[Termes IGN] structure d'un peuplement forestierRésumé : (auteur) Reliable assessment of forest structural types (FSTs) aids sustainable forest management. We developed a methodology for the identification of FSTs using airborne laser scanning (ALS), and demonstrate its generality by applying it to forests from Boreal, Mediterranean and Atlantic biogeographical regions. First, hierarchal clustering analysis (HCA) was applied and clusters (FSTs) were determined in coniferous and deciduous forests using four forest structural variables obtained from forest inventory data – quadratic mean diameter , Gini coefficient , basal area larger than mean and density of stems –. Then, classification and regression tree analysis (CART) were used to extract the empirical threshold values for discriminating those clusters. Based on the classification trees, and were the most important variables in the identification of FSTs. Lower, medium and high values of and characterize single storey FSTs, multi-layered FSTs and exponentially decreasing size distributions (reversed J), respectively. Within each of these main FST groups, we also identified young/mature and sparse/dense subtypes using and . Then we used similar structural predictors derived from ALS – maximum height (), L-coefficient of variation (), L-skewness (), and percentage of penetration (), – and a nearest neighbour method to predict the FSTs. We obtained a greater overall accuracy in deciduous forest (0.87) as compared to the coniferous forest (0.72). Our methodology proves the usefulness of ALS data for structural heterogeneity assessment of forests across biogeographical regions. Our simple two-tier approach to FST classification paves the way toward transnational assessments of forest structure across bioregions. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Linking individual-tree and stand-level growth models is required for estimating future forest stand structure, while maintaining the desired accuracy for forest management decision making. There is a scarcity of studies addressing this issue for clonal Eucalypt stands in Brazil. Thus, this paper aims to develop a compatible individual-tree and stand-level growth and yield system for clonal Eucalypt stands in Brazil. The dataset used in this study is derived from remeasurement information of sixteen TECHS sites. At every site, eleven Eucalypt clones were planted in single block plots, while extra plots under a rainfall exclusion regime were also installed in fourteen sites. Prediction and projection diameter percentile equations were developed, as well as an individual-tree mortality equation and a generalized height-diameter equation. In addition, a detailed explanation of the structural architecture of the developed compatible growth and yield system is provided. Differences when forecasting forest afforestation and updating forest inventories were highlighted in order to provide the proper use of the developed growth and yield system. Finally, the individual-tree equations were validated through the use of the rainfall exclusion regime plots as was the growth and yield system when applied for prediction and projection purposes. The individual-tree level equations provided accurate estimates. The newly developed compatible growth and yield system also displayed unbiased and accurate estimates. The system achieved full compatibility between individual-tree and stand-level estimates and produced accurate stand table estimates. The growth and yield system presented is a powerful analytical tool that can serve to update inventory data in tropical Brazil and also to provide estimates for expected forest afforestation. The system has the capability of providing detailed outputs, which allows forest managers to consider merchandizing the clonal Eucalypt stands into multiple products. [Termes IGN] structure d'un peuplement forestierRésumé : (auteur) The composition, structure and function of forest ecosystems are the key features characterizing their ecological properties, and can thus be crucially shaped and changed by various biotic and abiotic factors on multiple spatial scales. The magnitude and extent of these changes in recent decades calls for enhanced mitigation and adaption measures. Remote sensing data and methods are the main complementary sources of up-to-date synoptic and objective information of forest ecology. Due to the inherent 3D nature of forest ecosystems, the analysis of 3D sources of remote sensing data is considered to be most appropriate for recreating the forest's compositional, structural and functional dynamics. In this Special Issue of Forests, we published a set of state-of-the-art scientific works including experimental studies, methodological developments and model validations, all dealing with the general topic of 3D remote sensing-assisted applications in forest ecology. We showed applications in forest ecology from a broad collection of method and sensor combinations, including fusion schemes. All in all, the studies and their focuses are as broad as a forest's ecology or the field of remote sensing and, thus, reflect the very diverse usages and directions toward which future research and practice will be directed. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Biomass ratio is a state variable allowing the conversion of the forest growing stock into biomass (Kauppi et al., 2006). This variable is most often considered constant per tree species despite the huge range of intraspecific variability of basic density. Indeed, the factors that influence wood density are numerous: tree growth and age, competition (e.g. forest structure), genetics as well as intra and inter annual climatic variations. In light of such diversity, scientific research into forest biomass characteristics is required to better incorporate the heterogeneity of forests in the forest carbon accounting methods (Bowen et al., 2011).
Materials and methods: In 2016 and 2017 over fifty five thousands increment cores were collected in the field by the French NFI. Wood density measurements were performed at INRA (Leban et al., 2019, this conference) and combined with the French NFI calculation system, biomass ratio can now be computed as a standard. This quantity can now be depicted over stratification variables such as soil water availability. An exploratory and ANOVA-assisted analysis of this gradient was performed.
Results: Biomass ratio was found strongly related to soil water availability, with a decrease of biomass ratio at the hardwood and softwood scale, but no correlation were found at the specie level. Explanations come from the species repartition along the gradients from high wood density to low density driven by soil water availability.
Conclusion: Wood density data acquired on the French NFI allow major steps forward toward the proper estimate of forest biomass resources and of carbon sequestration. Biomass ratio was found correlated with climatic contexts, suggesting that biomass sequestration at constant volume may increase in a warmer climate. But this change will be made through change of composition of the forest rather than an adaptation of the species.

[Vedettes matières IGN] Economie forestièreIndex. décimale : THESE Thèses et HDR Résumé : (auteur) Contexte.
Conclusion. Numéro de notice : 17591 Affiliation des auteurs : LIF (2012-2019) Thématique : FORET/MATHEMATIQUE Nature : Thèse française Note de thèse : Thèse : Biologie et écologie des forêts et agrosystèmes : Lorraine : 2019 nature-HAL : Thèse DOI : sans En ligne : https://hal.science/tel-02130405v1 Format de la ressource électronique : URL Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=93334 A growth-model-driven technique for tree stem diameter estimation by using airborne LiDAR data / Claudia Paris in IEEE Transactions on geoscience and remote sensing, vol 57 n° 1 (January 2019)PermalinkPermalinkAssessing the structural differences between tropical forest types using Terrestrial Laser Scanning / Mathieu Decuyper in Forest ecology and management, vol 429 (1 December 2018)PermalinkCan forest structural diversity be a response to anthropogenic stress?
