[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Mangrove ecosystems are faced with far more existential threats of erosion than their terrestrial counterparts. Consequences of their degradation vary from decline in edible aquatic stocks, coastal erosion and aquatic weeds invasion. Mangrove forest dynamics was assessed from multi-temporal analyses of remotely sensed satellite images (mosaics of 1989/90 and 2014/15) within 233,900 hectares. Ground-truthing was accompanied by field measurements in selected forest stands to characterize structure, estimate biomass and carbon pools. With conservation as overriding goal, a socio-economic survey was conducted to underpin the factors influencing mangrove forests over-exploitation and qualitatively assess the sensitivity of the locals to resources decline. The region recorded fifty percent loss of mangrove area during the 25-year period. Low leaf area index (1.02 - 2.52 m2·m-2) confirms canopy openness. Above-ground root biomass (kg per root) ranged between 110.67 and 382.64. The roots demonstrate capacity to fix up to 176 Mg C ha-1 with average carbon content of 46 percent. Highest carbon pools were in the Eloka-To forest stands, in near natural conditions. Despite harsh environmental conditions, potential for natural regeneration was evidenced by seedlings density (individuals per m2) up to 76. Pilot survey revealed high dependence on mangrove resources for direct income (70 percent) and daily energy needs (60 percent). Despite the heightened awareness of the impending dangers posed by mangrove deforestation and willingness to conserve, riverine communities are incapacitated by lack of viable economic alternatives. External interventions are therefore imperative to achieve conservation goals with long-term implications for climate change adaptation and mitigation. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) In the context of climatic change an increasing attention is paid to the ability of forests to store more carbon as increasing carbon sequestration by forests is equivalent to reducing emissions the release of carbon to the atmosphere. Estimating the quantity of carbon sequestered in the forests is usually based upon the National Forest Inventory statistical measurements. These measurements are converted in estimates of the annual forest increments that in turn are converted in annual biomass increments by the means of models and of average basic density values depending of the availability of wood density data bases. The wood density is very variable among species and is dependant of the annual rings anatomical structure (ring porous, semi-ring porous, diffuse porous, non-porous) and of the growth conditions of the trees (genetic origin, stand age and structure, management, and climate). These different sources of variability of the wood density are not yet taken into account for forests carbon accounting. The objective of this project is to measure the wood density variations on all the thirty thousand trees measured during one year by the technicians of the French National Forest Inventory. A new low cost method was developed for the processing of all the collected increment cores. The increments cores are stored in alveolar polycarbonate plates, dried and scanned with one medical Xray scanner. For each increment core the width of the last five rings was measured on the field and the corresponding wood density obtained by the scanner and a new informatics program. This method is tested for the first time in France and it will provide a new xylotheque and an original wood density data set for all the French tree species measured by the National Forest Inventory. We will present preliminary results for the new measurement proxy of the annual forest biomass increments, illustrate the perspective to analyze the biomass increments in relation with the forests stand structure and with the geographical climatic conditions and discuss the interest to measure on the same samples other wood properties than wood density. [Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) Climate change projections for Europe suggest increases in temperature, changes in precipitation regimes as well as more frequent and severe weather extremes like heat waves, droughts and storms. As these changes may have a large impact on forest ecosystems, forest management should adapt to maintain vital and productive forests in the future. This review assesses how close-to-nature silviculture (CNS), which is a widespread silvicultural approach in Central Europe, may cope with projected changes in climate. First, a conceptual model of forest vulnerability is outlined, and used to describe climate change exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity of forests. Strategies and options for adaptation, and their compliance with the principles of CNS are then discussed. Modifications in CNS, such as using exotic tree species and provenances or the assisted migration of well adapted tree species from other climates can enhance adaptive capacity of forests. Moreover, the regeneration of stress-tolerant pioneer species can be supported by applying the whole range of silvicultural systems.
