[Termes IGN] structure de la végétationRésumé : (auteur) This review summarizes early stand-scale studies of pristine forest structures, disturbance regimes and successional patterns carried out in boreal Eurasia. We attempt to reveal, characterize and classify stand dynamic types that can be used as templates for nature-based forest management. The studies reviewed demonstrate multiple successional pathways in stand development in all types of pristine forests. All-aged stands driven by small-scale disturbances are formed over successional development of several hundreds of years. This endogenous development can be interrupted by stand-replacing or partial disturbances leading to successions with even-aged or cohort-structured stands, respectively. In Western Europe, the most common disturbances are windthrows, surface fires and fluctuations in moisture regime; in Eastern Europe and Siberia, the most common disturbances are crown and surface fires and insect outbreaks. Type, return interval and severity of disturbances are strongly influenced by the site conditions and successional stage of a stand. Based on characteristics of forest stands and disturbance regime, four main types of pristine boreal forest stand dynamics can be distinguished: (1) even-aged, compositional change dynamics, (2) even-aged, mono-dominant dynamics, (3) cohort dynamics and (4) fine-scale gap dynamics. These types can be mimicked in developing scenarios of ecological sustainable forest management in Eurasian boreal forests. Note de contenu : Bibliogr. Résumés en anglais et français. [Termes IGN] troncRésumé : (auteur) Five temperate broad-leaved tree species were compared with respect to their water consumption strategies under ample and restricted water supply. We measured synchronously leaf conductance $(g_{\rm L})$ in the sun canopy, xylem sap flux $(J_{\rm s})$ and leaf water potential (predawn, $\Psi _{\rm pd}$ and noon, $\Psi _{\rm noon}$) in adult trees in a mixed stand and related them to the fluctuations in vapor pressure deficit (D) and soil moisture. • Maximum $g_{\rm L}$ was particularly high in F. excelsior, C. betulus and T. cordata and revealed a higher D sensitivity. $\Psi _{\rm pd}$ remained constantly high in A. pseudoplatanus, C. betulus and F. excelsior, but decreased in T. cordata and F. sylvatica with decreasing soil moisture. • $J_{\rm sd}$ decreased linearly with decreasing soil matrix potential in all species except for F. excelsior. Apparent hydraulic conductance in the soil-to-leaf flow path $(L_{\rm c})$ was higher in A. pseudoplatanus than in the other species. • F. sylvatica maintained a low maximum $g_{\rm L}$ and reduced $J_{\rm sd}$ markedly upon drought, but faced severe decreases in $\Psi _{\rm pd}$ and $\Psi _{\rm noon}$. F. excelsior represents an opposite strategy with high maximum $g_{\rm L}$ and stable $\Psi _{\rm pd}$. • The species drought sensitivity increases in the sequence F. excelsior Numéro de notice : A2009-723 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : FORET Nature : Article DOI : 10.1051/forest/2008076 Date de publication en ligne : 31/01/2009 En ligne : https://www.afs-journal.org/articles/forest/abs/2009/01/f08128/f08128.html Format de la ressource électronique : url article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=71759

[Vedettes matières IGN] SylvicultureRésumé : (auteur) The density and identity of tree neighbourhood is a key factor to explain tree mortality in forests, especially during the stem exclusion phase. $\bullet$ To understand this process, we built a logistic model for mortality in a spatially explicit context, including tree and neighbourhood predictors. Additionally, we used this model to build mortality risk frequency distributions. Finally, we tested this model against a random mortality model to predict the spatial pattern of the forest. $\bullet$ Annual mortality rate was high for pedunculate oak (Quercus robur, 6.99%), moderate for birch (Betula celtiberica, 2.19%) and Pyrenean oak (Q. pyrenaica, 1.58%) and low for beech (Fagus sylvatica, 0.26%). Mortality risk models for pedunculate oak and birch included stem diameter, tree height, canopy position and neighbourhood. Mortality was affected by the specific nature of the neighbourhood showing a clear competitive hierarchy: beech > pedunculate oak > birch. Models based on random mortality and logistic regression model were able to predict the spatial pattern of survivors although logistic regression predictions were more accurate. $\bullet$ Our study highlights how simple models such as the random mortality one may obscure much more complex spatial interactions. [Vedettes matières IGN] BotaniqueRésumé : (Auteur) "Proposed modification of group selection system is aimed to successfully combine its elements with biological peculiarities (such as sympodial growth, distinct heliotropism and crown growth plasticity, heavy seeds and difficult dissemination, etc.) of shade-intolerant and mid-tolerant tree species, stands of which may be managed under the same system. Principles, on which the modification is based, are: (i) application of well founded extended rotations in order to increase the proportion of tree groups above 90-100 years age in the stand, where upon the height increment and crown side spread by most of the main tree species in Bulgary drop to considerably lower level, and (ii) optimum systematic spatial positioning of openings in the stand canopy (and tree groups respectively) over the stand area, so that new gaps created by consecutive selection cuttings adjoin to a minimum number of middle aged (40-80 y. age) tree groups. Such clumps of vigorous trees with high growth rates, heliotropism and plasticity carry certain risks of spoiling the target regular-unevenaged stand structure. Factors of significance are discussed by determining the rotation age, size of gaps opened in the stand canopy, selection cutting cycle, a regularuneven- aged stand structure design and the minimum area that enables realisation of full selection system cycle. Definitions and determination of selection system elements in their mutual connections are presented in consecutive steps when designing a particular application of group selection system for exemplary pure stand of common beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). By the proposed group selection system modification the amount of combinations of various factors having impact upon processes in the tree groups are diminished compared to that by random spatial arrangement of the gaps over the stand area. Silvicultural activities aimed to maintain a stable unevenaged stand structures are thus getting more predictable, easier to schedule and efficient."
