented through texts that introduce the subject matter, explain the way the related variables were surveyed and comment on the main outcomes with the help of graphics. The estimates presented include forest area, management and production, biodiversity and protection, forest health, protective and socio-economics functions. Role of forest in the carbon balance was analysed in a specific Chapter, as this is important for its role in the climate change mitigation. The book ends providing an understanding of the current dynamics of Italian forests by comparing the estimates obtained from INFC2005 and INFC2015, the last two national surveys. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Spatially balanced sampling is the most efficient design for surveying continuous or spatial populations across space. The spatial sampling of large-scale surveys is mostly based on grids, whose properties drive, and potentially limit, the possibilities of building flexible samples. Conciliating spatial balance and flexibility remains difficult. In particular, periodicity causes high constraints to the sampling particularly when an increase in the frequency of the information delivery is sought. Sampling stratification of adaptive sampling intensity also conflicts the grid-based approach. We show that square grids have geometric homothetic properties that enable to answer these needs by supporting nested hierarchical subgrid sets. These properties can be exploited to cope with both spatial flexibility in the sampling effort and spatio-temporal coordination of samples. Whereas some surveys seemingly do exploit these properties practically across the world, no formal development has been made available in the survey sampling literature across fields of applications. Here we therefore define and demonstrate these properties, and show how they can be used to produce nested hierarchical grids compatible with multiple periodicity values of interest to natural monitoring, and with adapting sampling intensity across space and time. We also provide an original extension of this framework, intended to tune the sampling effort gradually while preserving spatial systematicity. We use the French National Forest Inventory survey to illustrate these properties and their use in a large-scale repeated inventory. We show the flexibility and diversity of sampling schemes that can be initiated with square grids and the limits of their use. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Key message: The Fagacées growth model was originally designed for application in the Northern half of France. It is a robust model with potential applicability to a larger area, though this potential has not yet been verified. We added new data to the original parameterization data set and our results show that the Fagacées formalism can be generalized.
Context: The Fagacées growth and yield model was designed for the management of pure even-aged stands of European beech and served as a prototype to build models for other tree species.
Aims: The objective of this study was to improve the growth components of the Fagacées model with additional data from North-Western France to South-Western Germany.
Material and methods: Our model was calibrated on several forest inventory data sets. The first one (F) is the original data set that was used to elaborate the equations in the Fagacées model. The second one (F+) is the original data set extended with additional measurements on the same sites and on new sites in Northern France. The third (G) adds complementary data from a forest network in Southwestern Germany. The last one (A) is the aggregate of all these data sets.
Results: Fitting the original model equations on the extended F+ dataset led us to modify the equation for stand basal area increment. This new equation also fit the German dataset well. The other equations could be applied to all datasets, some with the same parameter values and some after recalibrating according to the dataset.
Conclusion: We conclude that the general form of the model’s equations is appropriate for application to other regions, but that a recalibration of the equations is preferable in order to reflect local conditions. The advantage of our approach is that fewer data are required to recalibrate an existing equation than to establish an entirely new one.Numéro de notice : A2021-695 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article nature-HAL : ArtAvecCL-RevueIntern DOI : 10.1007/s13595-021-01086-9 Date de publication en ligne : 20/09/2021 En ligne : https://doi.org/10.1007/s13595-021-01086-9 Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=98525
