[Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Individual tree segmentation is essential for many applications in city management and urban ecology. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) system acquires accurate point clouds in a fast and environmentally-friendly manner, which enables single tree detection. However, the large number of object categories and occlusion from nearby objects in complex environment pose great challenges in urban tree inventory, resulting in omission or commission errors. Therefore, this paper addresses these challenges and increases the accuracy of individual tree segmentation by proposing an automated method for instance recognition urban roadside trees. The proposed algorithm was implemented of unmanned aerial vehicles laser scanning (UAV-LS) data. First, an improved filtering algorithm was developed to identify ground and non-ground points. Second, we extracted tree-like objects via labeling on non-ground points using a deep learning model with a few smaller modifications. Unlike only concentrating on the global features in previous method, the proposed method revises a pointwise semantic learning network to capture both the global and local information at multiple scales, significantly avoiding the information loss in local neighborhoods and reducing useless convolutional computations. Afterwards, the semantic representation is fed into a graph-structured optimization model, which obtains globally optimal classification results by constructing a weighted indirect graph and solving the optimization problem with graph-cuts. The segmented tree points were extracted and consolidated through a series of operations, and they were finally recognized by combining graph embedding learning with a structure-aware loss function and a supervoxel-based normalized cut segmentation method. Experimental results on two public datasets demonstrated that our framework achieved better performance in terms of classification accuracy and recognition ratio of tree. [Termes IGN] reconnaissance automatiqueRésumé : (auteur) The low resolution of infrared (IR) images makes feature extraction for classification of a challenging work. Learning-based methods, therefore, are preferred to be used on such raw imagery. In this article, in order to avoid difficulties in feature extraction, a novel multitask extension of the widely used sparse-representation-classification (SRC) method is proposed in both single and multiview set-ups. That is, the test sample could be a single IR image or images from different views. In both single-view and multiview scenarios, we try to employ collaborative spike and slab priors. This is because the traditional sparsity-inducing measures such as the l0 -row pseudonorm makes it hard to capture the sparse structure of the coefficient matrix when expanded in terms of a training dictionary, and the priors are proved to be able to capture fairly general sparse structures. Furthermore, a joint prior and sparse coefficient estimation method (JPCEM) is proposed for the first time in this article in order to alleviate the need to handpick prior parameters required before classification. Multiple experiments are conducted on a synthetic Comanche Forward Looking IR (FLIR) Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) database collected by Army Research Lab and a challenging mid-wave IR (MWIR) image ATR database made available by the U.S. Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate. The final results substantiate the merits of the proposed JPCEM through comparisons with other state-of-the-art methods, including both the ones based on SRC and the ones constructed using deep learning frameworks. [Termes IGN] variation saisonnièreRésumé : (auteur) Determining tree species composition in natural forests is essential for effective forest management. Species classification at the individual tree level requires fine-scale traits which can be derived through terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) point clouds. A generalizable species classification framework also needs to decouple seasonal foliage variation from deciduous species, for which wood filtering is applicable. Different machine learning and deep learning models are feasible for wood filtering and species classification. We investigated 13 machine learning and deep learning classifiers for 9 species, and 15 classifiers for filtering wood points from TLS plot scans. Each classifier was evaluated using the criteria of mean Intersection over Union accuracy (mIoU), training stability and time cost. On average, deep learning classifiers outperformed machine learning classifiers by 10% and 5% in terms of wood and species classification mIoU, respectively. PointNet++ provided the best species classifier, with the highest mIoU (0.906), stability, and moderate time cost. Among wood classifiers, UNet achieved the top mIoU (0.839) while ResNet-50 was recommended for rapid trial and error testing. Across the classifications, the factors of input resolution, attributes and features were also analyzed. Hot zones of species classification with PointNet++ were visualized to indicate how AI interpret species traits. [Termes IGN] zone militaireRésumé : (Auteur) Automatic image exploitation is a critical technology for quick content analysis of high-resolution remote sensing images. The presence of a heliport on an image usually implies an important facility, such as military facilities. Therefore, detection of heliports can reveal critical information about the content of an image. In this article, two learning-based algorithms are presented that make use of artificial neural networks to detect H-shaped, light-colored heliports. The first algorithm is based on shape analysis of the heliport candidate segments using classical artificial neural networks. The second algorithm uses deep-learning techniques. While deep learning can solve difficult problems successfully, classical-learning approaches can be tuned easily to obtain fast and reasonable results. Therefore, although the main objective of this article is heliport detection, it also compares a deep-learning based approach with a classical learning-based approach and discusses advantages and disadvantages of both techniques. [Termes IGN] zone d'intérêtRésumé : (auteur) The visual similarity of oil slick and other elements, known as look-alike, affects the reliability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images for marine oil spill detection. So far, detection and discrimination of oil spill and look-alike are still limited to the use of traditional machine learning algorithms and semantic segmentation deep learning models with limited accuracy. Thus, this study developed a novel deep learning oil spill detection model using computer vision instance segmentation Mask-Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (Mask R-CNN) model. The model training was conducted using transfer learning on the ResNet 101 on COCO as backbone in combination with Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) architecture for feature extraction at 30 epochs with 0.001 learning rate. Testing of the model was conducted using the least training and validation loss value on the withheld testing images. The model’s performance was evaluated using precision, recall, specificity, IoU, F1-measure and overall accuracy values. Ship detection and segmentation had the highest performance with overall accuracy of 98.3%. The model equally showed a higher accuracy for oil spill and look-alike detection and segmentation although oil spill detection outperformed look-alike with overall accuracy values of 96.6% and 91.0% respectively. The study concluded that the deep learning instance segmentation model performs better than conventional machine learning models and deep learning semantic segmentation models in detection and segmentation.
