[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Key message : We used lightweight terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) to detect over 3000 stems per hectare across a 12-ha permanent forest plot in French Guiana, 81% of them Context : Accurate position mapping of tropical rainforest trees is crucial for baseline studies of tropical forest ecology but is labor-intensive. Terrestrial lidar scanning (TLS) is broadly used in temperate forest inventories, but its use in rainforests is restricted to the determination of individual tree volumes within small survey areas.
Aims : Mapping tree stems across one large (12-ha) rainforest plot, including trees less than 10 cm DBH, and evaluating the precision of traditional mapping approaches.
Methods : We used lightweight TLS, co-registered the acquisitions, and developed a new efficient algorithm to process the TLS data.
Results : We detected 36,422 stems of which 29,665 (81%) were Conclusion : Lightweight TLS technology is a promising tool for the estimation of stem tapering and volume. Here, we show that it also facilitates the establishment of large tropical forest inventories, by improving the positioning of trees, thus increasing the accuracy of forest inventories and their cost-effectiveness.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) There is a well-documented opportunity and need to incorporate biodiversity conservation priorities into REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) initiatives. This requires thorough monitoring of changes to biodiversity at appropriate temporal and spatial scales. A national forest inventory is one of the essential tools used to monitor carbon stock changes but can also be expanded to include biodiversity indicators. Here we analyse the progress and potential of 70 countries in monitoring primarily non-tree biodiversity using national forest inventories. Progress on national forest inventories among countries participating in REDD+ is variable: 11 countries have not started; 26 have started but do not include non-tree biodiversity indicators; the remaining 33 countries do include non-tree biodiversity indicators but use various methodological approaches, levels of detail and taxonomic groups. Very few of these provide comprehensive and accessible manuals or results, highlighting a need for greater transparency. The capacity of countries to fund ongoing national forest inventories is a constraining factor. Remote sensing technologies can help reduce costs for countries with limited monitoring capacity but the need to understand biodiversity variation at finer scales often limits the utility of such methods. A pure stand of Fagus Orientalis located in the Hyrcanian forest of Iran was selected as the study area. The performance of a parametric approach, i.e., Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) model and non-parametric approaches, i.e., k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Random Forest (RF), and Support Vector Regression (SVR), were also evaluated for AGB estimations. Our results indicated that among S2 metrics, the FAPAR canopy biophysical index and NDVI index based on the red-edge band (NIR-b8a) have the highest correlation coefficient (r) of 0.420 and 0.417, respectively. The results of AGB estimation showed that a combination of S2 and S1 datasets using the k-NN algorithm had the best accuracy (R2 of 0.57 and rRMSE of 14.68%). The best rRMSE using L8, S2, and S1 datasets was 18.95, 16.99, and 19.17% using k-NN, k-NN, and MLR algorithms, respectively. The combination of L8 with S1 dataset also improved the rRMSE relative to L8 and S1 separately by 0.96 and 1.18%, respectively. We concluded that the combination of optical data (L8 or S2) with SAR data (S1) improves the broadleaved Hyrcanian AGB estimation. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) Information on carbon stocks and the rate of carbon accumulation is needed to harness the climate change mitigation potential of boreal forests. While previous studies have revealed general patterns and mechanisms for age-dependence of stand biomass, simple stand-level models that address the age-biomass relationship on average in managed boreal forests in different environmental conditions are largely missing. We developed models for the relationship between stand age and biomass by forest types on peatlands and mineral soils across climate zones in managed forests in Finland based on National Forest Inventory measurements from 1996 to 2018. In addition, we analyzed at which rate biomass accumulates when managed forest ages in different growth conditions. In northern Finland the maximum biomass change rate was one third, and the maximum biomass stock less than half of the corresponding values in sub-xeric heath forests on minerals soils in southern Finland. On drained peatlands the maximum biomass growth rate was approximately half, and on undrained peatlands one third of the maximum growth rate on mineral soils. On most fertile sites on mineral soils the maximum biomasses were three times larger than on the poorest sites. Correspondingly, the maximum biomass stock change rates were almost eight times faster on most fertile sites. In the example cases presented, the highest annual biomass change rates were achieved in young forests on average at the stand ages of 7–32 years, whereas the 95% of the maximum stock were reached on average in stands of 63–147 years. At the age of highest biomass growth rate stands contained 27–59% of the maximum biomass stocks. The developed models can be used in practical applications such as accounting of biogenic carbon in life-cycle assessments, mapping carbon, or creating simple predictions of biomass stock development in regions, or estimating the mitigation potential of afforestation and reforestation or estimating the magnitude of carbon offsets projects. [Vedettes matières IGN] Inventaire forestierRésumé : (auteur) The use of airborne laser scanning (LS) is increasing in forestry. Scanning can be conducted from manned aircrafts or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The scanning data are often used to calculate various attributes for small raster cells. These attributes can be used to segment the forest into homogeneous areas, called segments, micro-stands, or, like in this study, stands. Delineation of stands from raster data is equal to finding the most suitable stand number for each raster cell, which is a combinatorial optimization problem. This study tested the performance of the simulated annealing (SA) metaheuristic in the delineation of stands from grids of UAV-LS attributes. The objective function included three criteria: within-stand variation of the LS attributes, stand area, and stand shape. The purpose was to create delineations that consisted of homogeneous stands with a low number of small stands and a regular and roundish stand shape. The results showed that SA is capable of producing stand delineations that meet these criteria. However, the method tended to produce delineations where the stands often consisted of disconnected parts and the stand borders were jagged. These problems were mitigated by using a mode filter on the grid of stand numbers and giving unique numbers for all disconnected parts of a stand. Three LS attributes were used in the delineation. These attributes described the canopy height, the height of the bottom of the canopy and the variation of echo intensity within 1-m2 raster cells. Besides, a texture variable that described the spatial variation of canopy height in the proximity of a 1-m2 raster cell was found to be a useful variable. Stand delineations where the average stand area was about one hectare explained more than 80% of the variation in canopy height.
