[Termes IGN] surveillance forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are platforms that have been increasingly used over the last decade to collect data for forest insect pest and disease (FIPD) monitoring. These machines provide flexibility, cost efficiency, and a high temporal and spatial resolution of remotely sensed data. The purpose of this review is to summarize recent contributions and to identify knowledge gaps in UAV remote sensing for FIPD monitoring. A systematic review was performed using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) protocol. We reviewed the full text of 49 studies published between 2015 and 2021. The parameters examined were the taxonomic characteristics, the type of UAV and sensor, data collection and pre-processing, processing and analytical methods, and software used. We found that the number of papers on this topic has increased in recent years, with most being studies located in China and Europe. The main FIPDs studied were pine wilt disease (PWD) and bark beetles (BB) using UAV multirotor architectures. Among the sensor types, multispectral and red–green–blue (RGB) bands were preferred for the monitoring tasks. Regarding the analytical methods, random forest (RF) and deep learning (DL) classifiers were the most frequently applied in UAV imagery processing. This paper discusses the advantages and limitations associated with the use of UAVs and the processing methods for FIPDs, and research gaps and challenges are presented. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Spatial global sensitivity analysis (SGSA) reveals and ranks the input–output relation in spatial models. The SGSA output is twofold: (1) first-order effects which are the linear relations of every input layer with the output; and (2) high-order effects where the nonlinear interaction among input layers is depicted. The resulting sensitivity maps are twice the number of input layers which is challenging to visualize, considering the limitations of the human cognitive system or visual representations. Finding similar patterns and projecting that similarity into a 2D surface will help to tackle this voluminous visual load. This article presents the implementation of self-organizing maps (SOM), a type of artificial neural network, as a dimension reduction approach for SGSA visualization. SOM is also used for feature selection to identify the most relevant feature for model uncertainty. The winning neurons at SOM are projected as the influence map and the results are compared with conventional visualization techniques. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) After considering state-of-the-art algorithms, this paper presents a novel method for generating true orthophotos from unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images of urban areas. The procedure consists of four steps: 2D edge detection in building regions, 3D edge graph generation, digital surface model (DSM) modification and, finally, true orthophoto and orthomosaic generation. The main contribution of this paper is concerned with the first two steps, in which deep-learning approaches are used to identify the structural edges of the buildings and the estimated 3D edge points are added to the point cloud for DSM modification. Running the proposed method as well as four state-of-the-art methods on two different datasets demonstrates that the proposed method outperforms the existing orthophoto improvement methods by up to 50% in the first dataset and by 70% in the second dataset by reducing true orthophoto distortion in the structured edges of the buildings. [Termes IGN] réseau neuronal artificielRésumé : (auteur) Roads found in informal settlements arise out of convenience, and are often not recorded or maintained by authorities. This complicates service delivery, sustainable development and crisis mitigation, including management and tracking of COVID-19. We, therefore, aim to extract informal roads in remote sensing images. Existing techniques aiming at the extraction of formal roads are not suitable for the problem due to the complex physical and spectral properties of informal roads. The only existing approaches for informal roads, namely (Nobrega et al., 2006, Thiede et al., 2020), do not consider neural networks as a solution. Neural networks show promise in overcoming these complexities. However, they require a large amount of data to learn, which is currently not available due to the expensive and time-consuming nature of collecting such data. This paper implements a neural network to extract informal roads from a data set digitised by this research group. Data quality is assessed by calculating validity completeness, homogeneity and the V-measure, a measure of consistency, in order to evaluate the overall usability of the dataset for neural network informal road detection. We implement the GANs-UNet model that obtained the highest F1-score in a 2020 review paper (Abdollahi et al., 2020) on the state-of-the-art deep learning models used to extract formal roads. The results indicate that the model is able to extract informal roads successfully in the presence of appropriate training data. [Termes IGN] semis de pointsRésumé : (auteur) In the geomatics domain the use of deep learning, a subset of machine learning, is becoming more and more widespread. In this context, the 3D semantic segmentation of heritage point clouds presents an interesting and promising approach for modelling automation, in light of the heterogeneous nature of historical building styles and features. However, this heterogeneity also presents an obstacle in terms of generating the training data for use in deep learning, hitherto performed largely manually. The current generally low availability of labelled data also presents a motivation to aid the process of training data generation. In this paper, we propose the use of approaches based on geometric rules to automate to a certain degree this task. One object class will be discussed in this paper, namely the pillars class. Results show that the approach managed to extract pillars with satisfactory quality (98.5% of correctly detected pillars with the proposed algorithm). Tests were also performed to use the outputs in a deep learning segmentation setting, with a favourable outcome in terms of reducing the overall labelling time (−66.5%). Certain particularities were nevertheless observed, which also influence the result of the deep learning segmentation.
